Which AK?

LIke many, I want what I cannot have. In short time I will be free from the CA law banning the purchase of a AK rifle. In Florida I can walk in and buy one outright. So the question is, which AK or AK replica? Any pointers on what qualities I should be looking for?

I am no gunophile, but curious.

Are you talking about AK as in Automatic Karbin. When I did my service in the Swedish Army we had the old type 4 and the newer type 5. The latter I believe is a high velocity rifle with light weight ammunition.

If thats what you are talking about - what would anybody use such a horrendous weapon for in civilian life ?

pbs, are you a Communist? Be a patriot, get a AR-15.

(Just kidding.)

livi, I don't own an AK or AR but I suspect most of the privately-owned ones are simply shot for fun - firing at targets on the range, shooting cans in the desert, etc. Kind of like what most firearms are used for. I'd like to have a nice AR, but can't in California and have other things to spend $1,000 on.

I have a Norinco MAK90, a semi-auto Chinese copy.

Mine has a different stock from the photo, but you get the idea

If you are willing to spend some $$$, I would recommend a VEPR.

Easily the best AK available in the US

What are the implications of a short stock or short barrel AK?

kachi22 - short beyond legal short? Bad things, unless its properly registered/taxed/etc. then it is a legal short-barrel rifle.

As to the best AK, skip it and get a SKS. "New" Yugos are availabel for a couple hundred bucks...

I do not know how short legal short is, and why I would ever want a gun difficult to use in urban areas (home defense).

How about assault pistols?

Are they as poor as this article says they are?

The Intratec TEC DC-9 "assault pistol", also known as DC-9, TEC-9, or, if manufactured after 1994, as AB-10, bears the dubious distinction of being one of the most widely used "criminal" guns in USA. It was used in several mass murder cases, as well as in unknown, but definitely large number of street fights and other violent crimes. TEC-9 became "famous" for its "evil" appearance, large magazine capacity (which offered significant firepower), and for low price. Unsurprisingly, these features made TEC-9 very popular among various marginal types. For any serious or professional shooter this gun vas of little value - it was too big and heavy to be carried comfortably, it was too unreliable when firing anything but FMJ ammunition, and the accuracy with very crude fixed sights was about marginal.

Yeah, that Bush guy is really getting out of hand, I may be arming myself soon too. My uncle has a few of these, some fully auto M16s, ARs, etc. Why does he have them? "For when the Russians invade Indiana". Duh!

Kach,

What is an 'assault pistol'?

I ask, because assault is a behavior, not a device. I really think 'Assault rifle' is a bit of a misnomer. I'd rather it be called a 'utility rifle'

As for legal barrel length, it is 16", measured from the end of the chamber. A few states do not allow "SBR" or Short Barrel Rifles, but many do. You have to register it with the ATF and pay a $200 tax BEFORE you purchase or cut down your barrel.

If you're interested in a small, light carbine for defensive/urban situations, check out the Beretta CX4 Storm. It fires 9mm from magazines that the Beretta 92 series pistols use. You can use 10 and 15 round standard mags, or 20+ round aftermarket mags. They're reputed to be very comfortable, easy to handle, very accurate, and light recoiling. 9mm ammunition is readily available just about everywhere that carries ammunition, and it's pretty cheap. (good defensive loads cost a bit more) You'll be able to practice with it a lot.

Beretta's Cx4 Storm redefines the pistol-caliber carbine, with racy and radical lines from the masters of industrial design at Giugiaro.
Cool, something sexy with a designer name for the architect.

I'm actually thinking about selling my AR15 and picking up a CX4. I dig my AR15, for sure (16" stainless barrel M4gery, A4 Rock River Arms upper with an Armalite detachable carry handle, Bushmaster complete lower with RRA 6 position collapsible stock, Hogue grip and CQB Solutions tactical sling), but I pretty much only use it for carbine matches. My sidearm being a 9mm CZ75, having both weapons using the same cartridge would be handy and since 9mm is cheap, it would cut costs. It can also serve as a good home defense weapon.

Yours weighs 5.8lbs? The CX4 about 4lbs? I guess that's only one aspect.

If you wait, there will always be a new gun in town to have. Looks like this is in the pipeline.

I think the Beretta should have been designed in a more "modular" manner. One reason the ARs are so popular is the endless ways to tinker and swap out parts - grip, stock, foregrip, sights, barrel, etc etc - and accessorize.

It seems like a nice plinking gun, light and compact with relatively cheap ammunition. No big hunting use that I can think of. For home defense - how is this better than a short-barrel auto-loading shotgun?

As you've probably already figured out, the "AK" is for the semi-automatic "AK-47" variants available here in the U.S.

As for "use" mine are mostly just for fun informal target shooting, but an AK-47 would be my weapon of choice if the citizens of this country ever had to revolt against the government.

Of course, the mere fact that I and other freedom-loving citizens own such weapons, in-and-of-itself helps to limit the actions of the power-hungry politicians. They know they can only violate our individual rights "so far" before they run the risk of "pi$$ing-off" enough people that there is a revolt. This "fear" by politicians is easy to see; those who follow a general anti-liberty agenda are usually working trying to disarm the population!
