Unconscious habits?

I have figured out that on road trips in my 911, I must be licking my lips excessively. After a day of driving it, I have to use a chap stick as my lips are dry and sore. Chap stick fixes the sore lips. I have started to just keep one in my pocket and apply regularly on trips.

In day to day living I virtually never apply anything to my lips, except my wife.

Another one I noticed recently, whenever I go to kneel on the ground to inspect or clean a part of the car, I always use my right knee down first.

I am sure I have others, like everyone else.

What are things you do the same way every time without consciously thinking about it.

I took up dirtbike riding during COVID. It is a really fantastic outlet for stress, gets me outside, rewards tinkering and wrenching, and is good exercise.

Except there is risk. When I am riding some seriously challenging stuff, I often find I am not breathing. Which is problematic. We all need to breathe.

Talking to myself when I'm doing challenging, repetitive tasks. My flight instructor told me I talked to myself all the way through my first landing. Same with the DE instructor. I do a puzzle which involves several steps performed in order. As I figure out the steps and the order I start speaking them out loud.

We all have idiosyncracies, like putting our right sock on first. Me, I've come to realize I have a much more profound habit that drives me nuts. I believe I don't deserve to be happy. And when I am happy? I think of reasons why I'm not.

For example, I keep telling myself my house is too extravagant, it's frivolous, and I can't afford it. I tell myself I should sell it, save my money for god-knows-what, and live in an old trailer. Why do I tell myself these lies? Because I can't believe I deserve to be happy. I can't believe I'm not the failure I was always told I'd be.

Wow Dixie...this hit's home with a lot of us I bet. The fact that you feel this way should prove that you do deserve happiness and rewards for your efforts. Entitled people rarely reflect on this.

You deserve your happiness...you worked hard for it and people respect you for being you!!!

I put my fridge right next to my tool cabinet for just that reason.

When I speak to someone I always notice their teeth. I hate that I do this because some people don't seem to have a mirror or a toothbrush.

I was going to reply to Dixie's and relate it to my wife, but I thought better of it and decided to agree with the beer habit instead

Honestly, biting my lips is my one really bad habit (besides alcohol and laziness). I guess it's nerves, but I've done it my whole life.

Also grinding my teeth in my sleep. Dentists tried for years to get me to wear mouth guards when I sleep. A dentist finally showed me the casting of an old man's teeth who ground his teeth his whole life. Scared me into wearing mouth guards ever since.

I cant close a drawer or cabinet. I will shut it and just leave it all slightly ajar. not sure why. maybe I dont like the last slam?

Hey Dixie,

You are sort of doing a version of Imposter Syndrome. I had a horrible case of this in my career at one time. Not sure how I overcame it, but I eventually did. Anyone who has these lines of self-doubt (and similar) needs to find help or help yourself. There is ZERO benefit from this sort of dialogue.

(Not to say that you shouldn't live within your means. People spending far far too much is a different issue)

It happened again this morning. (It happens every day) I took my readers off my head and set them somewhere - parts unknown. I've tried using croakies to keep 'em around my neck, I buy them in loud and obnoxious colors, I have many, many pairs around the garage, but my subconscious invariably makes me take them completely off.

I count stuff. Steps, turns of the old cast iron coffee grinder. The character of Harold Crick in "Stranger Than Fiction" resonated with me.
I do notice if the knives in the rack are not in "their place". I suppose that is just a form of OCD.

I talk to myself all the time when sorting things, and working on things. I thought that maybe I was going crazy but, I guess I'm okay.

No!!! Do not ever feel that way about yourself, you deserve to be happy and you have worked to get to a place of happiness. Don't worry, be happy!!!
