A 14 year old boy died after having received 85 lashes;

A 14 year old boy is sentenced to 85 lashes for breaking his Ramadan fast !
A 14 year old boy died on Thursday, November 11th, after having received 85 lashes; according to the ruling of the Mullah judge of the public circuit court in the town of Sanandadj he was guilty of breaking his fast during the month of Ramadan.

The Kurdish site Rojeh“heh Lāt reports that the young man“s identity has not been disclosed. He was scheduled for burial on Saturday, November 13th (after 3 days at the local morgue), in the cemetery of Beheshteh Mohammadi in Sanandadj. However due to the public“s realization of the events surrounding the boy“s circumstances the cemetery was stormed [in protest] and his burial did not take place.

According to informed sources, supervisors have instructed that the burial take place in the presence of his closest relatives, surveyed by security forces.

This is the problem,...

Religion... mainly made up/interpretted by people.

no "religion" would advocate the killing or injury of a person to the state of death, for anything like this,,

One way or another the guilty will always be punished if not in this world in the next !

Peace out

Ade

Yeah, but what the report didn't say was that the boy broke his fast by eating a Twinkie he found in a discarded MRE.
Damned Americans....

More to the point though, the cultural differences between that part of the world and ours, are so vast that it defys understanding. Stoning was not that all uncommon years ago, and still exists today in some parts of the world. Some may say that although we consider ourselves 'civilized', we are simply heathens. I'm just happy I live where I do....

this has to do more about what you believe is right or wrong, or in other words, what's ethical and moral. These views are separate from religion.
Religion too frequently, as interpreted by certain groups, justifies the killing of others in the name of "God" and this is immoral.

Don't disagree at all. Unfortunately some countries moral values are driven entirely by religion. And different interpretations at that. I guess it's what you've grown up with. Remember when you couldn't eat meat on Friday?

defys understanding.

What I find ironic is our lib's here in the US, who are sickened by the religious leanings of the Bush admin . . . which, in-turn, is sickened by the hyper-religious leanings in the mid-east.

I mean here we have the Bush admin kicking the crap out of religious extremism . . .such as the Taliban who treat women worse than livestock . .teachings to kids about how to strap-on explosives, for their god. . . And yet, the left treats the Bush admin as the enemy.

The pissy religious extremists in the middle-east are terrified of open communications with the rest of the world. So they want to take us out. . . .put us into a dark-ages . . .ALL of us, who dare to show the world what is reasonable.

Meanwhile, the lib's are focused on taking the word "God" out of flag-salutes, and putting "fags" into marriages.

Then they (lib's) sit and wonder how anyone could see a guy like Bush as "moderate".

Good point.
And isolationism is an excellent way to control a group of people....

island, from your statements, it appears you don't understand "libs." For one, I don't know how "religion" has been tied to the war in Iraq. I thought it had to do with WMDs, isn't that what Bush told congress/the UN?

So your "assumptions" appear to be off base. Not surprising though.

dhoward:

In light of these discussions, how does one justify the death penalty? Do you think that some in other religions may feel the electric chair is barbaric and inhumane?

Jesus said, "Let he without sin cast the first stone".
I know these rag heads don't believe the same as I believe, but most Americans should.

Dave, in what context is that used? I once learned that the bible for any religion is all the same. Its the religion that you beleive in that takes what part of the bible it wants and teaches it. If one were to sit down and read the whole bible, it would be too much, and they would go insane.

Wether this is true or not, is anyones beleife. But for those who wonder why we are over there, this horrendus beating, among many other reasons, seems to be a good one.

Nobody is perfect. The guy giving the lashings has never done ANYTHING wrong? Any religion that you are apart of can accept that. Its the wackos like the ones giving the belting to the kid that are the wrong ones. If there God dissaproves of braking fast, than he will deal with him in the afterlife. If the kid killed someone, thats one thing. But he was probably already starving for christs sake.

God rest his soul.

Jesus was walking by and these men (of course) were throwing stones at a woman. Jesus asked why they were doing that. The men said that the woman was a prostitute and for her "sins" she must die. Jesus said "let those without sin cast the first stone."

I wish more would heed Jesus' teachings. We'd be such a better society.

Sigh.....

CC, I t hink you already know the answer to that one. Look at all of the vigils carried out when someone is about to be executed. Whether you belive in the actual death penalty or not, I think you'll agree that it's not carried out enough to be an effective deterrent. The same can be said for any form of discipline that's not carried out with consistancy.

What are you saying .. .or asking?

Are you saying my observation is wrong?

Are you suggesting that terrorism does NOT leverage religion? . .or only minimally leverages religion and religious zelots?

dhoward, I guess my point is...who is the know-all on what is barbaric?

A deeply religious muslim may be horrified by the electric chair, and we're horrified by a beheading (I am for sure...yuck).

One thing that has been missed is this story appears to horrify muslims as well considering the storming of the cemetary in protest.

I'm saying island, I don't like being lied to by the administration re Iraq...I was under the impression it had to do with WMDs and not religion.

And, no "lib" I know ever disagreed with the actions against the Taliban.

Appears you're doing anything to find some sort of "hypocricy" where there is none.

So then your "point" is changing. (?)

What was that about "religion not being been tied to the war in Iraq."
