I feel pretty lucky. We've got a couple decent rock stations, a good alternative rock stations and two - three classic rock stations that I bounce between.

I'm tired of hearing "Fly Like An Eagle" by Stever Miller.

JackFM here in LA is pretty 80's oriented. And it doesn't bode well for "radio personalities." That being said, programmed automated radio has been around for quite some time, and funny thing, it turns out that people like to listen to people from time to time. And no, the canned stuff isn't the same. |

We still have WRIF In Detroit. Although I mostly listen to NPR anymore, I still crank out WRIF when I can get it to come in. Drew and Mike Rock!!!! Did many "RIF" shows when we were playing the Detroit club scene back in the 80's.
For the record, I can't stand Arthur P.. Time to retire, dude.

Jack FM here in NY used to be an oldies station 50' 60 70's, when they changed formats this past summer there was a HUGE backlash against it.
Even threats to the station. People were pissed, they had a tremendous loyal following. KRock , here which has Howard Stern in the am is going to all talk In Jan, with David Lee Roth takin over Sterns spot. I tend to listen to classic rock the most, that why i'm pissed about the format change. Where a live in NJ there is a Classic rock station close by but it has limited reception area. Granted I mostly listen to Cd's at home and in the car. I work in NYC which is a 45min commute for me. So i like a good choice on the radio, which has become very limited. Besides the fact that there are commercials every 2 mins. I'd say the two best cities ive been in as far as the best radio stations have to be Seattle and Cleveland.

Seattle radio = no good. KISW is a total loss. It's either burned out late 70's rock or worse, NuMetal - might as well be R&B as far as I'm concerned. The rest of the stations is "lite" pop. Ashlee Simpson, Jlo and $hit like that. Rap, Teckno, and R&B= noise.
I miss Zrock. rj

OK, here's my take.
When in HS and college, the Classic Rock stations all played the standbys: Stones, Who, Zep, Floyd, but there were bands that were still recording that got airplay: Van Halen, Bon Jovi and all the hair bands, Guns and Roses, Aerosmith, The Cars, Talking Heads, Dire Straits, Black Crows... There was diversity because there were new albums that were integrated into that format. Classic Rock stations don't play any new music. They used to, but not any more, at least not around here. Rock on the radio is dead. When stations start playing/promoting local and indie bands again, that might breath some life back into it.

Have to agree with scottmandue.
The best radio out there that I listen to is NPR and college stations. The ones here in SoCal are kind of boring though - there used to be a really great one out of Naperville, Illinois that I LOVED when I lived there (think it was for North Central College) - I miss that station. Most of the stuff on the air is WAY over-commercialized now and not really worth my time to listen to (hence why I listen to and sponsor NPR, or just listen to stuff I record). *sigh* Radio and rock&roll is pretty much dead. And I refuse to pay for radio in much the same way I refused to pay for TV until about a year ago when I finally sucked it up and got the dish - but that's only because the "over the air" programming in LA sucks and it's virutally all in Spanish.

KLOS has sucked for years. I remember when KMET was still around. That was great.
KROQ throughout the 80's was great too. especially Rodney. Nowadays, KROQ is nothing but that god awful nasal emo **** that all sounds the same. Indie 103 is REALLY good Jack FM is eh... for every good song, they play some cheese. Least its better than Arrow, which it replaced. I honestly cant see why ANYONE ever liked Styx or B.T.O. |

When I am at home I listen to 102.5 WDVE form Pittsburgh on the internet. I use to live in PIT and now I live in Norcal and I haven't found any radio station anywhere as good as WDVE. Try them on the internet.

Forget the radio. It's amazing to me what is available on CD these days. I used to cruise the used record stores looking for the good stuff. Much of it has been re-released on CD. I never listen to the radio anymore.
Just to give you guys a glimmer of hope for the future of civilization as we know it, I offer this. My oldest son just graduated high school and started at the UW. We sent him away to high school; a private school in Wisconsin. This is a Lutheran school, mind you. Kids living in dorm rooms. When I went back there to hunt with him and his dorm supervisor last year I walked into a typical boys' dorm. Doors were open; music was blaring. And what did my tired ears but hear? Jimi. Zeppelin. Floyd. No rap, no hip-hop. Hid dorm supervisor told me that's all the kids listen to - "ain't it great?" Rock'n'roll is making a comeback in my kids' generation. It has the staying power some of the newer stuff cannot match. "Hey hey, my my, rock and roll will never die..."

Well, it's not that rap, NuMetal or pop these days is intimidating or hazardous (it would be cool if it was)- it's just dumb, textbook and unoriginal.
Is this what my generation has to contribute to social anarchy? Sad. rjp (still Gen X, by default. )

Radio has pretty much always sucked, IMHO. That is being said by someone who has never had much interest in mainstream rock; Stones, Beatles and Zep included. (Flame suit on) Sure, those bands are all talented and write amazing pop songs, but crap, I got tired of that stuff years ago. Same goes for new bands that are overplayed.
That being said, I remember KNAC out of Long Beach being pretty decent, before they went metal in the 80's. KROQ also had some decent shows, most notably Rodney, late nights on the weekends. These days, it seems like the only radio stations willing to take a chance on different types of music are college stations or community supported stations. If I want to hear decent rock and roll, I go to the local club and check out what's going on there, or, I go to band practice. Right now I'm listening to sports talk. Not too exciting, but not offensive, either. And no Ashley Simpson. |
