My mother and father died in 2003 within 6 weeks of each other; Dad rather quickly from an aneurism, and Mom slowly from MS.

My daughters were lucky enough to enjoy the special relationship of a great-grandmother for a few years (despite her cognitive decline) before she passed...and remember her fondly. Sorry to hear. Lost my mom to Parkinson's (actually leukemia, but she had been pretty much bedridden for the last year or so) about 2 years ago. Be there for your dad now...I called mine every day for about 6 months or so. It gets better with time.
