What is a Mcintosh?
AND NO it isn't an Apple.
I'm wondering how many of you know what it really is? It's bin around since 1949, and I have been aware of it since the 60's. Have owned it since the late 70's, when I could first afford it. Well anyway here it is... www.mcintoshlabs.com |

Good stuff, and the older the better, (to a point). Their tube amps set a sound standard that has not been exceeded by subsequent technology, IMO.

Old school Mcintosh and Marantz stuff is the best there is. All about the tubes.

There are certain used Mc models that sell for more now than they did when they were originally sold. They require just the right speakers, IMHO (like many tubes).

So tabs...tell us which Mc Labs model you have. The power amps are highly sought after by collectors of vintage audio equipment.
Got Tubes?

Yeah, youre right, needs tubes....
here are my amplifiers Old School Marantz 2 all tube (Not for sale BTW) 1966 Fender Deluxe Reverb Silverface, all tube Custom homebuilt clone of Marshall Super Lead, all tube Various little homebuilt pre-amps, all tube Nothing can get the warmth and depth of a good tube amplifier IMHO. However some of the new guitar emulators are getting pretty good at it. |

I own:
MR78...Tuner C27....Pre Amp MC2125...Amp ...125W per channel JBL L65 speakers Sorry no Tubes, that was a little before my time. I have enjoyed my equipment since 1978. Checking the prices on E-bay for my pieces, they are worth about what I paid for them all those years ago. Amazing, say that about any other home entertainemnt equipment? My JBL speakers have had the Woofers rebuilt a couple of times by JBL to. As far as leaving you here to yourselves on these threads. One I allready spend way too much time on line, and really need a life. Two I sometimes think my presence hinders things from developing.

Ahh, the Mcintosh....(4) KT88 output tubes per channel in a push-pull parallell configuration; 12AX7 preamps, and 20 pount output transformers....Sweet....
According to the "experts", the crossover point (top/bottom of the sine wave) with tubes is seamless, but with solid states there is a small but definable "break", and that is what, to an audiophile, makes the vacuum tube amplifier superior. I suppose you could say that "newer ain't necessarily better".

When I expose folks to 'tube sound', after their years of listening to silicon, they are usually amazed. And want to stay in the listening room for hours.

And quite the reproduction market for the Mc Amps.

Mac amps are good, but they also had some really horrible solid-state amps that still used output transformer in their loop. Don't ask me why...
One day, i'm going to find enough time to make the definitive amp for myself (i have built quite many transistor and tube amps in younger days): Dual mono tube OTL amp with lots of Sovtek triodes.
