BTW, one upped myself since then. An indicated 177mph. Not sure how far off the speedo is, but the car did dyno at 250hp at the wheels, which translates to 290 or so at the flywheel. Stock factory-claimed top-speed is 162mph. Lowered, it should reduce the drag a bit. Don't know how fast that actually is. It sure the hell felt fast! BTW, this was at 3:30 A.M, and I was literally the only car on the 4-lane freeway. Never saw another car the whole way home. |
135+ in my old Saab (the 4-door Porsche) on the Jicarilla Apache rez between Cuba and Counselor on NM 550.....
110+ in the '69 barn find on the Sandia Pueblo Hwy 330 just after getting the p-car back from Russ Kelso in Corrales who put in a '67 race engine because the '69 engine had rusted into a boat anchor; plenty of room to zoom but I remembered that I was on 10 yr old rollers, so I backed down..... a little over 15 mph on bare fee several years ago when a girlfriend's husband showed up early with a 12 ga. and some outdated ideas about fidelity. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1181338321.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1181338352.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1181338381.jpg |

Fastest as a passenger: 4 up in one of Dad's hottie 2.8s and it was wet....an indicated 280kph (around 175mph)...at about 260k it started to get a little "flighty".
BUT fastest in a 356 is best! Again one of dad's hotties - a 1720cc stroker on little Zenith carbies in his T6 B Coupe slipstreaming behind another of his 911 hotties (2.2S - bad as hell car; we all miss her). BOTH needles round to the stoppers and bouncing off them. I could hear the engine start to valve bounce...turned to Dad and yelled "maybe you should back off a little?" "Nope - she's not gonna blow and I can see the whites of Rex's eyes in the rear view mirror - he can't believe what he's seeing behind him!". Well Rex was doing a true 150mph according to the gearing in the S...he had to pull over 155mph to get away from us. Man I had a GREAT childhood :p ! That little B was known as the 911 eater...what a car. Fastest I've driven - I wound one of our 2.4E's (a little worked over) out to redline in 5th one day. It had a reasonably tall 5th from memory so maybe around 140-145mph. Dunno - was too busy checking the road ahead and all the other gauges to notice much! This was all a long time ago - statute of limitations has long run out so I am safe posting ;) . Fastest in Bertha VAN - the family car. I'm not telling but it's quick; much quicker than anyone would imagine! The Abarth? It doesn't have a 300kph speedo for looks alone... |
I can tell you a Subaru Outback has an inbuilt speed limiter which I have hit a few times recently on outback dirt roads.

Riding with a friend in his big block Camaro in 1970. Interstate 44 between Springfield and Joplin Mo. The car either had 2.73 or 3.08 gears(?) too long ago?
The speedometer measured from 0 to 120 (no stop pin at end) below that were the turn signal indicators. I watched the needle go past 120, past the turn signal indicators, and back up to 15 MPH!! At that the point the car was so light it was drifting lazily across both lanes west bound. He let off!! I dont know what the correction factor would be after 120? |
