motorcycle safety

Motorcycle topics seem to do well here in the ot.
I stumbled onto this site that promotes safety gear through crash survivors and their gear. There are some hard scuffs to say the least!

http://www.motorcyclesafetyusa.com/pages/1/index.htm

BTW How is Jeff doing with that Duc?

I don't want to look at a bunch of gory photos, but it made me think of something else I have been meaning to ask....

Is there a good "starting-to-learn-to-ride-a-motorcycle" BBS out there? I am takinng a class this fall to get my motorcycle licence, but I'm looking for a non-marque specific site that tells about the hazards of riding in traffic and how to deal with other various things.

Try David Hough's "Proficient Motorcycling", one of the better books on surviving real world riding. I've never heard of any BBS's tailored to beginning riders, but that's not to say they are not out there. The AMA also has some good material; you might as well join them and get their monthly publication. Good luck, and be careful out there.

I always tell my newbies to pretend that there is a bounty on every dead biker that is turned in, and that it was headlines on the morning news.

When the lady takes a break from her eye makeup to answer the phone, and then looks at you, smiles, turns on the signal and then comes over on you it's not a surprise.

I always get a laugh when I tell newbies that the safest place (besides the garage) on a bike in SoCal is on the freeway, they always laugh. Everyone is (usually) going the same direction, no side road access, relatively similar speeds, and good pavement conditions for the most part. Makes commuting here a blast.

YMMV.

I think it's a good thing to see some scuffed up skin and bikes. In Illinois it seems that a tank top, shorts, sneakers and some cool shades are considered standard riding gear for the crotch rocket and harley riding crowd. I do see a subset of sport riders who do dress the part, so it's not a blanket statement.
I wonder if their luck will hold? I would not want to trip and fall walking across a parking lot with that for protection.

My newest gear addition, I have to give it 2 thumbs up!

Jeff, got sliders on that DUC yet?

Dave....what are you riding?

I just got some Alpine Star boots that'll make me feel like a Rossi. I got a pair of the Joe Rocket Stage 1 pants too....not MotoGP protection, but good and light....not as hot as leather...

Now I just need a helmet and jacket to match the Duc...my green Ninja helmet and jacket are too green

Why the heck don't this thread get turned into how to be safe! I'll post some later....got to go to dinner...my B-day!..hence the new gear

almost

Hey Souk, this one is almost back to life. A 87-95 gixer of a sort Lots of one off machined goodies.

This project began with falling off, so it is related to the topic. LOL

My daily ride is a 85 BMW K100s w about 80Kon it. It's just starting to get broken in. Rode the dragon in full rain gear and still had a great time!

Here at the Tree of Shame in the wet. Happy not to be a contributor on that day.

David, no sliders on the Duc yet. MSF instructor recommended against it, saying it's better to screw up the fairing than having the slider catapult the bike up in the air and landing on the rider. What do you think? I'm kinda wary about putting a hole saw to the fairing...

This was recommended in the June issue of Sport Rider.

Jeff If you knew how you were going to fall it would make this easier
I "think" most street sport riding mishaps are either running wide or low siding. If you come off the low side, you are behind the bike. Your body has much more friction than the plastic and aluminium on the bike. Once you stop sliding , chances are you can stand up and watch your bike going away without you. You may even begin to mentally total up the $ before it stops. If it hits some thing hard, this does not apply but the $ number is probably bigger too. LOL

I would go with the sliders and put some aftermarket skin on it. Save the pretty (and expensive) OEM stuff for resale

have fun twisting it!
