Crystal Methodists and the death of a family
When I first finished my residency, I was at this bar in a small town in Texas, had both kinds of music, Country and Western. I was having a beer, looking around and I see a commotion on the other side of the dance floor. I see a guy taller than the crowd, he is following this guy that is about a foot shorter than him, knocks off the guy's cowboy hat, guy picks it up, says something to the giant, native American looking dude, then walks away. This happens 3 or 4 times, then the little guy, instead of picking up his hat, he comes back with the uppercut from hell, launches the giant dude into the air, body parallel to the ground at the apex of his short flight, like in a cartoon. Little blonde grabs tiny Rocky by the ear and drags his ass out of there. Week later, see blondie at this bar on the lake, winning a bikini contest. Her mother eventually set us up on a date, and that was 30 years ago. My brother in law, the boxer, was 70-0, won his weight class in gold gloves in Texas. Trust and believe there are some TOUGH Mexican boxers at 150 pounds in Texas. For many years, he was the baddest MoFo in the county. Literally the only person he ever lost a fight to was his sister, which made for a very amusing interview when he won the state Gold Gloves title.
Wife and I moved out to California 20 years ago, about the time he started dating a woman, who we shall call 'ho' bait. She has a "Property of the Banditos" tramp stamp, dumbass brother in law was smitten, or something. 'Ho' bait has 8 kids, no idea how many baby daddies, but as far as the spawn of 'ho' bait know, brother in law is daddy. Father in law built a house on his property for his mother in law. His sister in law and her son also moved into that house. All those people have been gone over a dozen years, so now my brother in law lives in that house, with the spawn of 'ho' bait, despite owning his own home. Ostensibly, he was paying rent. Fast forward to this year. Wife's mom spent the first half of this year dying of cancer. My wife went out to take care of her parents, and has been out there about 4 months. I have no doubt at all that the mother made the father promise to take care of meth zombie son, almost certainly insisting he does not sit in jail, because he is too delicate, or something. Her dad is fairly dyslexic and has not written a check since the Nixon administration, his wife handled all that. Turns out, brother in law was not paying rent, or anything else. His mom was paying ALL his bills, cell phone, electric, car insurance, everything, including property tax on his house that was sitting vacant. Wife figured out PDQ something was awry when she took over paying the bills. There was about one tenth as much money in saving/checking accounts as expected, all blown on Meth Family Robinson in the mother in law's house. Father in law was pretty furious when he found this out, and is concerned about losing his house. We are in a position financially where we will not allow that to happen. 'Ho' bait is on parole, naturally, and has been trespassed off the property a couple of times, but shows up last night, knocking on the door of the mother in law's house, where her adult kids are hanging out smoking meth, but they don't want to let her in. She breaks every single window in that house, 12 in all I believe. The constable comes out, and while they are arguing, 'ho' bait punches my father in law in the face, in front of my wife, who grabs her by the hair, gives her a few knees in the face throws her to the ground and commences to punching her in the face. The constables all like my father in law quite a bit. He hand loads ammunition for a most of them, and they all have known him since they were little kids. They did not hurry to pull my wife off, and 'ho' bait bumped her head getting in the back of the cop car, too bad. they said this definitely violates her probation and she is going away for 23 years. Today, less than 12 hours later, 'ho' bait came back out and was starting trouble. My wife beat her unconscious and knocked out three of her teeth, and 'ho' bait got a ride in an ambulance. Turns out, no problem for my wife because, castle doctrine. Brother in law is out today, no idea who bailed his dumb ass out of jail. My wife would not allow it, despite all the little crystal methodists begging her to get him out. I told my wife a long time ago her last brother died of cancer a few years ago. What she has now is a meth zombie who looks like her brother. Her father will not kick him out, because he promised his wife he would not. We were thinking about taking over her parents' property and moving there, but the last few months have soured her on the idea. We do not have any family left out there, but it is a nice piece of property. 7 acres, two houses, large metal building that serves as a shop and a garage. There is a 300 foot deep well too, and the property is the highest ground in the area. It floods all around there, but that house never has. He was very selective on his choice of property. He knows plenty of field craft from hunting the gulf coast since he was a lad. He looked for years for the right land that would not flood, used what plants were on the property to figure this out. Situation is not great. He lost his wife and found out she had blown all their money on enabling her son to continue Her dad will not kick out her brother. My wife is carrying a sidearm all the time, because if she turns up dead, he would inherit the house. Meth has eaten holes in his brain, but he can still figure this out. Crystal meth is a hell of a drug.

Crystal Methodist.
Sorry for the situation. Hope this is as pear-shaped as it gets.

You know, I appreciated my family even before I read this. Even the odd ones in my wife's set of inlaws are blessedly normal by contrast.
Thank you for putting some perspective on things. Kudos to your wife. Remind me not to piss her off!

Tobra, if the property is really that nice, buy it, and get the dopers out of your life. Heck, they likely won't live much longer anyway. Get restraining orders if necessary. Texas's castle doctrine will let you apply whatever force you deem necessary to keep them away.

I'm a firm believer that you CAN choose your family. I am fortunate that my wife has a great family...my family, on the other hand--haven't talked to any of them in years. Your wife's situation is not one that I would tolerate; I would just walk away. I guess I'm weird like that.

Lie thru your teeth and tell your BIL you hooked up with his connect.
Tell him you paid for a "hot shot" and the dealer dude said "he aint worth it, your right". He'll ask his connect about it, hopefully make some bad s**t come his way. Hang in there Tobra, fight OOTB

Most addictions are hard to beat...recovery rates for Meth addiction hovers around 5%, a statistic that is hard to really analyze and find a better path forward. Unfortunately, the treatment numbers only reflect those that wanted help, not those in the death spiral not seeking resolution.
I do not have an answer to the problem, only that for the grace of God go I and many others... BTW, if I have the pleasure of meeting Mrs. Tobra, I will shave my had and wear earmuffs ![]()

With some people, you can structure it as a loan and it works the same way, you will never see them again. Not the same situation but I know a guy who got a house way below market in LA a few years back because it had some weird cult of Rastafarians using it as their clubhouse and a previous owner had given them a 99 year lease that they planned on enforcing. My acquaintance, who was a bit of a nut in his own right, was pulling his hair out because he thought that he would have to give a lawyer a large retainer and begin a long legal fight to evict them. Hey, he got the deal on the house because of them. Think Hell's Angels clubhouse but I'm sure less scary people. Anyhow, I gave him the advice of approaching them in a friendly way at first and explaining that he bought the house and was planning on living in it, you knew that they were going to have to find a new clubhouse, etc., and offer them some moving cash. I told him to bring cash, at least a couple grand. He called me later and was jumping with joy because they agreed to move on down the road for $2k, which was a fraction of the attorney's retainer he was about to pay. Now I know that this is not the same as your situation but just an illustration of how cheaply people who don't have schit can be bought off. Good luck with it.
