There is no denying physics man - at 55 miles an hour a car will do less damage and take less energy to stop than at 70 or 80. In fact it's exponentally less. The situation of that 55 mph driver is made unsafe by hoards of people who disregard the law and break the speed limit (myself included). Just because he's the only one *NOT* breaking the law doesn't mean he's the one making the situation unsafe. Unless the law says so somewhere...

Now I do at times drive like an old man; and at time I floor the heck out of it but those times when I am over 85 mph are extremely few and far between.

Doing 100mph even on the highway during the day is just plain irresponsible. I know - I've done it, caused an accident and nearly gone to jail for it (when I was 18). The ONLY thing that saved me from it was luck - one of the CHP officers working the scene (60 miles from home) was one of my neighbors and knew that my dad would do a better job of punshing me than the law could.

Some of the above is correct but anyone who owns a 911 and says that they have not driven above 100 mph is either lying or is ready for the rest home.

We should also remember that many times the speed limits are imposed for reasons other than safety, like the fuel crunch in the '70's. Then if you sped you got a ticked for "wasting natural resources" and no points.

We then have Montana who for a long time had no speed limit on the highways. I drove over 100 on a highway there and was joined by a cop for a while, who then pushed it up and passed me. The speed limit was "safe and prudent" and up to the judgement of the cop. It has since been recinded because the Govt in DC refused to give Montana any Federal funds for the highway until they put a limit on the highways. Had nothing to do about safety, but as usual just money...

I have driven 8 hours at over 140 mph in my 911 on highways and it was safe, condoned and in fact we were even followed by the police for a while. After a while they just waved and pulled over and stopped.

It was driving home from the formula one race in Monte Carlo, when I lived in Germany. A group of 911's, couple of Ferarri's and one or two Lambo's headed North out of Monaco. Over 10 hours later we split up in Germany and headed to our homes. We averaged over 140 mph for the autobahn part of the trip and that was including one fuel stop.

Hope it worked out for you Mul. Those of us who have driven in SoCal know what its like and 80 is the average most of the time with it going faster (much faster at times) in various sections. You drive the speed limit and you are honked at for impeding traffic.

When I turned 14, my grandfather was the one that was responsible for driving me to town to get my driving permit. We lived in rural SoCal (yes, there was such a thing back then, and were allowed to get our licenses at that age in order to get to school), and on the way in, he gave me the two best driving tips that have stayed with me to this day.

-"Watch out for old men wearing hats." (He never did wear one himself.)

-"Watch out for anyone that has an insurance company sticker on the rear fender."

Especially if it is one for accident free driving. That sticker is usually the last thing seen leaving the scene of an occurring accident, oblivious to the carnage right behind them. They never appear in the accident report because they never saw or stopped. If asked, they will proudly say they have NEVER had an accident in 58 years of driving. My mother (no hat, but AAA Plus sticker on rear bumper) is a proud member of that group. None of us kids will drive with her.

Now that I have shared this, you will need to start watching those 55MPH'ers. They will be wearing hats, and have a AAA Plus sticker on the back bumper. They are so 'head-up-and-locked', they are usually not even aware that they just caused the accident right behind them.

Yes, the speeds in SoCal are high when the traffic is flowing, there is even a difference between the weekday commuters and the Sunday drivers. Weekday commute hours doing 80-85 doesn't scare me. Saturday morning doing 60 around minivans with 14 and 15 kids (normal here) scare the UnoWhat outta me. Usually driven by someone with a drivers license issued in Tijuana. No insurance sticker showing anywhere.

If you had ever been on any part of the 280 going up the peninsula, you'd have been run over doing 65 there.

I actually saw a CHP pull a car over for impeding traffic last week on the 210 in Los Angeles. He was doing 65 in the car pool lane. Had 40+ cars stacked up behind him. Bike officer waited until the "Slower Traffic Keep Right" sign went by, and then lit him up. People were jumping across the double yellow to get around this idiot, and the cop knew what the problem was. Speeds in the regular lanes was 80-85.

The horns honking as this guy went to the shoulder were for the cop getting this hazard off the freeway.

Sorry. You need to pay attention to the world around you. You know, the world that has to pass you on the right.

I used to make that drive 3 or 4 times a year (SF to Seattle) All my tickets were in Williams or Dunsmuir. Got arrested outside Ashland, but thats a whole 'nother story.

With the faded Kerry/Edwards sticker on the bumper, right next to the AAA and "Pemco Insured Safe Driver" stickers. And a mile long string of cars backing up behind, who all need to slow down just a bit and be like Steve. You're right Shaun - "it's good to be king".

Steve, I don't mean to single you out here except that you admit (with a flourish) that you do 65 in the car pool lane (reguardless.... reguardless of anything, apparently). Was the point of your retort.

I said there is a time and a place for everything. Yes, there are lots of accidents on I-5, a long straight stretch of road, and some of these accidents have contributory factors related to speed. But to generalize all speeders as criminals, and your plan to deal with them is to get in the left lanes and do the posted limit, you are the criminal now. That "Slower Traffic Keep Right" sign carries a lot of weight. If you read the reg attached to that sign there are no speeds mentioned. It says, if people have to pass you on the right, you are in violation of the Vehicle Code, and will be pulled over and cited if spotted. You are the cause of the accident if there is one.

Sorry. The cop on the bike has one job. Keep the traffic flowing. Write the offenders as he sees them. The fast ones, the slow ones, and the unsafe lane changers.

Past that, it's all donuts.
