Just wondering?
Is it me or are Porsche drivers prone to wearing caps? It just seems that I see too many men in their late 30's, 40's and 50's dressing like eleven-year-old boys. Perhaps there's a famous old picture of Steve McQueen in his Porsche wearing a cap somewhere? I don't know. Is it all part of a mid-life crisis? I'm guessing. As a matter of fact I've seen a few guys in other sports cars sporting caps as well - is this all part of some image I don't understand?
I've often heard people on this board discribe 911's as sophisticated, which I would tend to aggree considering the extra care in driving one and the "aquired taste" of owning one, but this baseball cap thing certainly goes against the idea of "sophistication". I mean no offense to any cap wearers out there reading this; I've only had my car for about a year and I'm just curious what to expect as far as any future fashions I may migrate towards? I've never thrown a slider but I guess I could learn how? Maybe I'm reading too far into this - is it mearly a bald thing? Without sounding too much like a Communist or a Republican and trying to prevent people from doing what they want to do, I'd like to suggest that we bann baseball caps when driving or attending any P-car events, either formal or informal. Let's let the Audi TT crowd and Mazda people wear the caps. For those who are just too used to wearing adornments on their head, why not try replacing that old juvenile cap with perhaps a headband and a couple feathers stuck into it? Or maybe a funnel like the Tin Man did? Or even a barret or two? I think what really made Steve McQueen so cool was that he was a true individual. Please know that this is not meant as a general rant against Porsche drivers, of which I am one of. I've talked to many of you over this board through posts and have met some of you at an autoX and think it's a pretty nice group of people - I just don't understand the cap trend.

I wear a cap in the cold weather because my hair is cut very short and my head gets cold (Targa). In the summer, I wear one so I don't get a sunburned scalp... no other reason. Seems very practical to me and since I have short hair, I don't get "hat-hair". I've seen people do worse... and look worse.

Wait until you start losing your hair and you'll change your mind about caps.

I wear a cap when I drive my wife's Miata, but when in a coupe, it's not really necessary - there's no "wind" inside a coupe.
When I'm on my motorcycles, I wear a helmet, so that's no cap. I suspect people wear caps inside a coupe for the same reason my 10 year old wears a cap (and he has lots of hair), and that's to be "Looking Good". It's all part of finding your own personal style, instead of copying what "they" do. It's the same reason Harleys are so popular nowadays, the "looking Good" syndrome. Anyone who really wanted to ride a bike well would not be on a Harley, and thus not "looking Good". But then, if you really loved driving your 911 or your bike, you wouldn't need the approval of others. Cheers!!!

When I drive around in my 911, I usually don a 3 piece suit. Occasionally, I will wear tails and place the top hat next to me on the seat (if the Targa roof is off). The white gloves are great for checking the oil and keeping my hands clean when I change the tires.

May I suggest a course in World History or Political Science before we lump those two groups under one heading?

Dear Fog, your post only managed to offend half the people on this board. If you try hard enough, maybe you can offend the rest of them in your next post.

Dear Fog, If you really don't want to prevent people from doing what they want to do, why are you suggesting a ban on the caps? Exactly why is it that you feel you have to understand? I would suggest that it is not really your place to decide what anybody does (well except maybe your kids/family).

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Fog, start a new thread posting your location, I'm sure someone could chime in with a recomendation of a good therapist, because I'd say you have some serious issues. Also, who's the "we" that you suggest banning hats, because I'm pretty certain that "I" don't fit into your "we". I sometimes drive a Toyota, so you should include that with the Audi TT and Mazda drivers who wear a hat. I also tend to wear a hat while I work, drive, walk, and occasionally on the crapper, so maybe you could include that in your broad generalization as well. Now, on to this issue of you young hooligans wearing shorts....... ![]()

if you take a map with you and plan your route, you might end up wandering less...although wandering in a 911 can be pretty fun...unless you're low on fuel, in which case serious wandering causes stress.
Oh...you were *wondering*, not *wandering*. Well that's just silly...nevermind. |

I'm far from being bald but I wear a ball cap when I feel I need to. Here is a list of the times I would wear a ball cap.
1. When I use to play softball 2. When I play golf (this is why I gave up softball) 3. When I snow ski 4. When I wake up in the morning and I'm to lazy to shower (specifically saturdays) 5. When I use to be able to drive the Targa with the top off. (I say use to because the car is not driveable now) 6. Any time I am in the garage wrking on the car. I would never wear a ball cap at the dinner table or while in the saddle. I find those two situations to be just plain rude.

The whole malignant melanoma on the scalp thing keeps me in caps when the targa top is off. I want to be around long enough to enjoy my car.....
