I am applying for the next promotion.
I dont want it at all.
but its the lesser of two evils. my core group of supervisors did a pinky swear to apply when our boss retires. why? to dilute the pool of candidates to hopefully prevent a candidate from getting the job. lets call this person, "Karen". no offense to real Karens, or the ones that end up YouTube videos harassing people. Karen is a tyrant. Karen is weird. she once hosted a safety meeting and did yoga moves in Lululemon-wear showing the importance of flexibility on a construction job site. she goes jogging on job sites and would leave us all the work when we were coming up thru the ranks. she embraces the management style called, "its my way or the highway". Karens worst move is she delegates everything, and takes all the credit at the end. she once played us a video of some CEO touting this method of leadership. hahaha.. if she gets it, I retire. so I am typing up one of the best Statements of Qualification I have ever written. just pulling words and magic out of my butt ![]() wish me luck. I am pulling for my friend and coworker Jim, or Jason...I hope either of them get it. call me "plan C'. hahhaha...

Depending on how you hire, getting on the hiring committee might be the better move. We have a team that compromises one or two from the hiring department plus 3 to 5 others from around the college, from the academic, professional/support and career service groups
I have been on several committees where I flat out stated that the person they were considering would be bad for the department/college. Explained why... and the searches either were re-started or a different candidate was selected.

Good luck and good move. Is there any way to talk to Karen's boss about Karen?
Just a thought, run your statement of qualification through AI after you write it to see if it can sweeten it any more. Most of the time, I'm not 100% happy with what AI spits out, but it sometimes offers improvements that you can then tweak the parts that you aren't happy with a bit. Good luck!

If you get it, you have to wear yoga pants.

Eek.
If you still work for the State, be very careful...if 'Karen' doesn't get the promotion and any of your 'core group' cracks or slips up and she finds out why, you are all going to go down like a shot dove. Going off road if there is an established promotion process, government organizations or private corporations, while tempting, is a bad idea. 'Karen' will win and she will revel in it.

Good luck Vash,
If you have to go to work, you might as well take the biggest check they offer. I’m guessing you will be collecting a pension at some point and the extra salary should boost the payout for every year for the rest of your life- bait ain’t cheap!

I know someone that spent the time and money got get a PhD so she could teach full time and move out of her A&P support role. The hiring committee wanted her, the dept chair wanted her, the Provost said "no, keep her where she is" She talked to a lawyer (good one) and was basically told there was nothing to be done, as long as it wasn't for race, age, gender, etc.

I think you will like retirement, possibly get a larger fishing kayak and spend more time on the water.

Yoga pants,,,,, Is Karen hot?
I mean, we need as much data that can be provided to make a reasoned suggestion.

Two options, both mentioned above. Either get on the hiring committee or nail that promotion yourself. "There is no 'try'. Do or do not."

If you get it for a year your retirement pension would, as you know be based on that salary. I might anticipate your current salary & years of service might already be bouncing off the PERS max pension ceiling. I don't recall all the details of the PERS pension reform but maybe you were in before so they implemented it can't cap your pension?
My sister who was a probation officer lucked out big time by her supervisor retiring and they inserted her in an acting roll until the position was filled with her getting the higher salary. The county drug their feet on the hiring and she served about a year and a half in the position and retired at that supervisor pension rate at 50 being LEO.

Not joking. Have an AI or two write up a cover letter. Then steal anything you like from this for your letter.
I used Chat GPT to write a letter for my disabled daughter to apply for a job. It was very very good. Or, you can sabotage Karen. Reddit r/prorevenge might be a good place to start. Best of luck. Or worst of luck to Karen. Whatever works. |

LOL! He is a fisherman. Instead of "I fought the fish for hours with 2# test and when I finally landed it without breaking the line it was bigger than me" it'll be "I ran the project, came in way under budget and finished in half of the time scheduled and did the work myself. Since I've been a manager, the employees are all happier, come in early, leave late, and have requested salary cuts because they think we pay them too much because working with me is their life's dream."
