but........ronald reagan did do the budget cut that basically turned all the insane people (veterans) loose on the streets. these days, it seems that 80% of them are wandering around in san francisco. and that was not a good thing.

Thom,
I see it the the same way. I do not wish ill will towards the man nor did I in the day. The man was a figure head for a power circle that bankrupted our country. You forgot to mention that he was also responsible for freeing the huge corporations of the responsibility of providing a just retirement plan for there workers. I bet he was a nice man who acted his best part for those 8 years. A hero? Come on people, open your eyes and minds. We are being fuched here.

So when Clinton dies I assume that we can expect nothing but glowing remarks here?

Scotty,
Take a deep breath!! The man has a different opinion from yours. That is the foundation of the country that the flag on your SUV was founded on. You are exactly the result of what Thom was pointing out. Congrats, you just proved his point.

oh yea, i also forgot. in my new political awareness, i seem to remember ronald reagan's "trickle down economic" was a real crowd pleaser. he almost tanked the economy.

still sorry for the families loss.

That does explain a lot about San Francisco. The most liberal wacko city in the country.

WARNING.

Folks, can we PLEASE put political differences aside for just a moment and a thread?

It is very sad that I may have to close this thread because of political mud-slinging.

IMHO, President Reagan was a great man. He did much to bring us out of a cold war. He stood for what is right and just.

If you do not agree with me, so be it. Just because you disagree with me doesn't mean you need to disrespect him. The man is not yet buried, yet some of you are already making a point of picking apart this man. To you I ask this: how would you like it if you heard such negative comments about a loved one at their funeral. IF YOU DON'T HAVE ANYTHING NICE TO SAY, THEN DON'T SAY ANYTHNG AT ALL. Young children know this rule: if you don't, maybe it's time you learned it!

I suggest that those who have participated in such mud-slinging stop this immediately, and if you have any respect for the man, please return to your posts and do some editing.

My prayers go out to his family: may they find comfort in this time of grief.

Regards,
-Zoltan.

PS It is truly sad that we as an online community cannot put political differences aside for just one moment, and allow others to pay tribute to our past president.

Based on his popularity numbers (both in and out out of office) it is with great happiness that I can say you Reagan bashers are in the cavernous minority. Rarely is there a man so loved.

Z-Man,

Again, its not your place to pontificate over political discussions here. That's what the off-topic board is for. If you have a problem with this discussion, I would suggest that you eliminate the off-topic board from Pelican.

Your comments represent a mind-set that Reagan, more than most political figures in our modern history, sought to eliminate.

Ok, I'll throw out the first olive branch.

Not every single one of the liberal mental defects in San Francisco is a wacko.

Sorry if I offended anyone.

Reagan will always be remembered as one of the greatest American leaders in history. He will be missed.

Fortunately he is now better off in his passing than he was in his poor mental health.

And studies have proven that very few are actually veterans. In fact, a smaller percentage than veterans are in the population. A faded field jacket just helps to get handouts.

To be fair...

I remember trickle down economics. I remember Iran-Contra. I also recall Libya. All three are blemishes. But what president is unblemished? Okay, maybe Jefferson, whom Reagan said he knew.

Aside from examples such as Hitler and Stalin, I try to not look at a departed leader in only negative ways. Fact is you can't deny what good Reagan did do for the U.S. You'll recall in 1979 Iranian fundamentalists stormed our embassy in Tehran and took hostage many Americans. You'll recall that Carter truly did nothing to rectify this, and made us look rather emasculated as a so-called superpower. Reagan did rectify the hostage situation, and without issuing the decree to fire a single bullet. But that isn't nearly as important as he bringing back a sense of pride to being American. While he was on board, many countries looked to us with admiration. His achievements crossed party lines, which is what I truly like about the man. I cannot and will not say that about our current president, but about Reagan, history has proven him well. We needed him after we more-or-less lost the war in Vietnam, went through a sort of do-nothing period in the late 70s and then ended the decade on a sour and depressed note.

Ronald Reagan was the greatest leader of our time. It is fitting he died during the Memorial day/D-day time of year...his actions freed more people than that entire war did....without a shot fired.

actually what Cliff was referring to was the almost total dismantaling of the mental health system in California. Thousands of mentally ill people were turned out on the streets to fend for themselves with no meds, no followup, no nothing. One of the low points in CA history.

Hey Todd: what year was that? I'd like to see some information on that. I remember bits and pieces - a tremendous fiasco.
