140mph... in an '94 911 C4, a '94 S500, a '91 Dinan M5, an '00 Dinan M Roadster, and most recently an '88 911 Carrera hiding an S Car Go motor in the back. I may have a mental block with going faster than 140 in a car, however, I may not ever see the need or have the desire to go that fast again.

Here goes:
Motorcycles: 165+mph on my 2004 Honda CBR1000RR is my highest on a bike. I've seen the far side of 150 mph on many other bikes I've had. Cars: 137 mph or so, speed limited in my M3. 130 mph, speed limited in my GTI. 170+ in a Ferrari 550. Haven't had my '89 Carrera long enough to probe the outer reaches of 5th gear yet. That being said, lets be careful out there! David |

Doing 1205kt groundspeed @ FL550 (even 600 sometimes) for hours in a row is nothing you can do with military bird, except maybe in XB-70 or SR-71. You can push the fighter trough the mach 2 for a short dash but they usually run of juice after 10 minutes. This is cool: http://www.groundspeedrecords.com/ph...%201205kts.jpg It was truly a beautiful bird and I miss it dearly: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1171630017.jpg |
That's all good if this were an aviation forum, ha!
Back to cars........ 175mph on 4 wheels. And I have film. |
140 plus in my 70 Pontiac lemans that had a balanced 455 in it when i was young and stupid. the speedo went to 140 the needle wound past that and e brake light to about 10 mph then just started bouncing after that the car lifted and got REALLY smooth, which scared me so i backed off. now that I'm old and stupid 140 in my carrera so far. and haven't tried the turbo yet

125 in my 911
150 on a suzuki 750 .96 mach going straight down in a T-38 |
~150 in the Carrera
~120 in the '69 S And I hit 132 on my Suzuki Katana 600... by far the scariest of all! |
150 or so in the 911
130+ on a 1987 Yamaha FZ600 130+ in a 1981 Triumph TR-8 Conv. 110 in a 1974 Fiat 124 Spyder and 1984 VW GTI 80 in a rusty 1972 VW Bug. Bug was by far the scariest... |

You still have that SRT8? I have been looking at getting one and wondered what it's like to live with. Particularly in the city. Would be interested in your comments. |
157 on the back of a Kawasaki. 160+ in a Pantera. over 140-150 several times in a Roadrunner, Corvette, Porsche 930, Lotus and a couple times over 130 in my old Chevy truck before I pulled the 327. The scariest time was on the Kawasaki riding a 2 lane blacktop (River Road, New Orleans) at over 150. nothing but curves and me sitting on the back. And then once going to a James Gang concert in the Roadrunner.. We had 20 minutes to go 40 miles to make it on time. The problem was the 3-4 small bridges on the way. Hit those at 145 and you would be airborn for what seemed like forever. All my older friends raced cars before I was old enough to drive. I have no idea how fast we would go in a short distance but all I could do was try to hang on. Camaros, 57 Chevies, early Chevy II's. scary fast! They all came home with trophies every weekend from the races. The old Anglia my friend had for a while would ride the rear wheels thru 2 gears at least. Another friend had an Opel GT with a big block Chevy and full cage. never got to ride in that one.

SRT8 front end is extremely low......KERACK!
Neat car, however - |
Forgot! 70 on my 10 speed bike holding onto the back of a car. Last time I did that. I built a boat 7 ft long, 4 ft wide, about 10-12 inches deep. It would do about 35-40 with a 15hp motor. The boat would rise out of the water and ride on the cavitation plate on the lower unit. didn't go that fast but it was plenty scary. No one would ride with me for some reason. Also had a 9ft boat that would do about 60. That doesn't sound that fast but when you're a few inches over the water in something so small and nothing but the lower unit is in the water, it feels much much faster.

I've ridden in a '03 Cobra at 155mph. Also I've ridden in a Supercharged Z06 Corvette at 170+. That was scary, we were running out of straight highway really quick!

88 mph in a Delorean, then everything went blank and I ended up here.
Thought i would resurrect an old thread :D |
You mean today?
|
In my dads 525 i hit 125, been a passenger with him where we averaged like 110 for over an hour topping out at 135
In the 924S i've hit 115, little scary the two times i have done it as tires werent great the first time and after replacing the tires the suspension was pretty soft the second time...hoping that this summer i will get it all sorted out and have another crack at it |
Oh yeah... 120 in a stock 1970 VW bug. Well maybe it wasn't exactly stock....:D

The fastest I've ever been in a road car isn't amazingly interesting. I hit a 135mph one Sunday morning in my old Alfa Romeo 164 V6 on the M4 motorway in England, she was steady as a rock, there was more to come but I found my self catching a bit of traffic up and backed off.
What was an interesting experience was V maxing my old 1000cc Mini some eleven or so years ago. It was a moonlit night, nice wide down hill section of dual carriage way, no traffic what so ever. The old car was running well and visibility was very good so I opened the taps, kept her nailed and watched the needle slowly work its way around the dial. 80 mph came up fairly quickly but then everything went into slow motion! 90 came and went, then 95 (which is were the numbers actually run out!) and then finally I had the needle off the dial and pointing at the ignition light! Woo hoo! That was it, there was no more to come, I had maxed the mini :D |
how fast you gone
In 1967 I saw 130 in a buddy's XKE. Damn, for the next 25-30 years I couldn't get the 356 over 105 down the side of a mountain even with the hot rod motor, just ran out of gears. Then in 2002 I got the 1988 911 Carrera to repeat the 1967 130 mph speed and finally got it to 145 mph recently with tuning tricks. I don't have the balls to get it's replacement over 120, seeing all that investment disintegrating around me has me very conservative. Call me chicken, but looking for 165 at the Petty ride along next month.

Fastest I've ever been: 120mph in a 964 that picked me up hitchhiking from Montreal
Fastest I've ever driven: 95mph in my '96 Jetta, on vegetable oil. On diesel it caps out at about 90 Neither of those were as hairy as 70 in my Samurai. Talk about white knuckles! |
