If you read my follow up post, you might feel a little better.

I hereby take back everything I said in my original post. I further submit that the 914 is an awesome sports car, worthy of the highest respect, and quite cute if it still has paint on it. Driven properly, it will wax any other car on the track. Howzat?

Re: The Porsche Wave-Ten Simple Rules

I recently purchased a '99 996 (gasp) with a (double gasp) Tiptronic as a daily driver (you can't beat the water cooled if you have a six minute commute). Much to my dismay I found that my air cooled bretheren no longer grace me with "the wave." Now in Chicago Porsches are rarer than zits on Angelena Jolie's ass (I would think anyway) , so the wave is hardly aerobic activity, unlike sunny Southern California where the greatest hazard of Porsche ownership is tennis elbow or wrist tendonitis. This has precipitated many hours of thought resulting in a solution to Fermat's Theorem and ten simple rules to live by.

So what are the rules of "the wave?" I thought it appropriate to codify the basics so we all know where we stand.

1- '79-98 911's get an enthusiastic wave
2- '74-78 911's get a wave of sympathy
3- Boxsters get a wave only if they wave first
4- Cayenne owners get a hostile stare or middle finger
5- '99-05 911's - see Boxster
6- Pre '73 911's get a wave and salute
7- 356's- see pre '73
8- 914's get a nod
9- 924, 928,944,968 get eye contact
10- "special" Porsches (anything not covered previously)
Use your best judgement.

A special note about women in Porsche's: It is probably their boyfriend's, or they are a dyke, or they are stuck up and won't wave back anyway, or they will think you are hitting on them and reject you (unless you look like Lorenzo Llamas or other movie star), so NEVER wave to a woman in a Porsche unless she is your sister, mom, coworker, concubine, paramour, or neighbor.

These are meant to be a few simple rules- not the Ten Commandments. Be careful out there!
you folks do live in a dream world don't you.

With all that said, I bring you the t-shirt. For sizing reference, I am 5' 9"---5' 10" with afro. I weigh 150. Not sure why that's relevant, I just don't want any unhappy customers. Ooops, too late...The shirt I'm wearing is a Medium. It feels a bit snug on me, especially since everything "pre-shrunk" that I've owned has always shrunk some more after washing. I'll be wearing a Large.
They're 10 dollars, shipping included in that cost. I don't make a dime on these, just to let the Porsche brotherhood know...
If you are planning to use it as an oil rag or wipe your A$$ with it, the shirts are five dollars, plus shipping, only available in small, to match the 911 winkie.

Please cease and desist....

All,

For those of you with short memories, the Porsche crest is copyrighted by Dr. Ing. h.c. F Porsche AG and its affilliate, Porsche Cars North America.

It is unlawful to sell anything with the Porsche crest without express permission of PCNA.

Offering such items for sale on this forum places Pelican Parts at risk for encouraging copyright infringement.

Cease and desist all talk of selling anything of the sort in public forums.

AFJuvat,

You're kinda flying off the handle aren't you? After 10 pages you're giving a cease and desist?

ianc,

You are correct, I am not a moderator on the 911 BBS. I am however, a Pelican user who enjoys this BBS, and a 911 owner. Therefore, I have every right to post on this BBS.

**Edit after user edited his post**

For the first 10 pages, there was no problem. The minute he posted the T-shirts for sale with a Porsche crest on the BBS, it became copyright infringement and put this BBS at risk.

Wow...I just clicked on this thread after ignoring it for days. Personally, I wave at any 911/914/928/968/993 I see. All the others, I ignore. They're either driven by the clueless, the ornery, or rap stars who are packing heat. Your mileage may vary.

The Porsche Lawyers’ Wave

Putting a Porsche logo on your web site—gets a polite letter from the law firm requesting its removal

Making hundreds of copies of PET and selling them on Ebay—gets a frothy letter demanding that Ebay ban you.

Naming your startup car magazine “Porsche”—gets 35 junior partners in Hugo Boss suits jumping up and down outside your office.

Printing the Porsche logo on something and selling it—gets you greased up with Lubro Moly and violated with a genuine Carrera GT piston by Frau Helga, the managing partner’s secretary.

AFJuvat,

Yeah, I see now that you watch over the 964 board and hence the edit. However, there have been at least a couple of checkins here by other Pelican employees, but nobody else has pulled the trigger yet. Since there has been talk of T-Shirts since the start, I figure Wayne would have stopped in long ago to put the hammer down if he really cared...

Someone else advised the poster earlier in the thread that the crest was a bozo no no...

Not sure but there was a guy that got a letter after he showed a Porsche tattoo....

I'm OK, your OK - forgotten shrink?

Imagine if you read everyday about how your 83 SC sucked or that your 993 was a POS and wasn't worthy of being a Porsche. After a while, it would be funny one day and not so funny the next depending on your mood.

I flash at all Porsches and think to myself it's their problem if they don't "get it". Maybe I just want them to drive down the road and think.."Why was that guy flashing his lights at me? Is their a cop over the next hill? Or perhaps it's like a wink where maybe I know something they don't (vague Burt Lancaster quote - Field of Dreams).

Much ado about nothing.

Glenn,
You have a PM - PLEASE RESPOND AS SOON AS POSSABLE!

As for the logo - maybe someone can spoof one? It has to have less than 60% identifiable pattern recognition in order not to infringe trademark and logo rights - I am sure one of more creative fellas could have a bit-o-fun with it...

I doubt that the infringement comments have been made by anyone with a law degree, so I wouldn't worry. IP is a whole nuther area, and anyone who really truly knows IP rules and regs wouldn't be wasting their time putting in a "warning" on a BBS like this. And if you don't know what IP stands for, get off the issue.

Christian: You've got an Afro???? Missed that. I'll take my shirt in a Large, to match my penis size, Kermit's speed around the AX course, and the size of my mortgage.

I think the shirt's great. Thanks for including my edits. Hopefully see you at Potter's this weekend.

Well, after reading most of the 12 pages of nonsense, I can see that Porsche snobbery is alive and well.

Funny thing is, most of the folks coming up with their "who not to wave to" lists are the ones that claim those who own non-air-cooled 911's are immature and childish. Pot, meet kettle.

People who advocate this type of stupidity, whether in jest or not, give Porsche owners a bad reputation. Too bad there isn't a test to ensure that a Porsche owner is simply a Porsche enthusiast prior to said owner purchasing a Porsche.

Here's a graduitous shot of my WATER COOLED, FRONT ENGINED 944S2 to pollute the waters here:

I never passed a 911 I didn't like. I believe all three cars that are behind me are of the air-cooled variety.

Come on Z, tell the truth, you were the pace car. Within 8 seconds your windshield had bits of rubber on it and you could barely choke out a cuss word due to the smoked tires...

Nice to see the snobbery is alive and well. Better than ranting about the war and so forth...
