How do you get a concealed weapon permit in LA County?

How does one get one? I thought that would be an easy internet search - wasn't so easy.

My guess was through the LA County Sheriff's office, but I couldn't find anything on their website.

Also, if you live in one county and work in another, but the permit would be based on your work, I assume you go through the county of your work, not residence.

Any info?

Thanks!

In Orange County they are issued by the Sheriff so I imagine it would be the same in Los Angeles. In O.C. the only way to get one is the either be in law enforcement somehow, or to make a donation to the relection campaign of the Sheriff. The same may or may not work in L.A.

I guess I'd have to move to Modoc County to get one!

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2004/09/05/BAG1G8IU6E1.DTL

Here's another question: Do you NEED to have a CCW to carry a concealed gun on you in your place of business? For ex., say you own and work in a retail store, could you carry the gun on you while you are at work?

For ex., you occasionally see on "Wildest Videos" etc. videotape where some guy holds up a convenience store/gas station, and the guy behind the counter pulls out a gun and trys to cap the robber. Does the store owner in that instance have to have a CCW?

+1 on the 'good luck' sentiment.

Kalifornia, and the sheriff get to decide who needs to protect themselves.

I love being here in Texas. Our CHL (concealed handgun license) is a 'shall issue'.. meaning that if you meet the requirements, they HAVE to give it to you. No one individual controls who does or does not get approved.

And for your last question, carrying a gun in your place of residence or business, that would depend on your local penal code. It can vary. 'round here, it's perfectly legal to carry a gun without a permit on your own property, or at your place of employment (provided your employer allows it).

Ditto on the good luck

A sneaky way may be to join the local sheriffs auxiliary or booster club or whatever they call it volunteer program.

Here in Arizona its legal to carry one in the open on your hip in most places. As long as its not hidden not a problem.

Yeah Joe, it's kinda odd that Texas doesn't have open carry. When people think of the wild west, they think of Texas first... hehehe

Good Luck. Nearly impossible to get a CWP in L.A. unless you can show really good poof as to why you need one or you are a police officer.

HAHAHA!

Last I heard there were......12......CCW permits in all of LA County (held by private non LEO residents.) There are somewhere around 10 million people in the County. You do the math.

A 7-figure donation to the Sheriff Boosters might do the trick, or marrying the Sheriff's daughter, can't think of much else.

From what I learned in my minimal research, just to begin the application process you will have to answer questions like (1) "Describe the last time your life was directly threatened? Police Report #_____" (2) "Why do you believe this is likely to happen to you again?" (3) "Why do you believe the local law enforcement agency is not able to adequately protect you from this threat? "

The best plan if serious is to move to Orange, Kern or Ventura counties! All of them seem much more progressive/rational.

Last I checked, you do not need a carry (or hunting) permit to carry a weapon on private property under your control, such as your home or business, or I think also where you have explicit permission i.e. a friend's or relative's place, etc.

However one of the "traps" is that the gun(s) and ammo have to be in separate locked containers while being transported across public property, such as in your car or even walking into a building from your car parked on the street. I'm not sure what the penalty is, but odds are good you do NOT want to be caught with a loaded weapon in your car in LA without a carry permit.

I am on the road but at home I have the links to the CA DOJ web site where the full legal code is posted. It is pretty interesting reading; a quick search might turn up the link.
