How about a Workout / Exercise thread?

Anyone here into lifting weights or doing any sort of exercise program?

My wife and I have changed our eating habit (I have also changed my drinking habit) since the beginning of the year. I went from 225 pound to 185 pound (6'3") and I have been eating more food than ever before, just better stuff.

She has also lots @ 30 pounds and is loving it.

Now I am trying to put weight back on by working out and have been pretty successful. I am now working out with weights, in my basement @ 1 hour per day, 4 days in a row (doing different exercises for different muscles each day) and on the 5th day I jog. 3.5 miles.

So far I have put back on @ 10 pounds of muscle and feel and look great. (At least my wife says so)

Just wondering if anyone here was trying to get in shape etc., since all of my friends around here seem to be lazy and overweight (and they admit it to) I do not have anyone to chat with about this stuff.

Erik

Im 41 and I work out at the gym for 2 hours 3 days a week and started just 2 months ago. Im doing it to keep in shape and love it. I have gained about 10 pounds since I started so it must be muscle building. I dont watch my weight normally but thought I would keep and eye on it since I joined the gym. I dont normally fluctuate much in weight but this caught me by surprise. I thought that I would probably lose a few instead I gained. I talked to a nurse at the gym and she said its normal.

I also eat alot better like your doing. Lots of steak, chicken and vegetables.

I feel so much better now not that I was out of shape much but this is different then my normal excercise {swimming, hunting, hiking, canoeing, biking, mowing the grass, working on my house, land} and I keep adding to my program.

My wife and I have a Bowflex (I've owned a Bowflex for almost 6 years now) and also an elliptical trainer. My wife is hardcore (Bowflex, aerobics, abs every day). I have essentially exercised since I was in 8th grade (40 now). I have broken it up into focusing on certain muscle groups and essentially do *something* every day.

We recently bought one of those Tanita Ironman scales that gives you weight/body fat/muscle mass/basal metabolic rate/etc. Really fun.

I'm 6'3" and about 216 right now. Trying to get my body fat % below 20% (too much beer drinking).. :>)

I think either you love exercising or you don't. I happen to really enjoy it.

Good thread!

Mike

Erik - 185lbs!?!?! Man, that's great. I don't see any way I'll ever see south of 200 again. I seem to feel best around 210, though. At 210, my body fat percentage is probably around 15%-16%, though, so I can live with that.

Man you guys are in shape for some old guys. I am 17 and I weigh 170 at 6'1". My body won't let me loose any more body weight. I run about 1.5-2.5 miles a day in full pads in ninety degree weather. I lift weights after pratices on mon-wend-frid doing upper-lower-upper. Throw in some abs in there during the lifting and sprints before and after you run. Do this for 4 months and you will be in the best shape of your life. Then eat all the unhealthy stuff and get nice and fat and do it all over again!

You have a finite number of heartbeats so don't use 'em all up too soon. Gotta pace yourself.

Yeah, the whole eating better idea has really made a big difference. I lost the weight by eating this (or a form of this) pretty much every day.
Breakfast: Total Cereal and skim milk, low sugar or diet juice and Mulit-Vitamin.

Morning Snack: some fruit / vegetable @ 10:00 am.

Lunch: Can of Tuna fish with chopped up vegetables.

Afternoon Snack: More fruit and vegetables.

Diner: Something different each night, mostly chicken, shrimp, fish, portobello mushrooms, etc. Large salad, some rice or noodles.

Also would eat some carrot or celery before bed.

Drink lots of water.

It was easy to loose weight that way. Now that I am trying to build muscle mass, I am eating about 3-4 times that amount per day. It is actually hard to get enough calories of a good kind without excess fat. That is where the nutrition companies help out.

When I was 225 my 36" pants were tight, now I am back into 32" pants (of course I gave away all of my older 32" pants and have to buy new ones) My goal is to get to a fit and muscular @210.

Now that I have a good gym setup in my basement an have started doing heavy squats and dead-lifts every 5 days, I should be putting on some decent mass. We will see.

If you remember the looney bald girl that used to yell on TV about eating Susan Powder? I think she was on to something, her deal was eat small amounts all day long, keep you metabolism up and you will feel better, be more active, burn more calories which will burn fat and equal weight loss.

White,

What about the post-dinner wine, the mid-evening wine, and the just-before-bed wine along with the 10:00 p.m. bowl (or two) of cereal? I don't see those listed. Also, I have a tough time cutting back on dugar.

Start your day with a beautiful cup of strong black coffee. Finish it with a nice bowl of ice cream.

The crap that happens between those two beautiful events are just details.

stop the insanity?

i pulled up some old polaroids where i went from 221 to 183. felt great, but i had to give up way too much. eating only hardboiled eggwhites with a piece of whole wheat pita bread...to this day, i can barely eat cottage cheese. i mean it really worked, and i could jog multi miles, easy. i started dumb-bell presses with 15 pounders. i was weak, heavy, and depressed.

then i started dating a girl that lived life. happy as hell. some of you have met her, and you know what i mean. many insist i get off my a$$ and marry her. nevertheless, you know the dating process. i put back some weight, but i am very healthy. just 10 days ago, i stuck the polaroids up on the fridge, and i have been working out, and eating good again, not fanatical, just good. i like to think that my body reached "equilibrium". anyways, too much is too much. i can still push 85 lb dumbells (12 reps), and can jogg 3 miles easy, and i eat normal. 5-6 smaller meals a day. too much sacrifice is not living. i work out 6 days a week. 3 with weights, 3 with cardio. sunday is free day. zero tolerance for fast food. no micky D (well maybe twice a year)! just trying to set up a routine that i can take to the grave. eggs are sometimes better with yolks

I'm on the NeoCon excercise plan: jumping to conclusions & dodging responsibility

But seriously, I play 1.5 hours of basketball 2x a week, but mostly I try to watch what I eat. I've lost almost 20lbs in the past 3 months. I can get in the 911 without removing the steering wheel now; a few more months of this and I will no longer have to remove the roof to get in.

Sounds like you already work out at work. The bottom line is calories in / calories out.

My wife has been on a kick recently, and I am thinking about getting a trainer to get me started.

My problem is my travel, and eating healthy.

How do you go about finding a good trainer?

When i am in Tokyo (i spend 1/3 of my time there), i walk to the train station from my hotel and the station to my office (30+ min total) daily. For lunch, i walk about 10 mins each way to the food joint. Figure another 20 mins of walking around to do other daily stuff, so 1 hr walking min/day of walikng.

Food there is also served in smaller portions and usually more balanced. There are very very very few overweight people there. Most do not have an exercise program but have to walk twice as much as i do daily if they live in the suburbs.

When i am in the US, i park my car 20 paces from my office, drive everywhere i need to go and eat larger portions than i should because i hate wasting food...curiously, i gain weight locally and loose it internationally on a monthly basis.

I've worked out semi-regularly since I was a teen. Usually just a few minutes a day on weekdays with weights. This was just to keep enough meat on me so I could go outside on windy days. Now that I'm approaching 40 it's becoming necessary to keep from looking pregnant. My wife's lucky enough to have the same metabolism. The problem is, she's a few years older than me and getting to where she needs to work out more and watch what she eats. So how do you pass that along without getting cutoff.
