Easy there, Capri. You're falling right into the "my car is faster and better" trap that you accuse so many 911 owners of. The last two posts you've made have gone down that road.

Most of us love ALL Porsches. I know I do. However, to imply that it is somehow wrong to have a favorite is unrealistic. We can all love Porsches in general but have definite favorites. You love the 944 and I love the 911. So what?

You and I can argue all day about horsepower, power to weight ratios, front engine vs. mid engine vs. rear engine, water vs. air, but does it really matter? NO. We all love our own particular models and should respect the opinions of others.

With that said, My Carrera is better than your 944...

Just kidding.

I'm 17, but it seems I'm more mature than some people here.

All our cars can be boiled down to a common description: durable, purpose-built automobiles with sporting qualities and little quirks. That's it. My 944 with a cloth interior and next to no options; or your 996 with all the toys...they both fit the definition.

I'm ashamed to see 911 owners talking down, and 914/44 owners challenging 911s back. Meanwhile, those universally-derided "redneck" Vette owners actually relax, celebrate the cars, DON'T bait each other with seemingly joking statements, and seem to get along.

If you think your car's something special and you actually need to go prove yourself, listen to Teddy Roosevelt: "Speak softly and carry a big stick." Amazing to see such wise words ignored.

Older Water coolers,
The 928 is a true Porsche. And the 924 evolution was a good idea by Porsche again. However, from my experience these are the guys who lust after the water-cooled 911s. Usually have no idea what Porsche means, just want the prestige, yet have no money for a 996/Boxster. It is a shame that it is that way. 914 owners have to be more hardcore than these guys so they normally know the history.
As the owner of a 'teener and a 951 currently:

On the 'teener: Fun little go-cart. Especially with a lightly hopped-up engine (still BOSCH D-Jet EFI) and a '78 911 front suspension. Turn-in is instantaneous and the steering is so wonderfully communicative that it feels like holding a tie rod in each hand. I have never been able to get the car to do anything truly "dangerous". It's a great little sportscar, like an MG or a Triumph except that the electronics work, it's weathertight, and the chassis design doesn't date back to horse-and-buggy days. Ugly? Depends. Most people think so and that's fine. For some reason I've always liked 'em though, and besides, I drive it because it always leaves a smile on my face with its minimalism.

On the 951: If it's not a Porsche, then it's the best damn Audi ever built. It doesn't look original since the shape was copied by almost every late 70's and 80's sportscar (blatantly so in the case of the RX-7) but again, who cares? The driving feeling cannot be imitated, turn-in isn't as fast as the 'teener with all the weight at the ends of the car, but the balance is perfect and it can be coaxed into just enough oversteer. As for lusting after a water-cooled 911, no thanks. The 951 borders on too civilised as it is. The holy grail for me would be the Ruf "Yellow Bird" (1987 Ruf CTR), but a nice 1993 Turbo 3.6 (last of the RWD 911 Turbos) would be fun too. The purist in me can't help but know that I'd end up bypassing both for a 930 Turbo though. It just has more soul.

Wave to me or don't, I'm enjoying myself driving.

When driving my 74 911 Targa, I don't need a sympathy wave. Chances are if you are in an early SC, I'll be going by you.

How about a hey there wave for all air cooled 911's.

Here in Norcal, Boxes are driven by chicks who are totally clueless.

I'll have to tell you that most 996 drivers don't even look over when I wave.

very refreshing comments to hear from your generation..kudos to you. i wouldn't be too discouraged from what you've read. the very vast majority of this talk is all tongue in cheek and all but the singly most immature of us get along very, very well, have fun and share our car passion. it's all too easy for us to sometimes misconstrue one another soley on the basis of written word when we can't see the person we're addressing standing in front of us, but we're all a really great group..99 out of 100 of us would pull over and immediately offer a hand to another member with a sick car, no matter what model. stick around..some of us get carried away from time to time, but we're just people and that's what we do. anyway, it's very nice to have a level-headed young man around to help keep us adults in line too from time to time..we all still have lots of 'kid' in us too..

So I just started from the beginning of this thread and read through them all. Try it. Start from the beginning, and read through them. Glenn's original post is FULL of humor, some comments were self effacing. The next few posts were in agreement with Glenn, all taking the original post at its face value: Humor. Then, notice when the thread turns sour. All of a sudden, BANG. It turns in to a clusterf#ck of egos. This post has two points, in conclusion:
#1: Don't take yourself too seriously. That'll be the death of ya.
#2: The shirts are now available with the list upside-down. That way, when you're driving and come across another P-car, you can just look down and read the correct salutation immediately, therefore avoiding the embarrassing misfortune of, for instance, saluting a Cayenne.

Thanks. Of course I'm gonna stay. I have relatives with 996s and 944s, and I've never met a Porsche owner I didn't like. I just don't appreciate even hearing some of this. I'd also like to politely point out that I love the late '60s 911s, and I'd like one in black when I'm settled down...not all watercooler guys want the name or a newer model.

So yeah, my car's heritage is open to question, and it's a dog in a straight line, but it's still a lot more fun than a Camry...and that keeps me coming back for more. No true enthusiast could argue with that.

You guys {at least some} dont get it ! My first porsche was a 1963 356 super 90. I remember when the new model 1965 911 wasnt considered a "real" Porsche by some. Then after a few years some didnt think the 356 was a real Porsche. I've had 356s 914s 911s 912s 924s 924Ss 944 and I've loved all of them. Each has had it's strong points. Each has had some weak points. Each could only preform as good as my driving skill. Much thanks to the Yellow C-GT as he flicked his lights as we past ,me in my 1987 924S. Some people DO get it!

The only thing to 'get' in this entire thread was that Glen was just having a laugh- partly at his own expense- and pulling fun at obvious cliches.

It was soooooooo not about which Porsche is better than any other. I can't believe anyone feels the need to defend their car.

My other half laughed out loud when I read her the bit about women & Porsches. Lighten up everyone. It's supposed to be fun.
