Let's all discuss this...

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-15345095/Russian-Porsche-owners-cars-immobilised-country-deliberate-satellite-interference-feared.html

Long story short, someone hacked the 958 and later anti theft com's and bricked a bunch of Cayennes and Panamera's. Ooops.

“Last year, MPs in the United Kingdom were warned that Beijing could remotely stop electric cars manufactured in China, as relations between the two nations deteriorated.”

I don’t know what to say about all of it except comment that the world has gone to ****

It's been 'doable' for a long long time. I'm not surprised, too much.

New cars comes with 4G LTE eSIM cards... 2025 model year and newer have encrypted ecms and this will brick all new cars when the powers to be say so...

VW did the whole car-net from 2014-2019 using 3G. 3G has been phased out in the US except for that stingray tool...

The RF are the pioneers on photonics, laser systems, and jamming. Top tier technology really. They could possibly be jamming whole areas due to the current climate and conflict, as stated in the article.

My two old cars are safe from that type of attack. My 85 911 came with a 4K chip, but it now has the big 8K chip from Steve Wong.

Any computer system can and some day will be hacked. It has always amazed me that car keys can be hacked from outside the house, and the thieves drive off in your new car. Just copy the signal in the purse left near the door from the garage into the house.

I hope VW & Porsche take that Russian hack to heart, and harden the computers in new cars.

My understanding is that they are activated but that you don’t have access. At least that’s the case with Toyota. It looks like connectivity has become unavoidable. I think I remember legislation a while back that caused an uproar but was soon ’forgotten’. Imbedded in all those papers you sign when buying a new car is their permission to collect and maintain data that is available to law enforcement with a warrant. Insurance companies are particularly pleased, too.

This has been the case for years with anything made in China. It’s why we can’t use Chinese components for defense applications.

Most ECUs record telemetry data that can be used to determine speed and control application prior to a crash. It was a topic of debate even back in 2003 when I was a diesel mechanic, our diagnostic computers could pull the data but it required a warrant.

One doesn't really disable the remote communication on new cars without removing the hardware...

The relatively easy way to disconnect is to disconnect the roof antenna. (of course, everything else like GPS will also go silent)

That would probably disable the telemetrics preventing a remote kill, but wouldn’t the data still be recorded?

A good friend has a newish Ford Explorer. He turned off all the communications, and said hell no to paying for the monthly fee. His vehicle has crash detection. A bad driver pulled right out in front of him, and he slammed on the brakes, and the system took over and added even more brakes, and he said he was real happy no one was behind him. Then the crash detection system asked if he needed it to call 911. He cussed at it, and as he had not hit the other car, he just went on his way. The system was supposed to be off, but in an emergency, it works anyway, so it is on, and just monitoring everything, even when "off".

They could brick your car, but then they could not listen to you while you are sitting in it anymore
