Removing WD-40 from SC
My son sprayed a fair bit of WD-40 on the right rear fender of my SC. What should I do to remove it?
|
your kidding right?
is this a candid camera post? just use some soap and water.... then perhaps re wax the quarter... heck do the whole car as 911 are small... |
Mineral spirits, kerosene or "Prep Sol" which is a grease and wax remover that you purchase at auto paint stores. Any of the above will remove the WD-40 along with the wax on your car, but will not hurt the paint.
|
Tim, I think that's good advice. "Hi Mom!"
|
Wash the car, it is mainly oil, get it off ASAP. I would wipe it off with a paper towel, clean it with a damp rag with dish soap, wash the car and then wax the area as all of the wax is gone. When all done you can move on to the punishment phase of being a parent.
|
Yikes, sounds like you are going to earn your parenting money tonight.
BTW, what was he doing with a can of WD-40? |
I did wash the car twice immediately after. I just wanted to know if I should do anything else.
TimT I fell your post is neddlessly rude. |
Seems an odd post, I mean, WD 40 is oil!?
I have never heard of WD 40 damaging paint? |
I think use acid to get the oil off.
|
Uh oh... Pierre was offended by TimT's "needlessly rude" remark.
I don't think it was really "rude"... considering the unusual nature of the question. Break out more wine and cheese and all shall be forgotten! |
Pierre, if you've been reading here lately to use WD-40 to remove old gaskets, I can understand why the thought might cross your mind that it can't be too good for your paint. The product is fairly innocuous; it contains a solvent and silicone. While it could be a problem if you wanted to paint your car soon, thorough washing and re-waxing should nulify any potential problems with that aspect. Other than that, I can see no alarm about having the product on your paint.
Don't take TimT's remark in offense. He is not known to me to consciously make fun of other people's posts. It's just that in the year and a half that I have been here, I've never seen a post with concern about WD-40. He maybe thought you were trying a joke. |
LMAO!!
Karl if this question popped up on www.914club.com board think of the fun we could have. Needlessly rude? actualy I typed my response in a kind of state of disbelief...that someone could ask this question.. I was thinking its a trick question, and that Alan Funt would pop up telling me Im on candid camera. I recommended you wash the car then rewax get over it Pierre |
|
LOL Bill what is that?
oopss crying my eyes out LOL |
Well, I guess I need to retract my opinion on Tim. He WILL make fun of you. Too bad. Fun on 914Club?, be my guest. Come on back to this 911 board when you have a little more patience for a new poster.
|
Sorry, I've been drinking to much Coca Cola, Tim that's on page 4 of the smilies.
|
Milt, I really didnt mean to break balls, I just started typing.... and well...... hey Im from NY lets blame it on that LOL
|
Yo Tim.....don't get too nasty, he might surrender and you would have to feed him.....:p

Removing the rear fender with WD 40, I don't think so. WD 40 is good but not that good. Removing the rear fender will require a good sawzall or a cutting torch. I would suggest masking off the the painted areas you do not want to damage.
Seriously, I look at WD 40 like any other solvent it is probably not good for paint in the long run and it should be removed as soon as possible. |
I wouldn't have thought that bird poop would be more corrosive than WD40 but I guess it is. I learned to get that stuff off double time quik or it f**ks up my paint.

Stop waxing and start driving PLEASE!!!!
If you drive your car fast enuf the WD40 will blow right off :D cheers, Jeroen PS I can't blame my daughter for stoopid stunts I pull... everybody knows she's smarter than me :D |
Due to the severity of the damage of the caustic combination of chemicals known as WD-40, I think that the car should be covered in a combination of baking soda (to soak up the wd-40) and Lemon Pledge (to bring back the shine) let it sit for a couple hours and then wipe with a warm, soapy sponge. It should be good as new! (just be careful not to get any pledge on your skin-oooh that's nasty!)
|
Use brakefluid to rinse it off :D
cheers, Jeroen |
I have used WD-40 to remove tar spots and many other kinds of unwanted stuff from car paint.
From the WD-40 website ( http://www.wd-40.com/Brands/wd40_faqs.html ): "What does WD-40 contain? While the ingredients in WD-40 are secret, we can tell you what WD-40 does NOT contain. WD-40 does not contain silicone, kerosene, water, wax, graphite, chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), or any known cancer-causing agents. I've heard that people use WD-40 as a cleaner/remover. What can it be used on? WD-40 removes sap, tar, adhesives, labels and tape from surfaces without damaging existing paint. It's an effective cleaner for tools, equipment, and vehicles. Use it to remove splattered bugs from the front of cars. WD-40 will even help remove gum from carpet. Just spray, wait, and wipe with a clean cloth." http://www.wd-40.com/ |
I've used WD-40 on oxidized paint before, does a surprisingly good job of removing oxidized paint. I wouldnt reccommend having it for too long on a good finish though. Just soak up as much of ti as possible, then wash the car with dish soap.
|
This is good (also from the WD-40 website):
"So, what's in the concentrate??? Only a handful of people in the entire world know the answer to that. In fact, even the number of people who know is secret!" "If it's not stuck and it's supposed to be, duct tape it! If it's stuck and it's not supposed to be, WD-40 it!" Which of course means that Pierre's son should have used duct tape on that fender, not WD-40! http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/.../leapfrogA.gif |

Lots of people, myself included, use WD-40 to remove the residue from racers tape after track events. Its harmless, just use a little soap and water to rid yourself of the greasy film it leaves.
|
Hey I'll have to try it for removing bird poop. :D
|
This reminds me of the time I sprayed WD-40 on the linkage of a carb. on one of those drag style boats-Big huge ass engine type. The owner got pissed because I did not use the red tube stating that to much wd-40 would make it worse-HUH?
|
Is there any way to vote this thread worse than 1 star? I doubt if Pierre will ever post again. Nice job of welcoming a new member, guys.
|
Come on... All is in good fun
I think Pierre should have an idea not to worry about the WD40 accident by now Most of the guys that reacted "harsh" also hang out on 'nuther BBS, where we usually don't take each other or ourselves too serious :D I bet none of us tried to chase Pierre away, or make him feel unwelcome... cheers, Jeroen |

Pierre, I know lots of folks told you how to do it, but if it was my 8 year old boy, HE would be the one cleaning it off even if it took us all day. That way he will remember why this is not done. |
Sorry Pierre for any offense perceived. I hope you received your answer and are willing to post more to learn about your Porsche.
Regards, |
"Would it be humanly possible to have skin that thin??"
You be the judge. As posted by Pierre: TimT I fell your post is neddlessly rude. You know, I think Pierre might be in Canada or perhaps France. You wonder why residents of foreign countries think Americans are so boorish. I reiterate: There have been recent posts here about removing gasket sealant with WD-40. Certainly seems plausible to me that someone who is unfamiliar with all things automotive could have concerns. No slack here apparently. I sure hope I never get what he got for a trivial question. I'm running scared of saying the wrong thing. Too bad. Sort of lets the wind out of the sails as far as Pelican 911BBS goes. |
