It's hard to comprehend, but gusts have reached 100 MPH. In Eaton Canyon, the wind pushed a firestorm through into Altadena and into Pasadena in hours. This area has had barely over 1 10th of an inch of rain in the last 8 months, and high winds quickly remove moisture from vegetation. High winds again tonight, and then it eases off, which will make it possible for water and retardant-dropping aircraft to get into the air. A new fire just popped up in the Hollywood Hills within the last hour near Nichols Canyon where my first LA house was...

The 100mph figure,
Is that the natural Santa Anna wind or is that the result of the storm generated by fires?

Most gusts have been topping at 50-80 below the ridgetops. But you're right, a firestorm can accelerate winds...

Altadena is not so-called high buck, though it is nice. La Canada just a canyon west is. Pasadena next area south is.
Pacific Palisades is like many so-called high buck LA neighborhoods, has plenty of regular Joes who’ve lived there a long time. Urban wildfire is the biggest terror of the West, and it’s happening.

The Lookout - great source and mapping The link above is his live hour tonight - updates on Palisades, Altadena, Sunset, Sylmar; talks about how urban fires are different from wildland fires; how engineers lay out neighbors like fire would; how Santa Ana fires are fought or not; overlays 100 year fire history on map; other really interesting stuff. The impression I’m getting is Malibu is pretty safe, Santa Monica is ?, Topanga in trouble, fire likely to keep spreading south from Altadena, ? on Sunset fire.

On a positive note (if anything positive about this) is that homeowners insurance covers fires (not flood damage like with Helene). Homeowners that lose their house and survive will be able to rebuild...somewhere.

Here's a link to California fires. https://www.fire.ca.gov/incidents
I've worked half a dozen or so fires in our County's Emergency Operations Center. Things can change so fast you never know what's next. I ended one shift at the EOC, went home to rest and shortly after I had left, the EOC had to be evacuated because of changes in the fire. I had to come back in to help setup the new EOC in a new location. |

My heart goes out to all of those affected by this. My God, this is absolutely one of those "once in a lifetime" tragedies that just rocks our world. I cannot imagine what it must be like to have something like this bearing down on you, with the decisions you must make with no time to make them. I've led a very sheltered life, I realize, when viewing something like this from afar. Guys like me, with families like mine, with homes like mine, with neighbors like mine, with dreams like mine. Everything gone except, hopefully, the people. But even then, even loved ones, will be gone for some. This is just beyond my imagination, beyond my ability to even comprehend. My prayers go out to everyone down there.

How horrible. Also all those critters dying in the fire. Or sadly they don't die in the fire but lie in agony until infection kills them a week later.

The fire in Nichols Cyn is worrisome. Anyone who has driven those canyon roads, Nichols, Runyon, Laurel, Coldwater, etc knows how tight it is on those side streets that snake all through the canyons.
Tough to get out when evacuation orders are given. Hoping for a good outcome.

Another potentially big one starting in Studio City, just on the valley side of Laurel and Fryman canyons. Terrifying how big it is already. Houses are the fuel, as well as trees and brush.

How horrific. My heart goes out to you guys. Five fires joining up, over 1,100 buildings destroyed. And the biggest fire in the Los Angeles area ever.
It's going to be a major problem rebuilding and replacing infrastructure such as water, sewage, power, internet and roading. It's not like there are thousands of builders and engineers sitting around looking for work. |

Went to check up on mom this evening and discovered my neighbor's sister's place had been burned to the ground. They are in Altadena. Not sure if it high buck but its about 2 mil in today's market. The authorities came banging on every door on the street screaming get out now. They has 20 min and left. They are older and was able to get what they can in the back of their old pick up truck and drove off. Within the hour, their entire block burned to the ground. Some of those ares, such as Altadena Drive is where I normally ride my bike due to the hills and a large part is now gone. My sister has been evacuated since 5 am today. lucks mom has enough room for them. Some of my friend has to drive to San Diego for a hotel stay. All full and booked. Sad situation.

My dad had to evacuate this afternoon, because of the Runyon Canyon fire. There's a Pelican who lives **just off** Runyon. He's not there this weekend, fortunately.
There's also a new fire tonight in Studio City. If this one blows up tonight, I know of a couple other Pelicans who live not too far away. Plus, my dad. Fortunately, there's little to no wind to night in the Valley. Two anesthesiologists with whom I work lost their Palisades homes last night. One guy went to work yesterday, tried to go return home after work but was denied access, and spent the night in a hotel. He came in to work at 4:30 this morning, because he couldn't sleep. The other anesthesiologist happens to be out of town on vacation, but his home's gone, too. Lots of friends displaced tonight.

Apparently there's a program where 2-1-1 will pay for a week of AirBnB.
