Sounds like rats to me too. I had the same problem a couple years ago. Got a cat? Put it up in the attic for a few hours. The scent will drive the rats out for a few days...seal up the house before they come back. Once they are locked out they will be killed and eaten by other rats as they are very territorial. worked for me.

I used to live in a somewhat rundown old rental property. I have had squirrels in the attic, and mice in the walls. You know what you do? You corner them, you grab the little rodent, and you chuck them in the yard. Then patch the holes until next time.

Unless it's a squirrel. You eat them.
Possum, too, but you have to catch them live and feed them grain for about 2 weeks to get some of the gaminess out of them.

Mice... well, not so much. They're too small to make much of a meal. I guess you could skin a whole mess of them and then deep fry them like chicken wings. That might be good with a little Texas Pete.

OK, maybe it's a rat. I was talking with my neighbor last night, and he said they had rats a few years ago in the neighborhood. UGH

A few years ago one of my friends frantically calls me around 7 pm telling me they were eating dinner and a raccoon fell through the ceiling and landed on the table. Stunned it looked at them and then hissed and ran into the living room and was hiding under the sofa. After I stopped laughing I asked what I was supposed to do? Bring your guns and a trap was the answer. So I get to their house and there is a large adult raccoon hiding under the sofa who has very large claws and teeth--did I mention he is quite pissed by this time too?

My friend is poking him with a broom that the raccoon soon grabs and shreds. So they want me to shoot him--I don't think a 12 guage is going to work in the house, nor a 9mm at close range. We decide to trap him with tuna and peanut butter. Set the trap, dim the lights, and in an hour we have him. They tell me to take him out to the country and make sure I kill him--like he is going to walk 15 miles back to the house. I agree and off we go. Get out to the country were there is a nice lake with a stream and let him go.

It can definately be a squirrel. Thought we had a rat in our office--could hear the bastard scratching in the wall right behind my chair--set some traps in the basement crawlspace and ended up catching 2 squirrels.

No more scratching.

No, my room mate took care of it. I told him to just go throw it out in the road (it would look natural there), but nooo, he called animal control to come pick it up. He thought they might want to check it for rabies or something.

So I worked days and he worked nights (he heard the thing when he got home that night). He called it in while I was at work. Apparently a rather hot little officer showed up to retrieve the possum. Now imagine this... "it's right here, down in my bedroom..." He was still laughing when I got home after the look on her face made him realize how all of this was starting to look. He did get a date with her...

It's a rodent. Makes little difference. A squirrel is just a rat with a press agent. It's a toss-up which can do more damage.

I know the PETA people are going to kill me but...

I always kill any animals that get into my house. (I've had birds, rabbits, and mice.) Why? They've learned a way in. If I set them free, they may come back, and they may teach their young the same. I've had no "repeat" offenders. There are more than enough rabbits, mice, and birds in the neighborhood that I'm not driving them to extinction...

12Am update... trap still empty, haven't heard a thing since yesterday. Will cover the hole tomorrow, and move the trap inside just in case I seal him in.

I love old homes.

A few years ago I lived in a house up on a hill away from the city. I was laying in bed and my eyes were just about to close for the evening when I start to hear this faint scratching sound from inside the wall. My eyes opened wide and I looked around nervously. "Is that coming from inside my room?", I thought to myself as my eyes darted about the darkness.

I turned the light on and stocked around the room, adjusting my direction each time I heard the noise until I came to the wall on the far side of the bedroom. Something was in the wall. But what could it be? I knocked on the wall in front of where the noise was originating and heard whatever it was moving about. Seeing that there was no immediate danger I returned to my bed and went to sleep. The scratching noise continued for another five days before it went silent. Whatever it was must have found it's way out - so I thought.

A few weeks had past and I started to smell this mild but distinct smell. I couldn't put my finger on what it was but it was definately there. The smell grew stronger over the next several weeks, at which point I knew exactly what it was: the smell of decaying flesh. After several more weeks it began to go away but it was never completely gone. I moved out soon afterwards, but I heard that when they remodeled the house, they found the corpse of what they thought to be a racoon in the wall. The fluids had permeated and stained the sheetrock.

Rat. He was in the trap this morning. Wifey wouldn't ley me take a picture of the detainee, citing the Geneva convention.

The trap went into a big bucket of water. Being a softie, I made sure the water was warm. Goodbye, Mr. Rat.
