Wayne Carini - what happened?

I used to really enjoy watching his series Chasing Classic Cars. I don't know the facts, but I wonder about his ethics. Someone here mentioned his flaky business dealings, but I came across this video and it sure looks like he didn't treat Roger Barr well, among some other things. Just curious what those here that are better informed have to say.

His FB page has this. I do remember the Cripps go fund me going around in 2018/9. I also remember commentary that it was a workers comp thing so Carini couldn’t help without exposing himself. The commentary below is … less flattering.

——-

I would like to correct something out there on the internet. There is a video out there that supposedly has facts about me. While I am still handsome and breathing , I would like my fans to know two facts # 1 I have not retired. I kept asking to come back to work and was told no work, then, in the mail I received a notice that I was involuntarily terminated. Yep, not even over the phone or in person..just let go. I found another job which I am really enjoying at The Paddock Classic Car Restorations in New Britain CT. This leads me to my # 2 . It would seem that someone we won't mention put out the second big lie. I am not worth 1.3 million. Fact is I have to work to keep a roof over my head and food on the table. I was not paid anything to appear on camera. If I was worth that much I would be fixing the 2 teeth that have broken and all the house repairs that are needed. The go fund me page started by super fan Steve Cripps was a life saver, home saver and something wonderful. Thanks for your time to read this.

This is entertaining too

I sent old Roger some dough via that little campaign. He always seemed to be a cool and funny guy.

I always wondered what happened to Roger. He just vanished from the show with no mention of why. I had no idea about the rest of the store with Wayne. I will have to watch the full video.

As many of the comments suggested, that video was pretty much just click bait.

What surprised me though were all the negative comments about Wayne from people who've only seen him on TV, but otherwise never had any dealings or interaction with him. People calling him a jerk, or saying that he's arrogant, or a "cheap snob", or saying that he's full of schit, a "little prima donna", or that he's a crook, and that he wasn't really a "car guy", just a used car salesman or a "cheesy car flipper". One guy claims that he was ripping off grieving widows with low-ball offers to buy their late husband's classic cars, then turning around and selling them for huge profits. Pretty harsh stuff...

I wonder if I was watching the same Chasing Classic Cars that they were? I never got any of those impressions about Wayne from that show. As a matter of fact, his was one of the few shows that focused primarily on the cars rather than all the childish BS going on among the clowns out in the shop.

I've never had any one-on-one interaction with Wayne Carini, but in addition to watching his show for years, I've also attended a few classic car forums that he moderated and always felt that he truly is a "car guy" who's quite knowledgeable about many facets of the classic car world and who's definitely passionate about what he's doing.

That video is best listened to blindfolded because literally not one second of it corresponds to whatever the narrator is taking about at the time. What a pile of wtf.

That was one of the few car shows I could never get into. Liked the mechanic who actually did everything, but he was never really on the show much

Yeah, I watched that video and wondered where the upside down Chevy drag car on fire went. So, certainly click bait. I think they're exaggerating a workplace accident Roger had which resulted in an infection (lungs or leg according to various sources) that required hospitalization. It looks like it became a Worker's Comp issue that went against Roger. And then Roger got fired by email, which seems cold. It's been stated that Roger only got paid as a mechanic on the show, and not one of the stars, which seems unfair. Then there was a lawsuit of unknown merit against Wayne regarding a Pierce Arrow, then Covid.

Up until the time where Roger was injured, that video was pretty complimentary of Wayne. It appeared to assume poorly of him with regard to Roger's departure. Whether it's true or not, I don't know, but it doesn't look good.

How could Roger not be paid for his onscreen appearances? Isn't there a union rule about that or something to that effect? I remember Jay Leno or Johnny Carson always making cracks about that when a cameraman or producer had to step into view or onto the stage for a few seconds while shooting.

Those shows are produced under IATSE (Int'l Assoc Theater Stage Employees) contracts. Leno and Carson were trying to be funny. Now if you're "Gene, Gene The Dancing Machine" or Doc Severinsen you probably get a "bump" in pay for being a featured performer.

Most of those reality shows are independently produced, no SAG for the "performers" and no ASC contracts with the camera crew. Not even sure if they get residuals when they are sold and aired in other markets.

I read where reality shows participants are not union "actors" and don't get paid. They also have a very strict non-disclosure agreement.

Gene was actually a prop man over at NBC. I worked with him a few times.

The non-disclosures are a big deal. No reveal of plots and sub plots (yes, they aren't all THAT real).

The people who participate on shows like Mountain Men, Deadliest Catch and others aren't paid hourly, they're paid per show. Most seasons are 10 shows so if they get $1,200 (probably more) per show it's a nice stipend to get you through the lean times.

They are paid to generally just let a camera guy set up GoPro's and hang out with them and film for a few weeks.

I agree with Tobra I could never get into the show even though it featured some great barn finds

Something about Wayne Carini never really clicked with me and even more disappointed that he did not look out for his "supposed" close friend...greed?

Well, I was informed/"warned" about Wayne long ago, I'll leave it at that.
When it comes to the business end of our hobby, it is very nasty.

I've only see his show once, he stole, I mean bought, (and it was years so so I'm sorta making this next part up, but maybe not) a pristine XKE roadster from a widow for $5000. Something close to that in terms of condition and price anyway. I was actually mad after watching the show.

I don't remember the show mentioning his buy prices often, if at all. I just remember the auction final prices when it went that way.
