Why is the center of the earth magma?

How does it get energy to stay hot? Its can't be free energy so I don't get it.

But what provides the gases? There is no induction of gases. So it only has a built up supply?

I've read that the magma along with the moon and the oceans helps to create a cycle of oxygen and rain fall replenishment.

Let's see...as the plates move heat is creratet within the mantle and below to the core. Gas is released from existing pockets, created by the chemechanical process and vented along with the liquid magma.

I thought it had to do with friction and pressure from gravity.

Just remember most of the earth is cover by the oceans, and most of the volcanic activity is on the oceans floor. Talk about being under pressure!

One geophysicist, J. Marvin Herndon, has proposed the heat is a byproduct of radioactive decay in the mantle or core. In other words, the core is a big fission reactor. I suppose this is possible as the heavier elements would have 'settled to the bottom' as the earth was in formation.

I read recently that the Earth's core is not rotating at the same rate as the Earth (don't remember if it is slower or faster). I thought that was interesting.
