Good luck, jyl. I'm just shocked you say your AC has been working for 25 years!! Around here, we only count on about 10-15 years before needing a new unit. I just had to replace mine a few months ago...$15k.
Hopefully, yours is a simple repair and you're back to cool air soon!

What!? ![]() ![]() ![]() 10 to 15 years??? I just replaced my fully operational heat pump that I installed in 1994 with a new one last fall. Only reason I replaced my old one was, I wanted to get a 410A unit before they were sold out of them. I had to replace three capacitors on the unit but that's it over the course of ownership.

Capacitor and very low on R410. Cost some money but it’s working great. I’m so pleased to not be looking at a new unit. A Lennox unit can’t be cheap.
To reward the unit, I power-washed the fins as clean as I could and generally tidied up its little wooden enclosure. Funny - the tech asked me when I last changed the HVAC filter (“a couple months ago” is my default answer) and to remove the HVAC filter and bring it to him. You know the fear of getting in an accident and going to the ER hoping your underwear is clean? My filter was nice and clean :-)
