When I moved into my house last yr, every single person on the street came over and welcomed me to the block. All except the douchebag directly across from me. I'm out in my driveway every single day. Till this day he still hasnt even looked in my direction. Yesterday the kids two houses down from me tossed a rock at his house and dented his new siding. He was jumping up and down screaming at nobody that he didnt deserve that. and he was calling the cops. Me and my nieghbor just stood there laughing our asses off.

Be friendly and courteous to others, but don't be offended if they happen to be an O2 bunghole. I understand the arguments for privacy, but does one's privacy trump simple acknowledgement of other human beings. I've read CA is a place where it's perfectly normal not to know your neighbors. That is so backwards compared to The South. We might not have teeth, but we sure are friendly.

It's definitely not a cop thing though I don't care for most of them. I have a neighbor who behaved similarly towards me and most of the other neighbors on our little cul de sac. I saw her outside working on her garden a week after she moved in so I introduced myself and welcomed her to the neighborhood. It was if I was talking to myself. OK, she's private, quiet, shy, unfriendly, etc... All of that doesn't matter now because you only get one chance before I write you off. I hope she never needs any help.

Super quiet neighborhood here, and sane/polite neighbors...'been here for 22 yrs. . Neighbor and wife across the street sold and moved to France last Oct. New ones didn't move in for 2 months...had new windows put in, new roof, painting interior, etc. When they'd arrive, they had two MB SUVs, and some late model BMW. I thought, "...great, maybe some class", etc. They took 5 weeks to move in totally...in that 5 week period they stacked up empty boxes all along the house front - from walkway to the top of their overhang. What a sight! Now they've turned their tiny front yard, their driveway, and the street into their playground. Three children on noisy Hot Wheels, screaming and roaring up/down the playground, er, street. Huge empty school parking lot next door...WTF? When the parents come out of the house, they speak to ea. other as if one is in the Himalayas. Their noisy friends drop by and park randomly - some are parked halfway into the narrow street (we have no sidewalks). Just rude white trash. Seemingly no sense of the quiet beauty of this street/cul de sac. 'Couldn't tell you when I'll ever greet them. Maybe when my place is up for sale I'll ask them to keep the noise down to a low roar during open house.

We have cops in our neighborhood, firefighters, studio people, lawyers, teachers. Everyone is very open, always out walking, saying hello, waving, etc. The exception, of course, is the early retiree (50-60 yrs. old) across the street. This dude hates everyone, barely says hello, likes to walk around his yard half-dressed with his nasty gut hanging down to his balls, and makes it a point of letting us all know he has a Maserati Spyder. Welcome new neighbors to the neighborhood? Hell, this guy wouldn't welcome Jesus if he came back to Earth. Park your car in front of his house, and he turns the sprinklers on it, particularly if it's a warm day and you have your windows down. But the killer - get this - at one time, the house next door to ours burned down. So what's this guy do? After the fire was put out, in the dead of night, he went over, stole the bricks from the fallen chimney, and used them to build a wall around his front yard. What's worse is he likes to brag about doing this. It just goes to show: you can't pick your family or your neighbors.

It's not that I have a right to know, it's just that all of my neighbors are the original owners of their homes, meaning they bought them from the builder almost thirty years ago. We are legacy owners in that we bought our house from my mom-in-law, who was the original owner. My wife has known our neighbors since she was a little girl.

Give him a break. Let him get back to you. First impressions are often misinterpreted. I have had people tell me they thought I was a snob at first. Imagine that...

unless someone just 'shot his dog', that was pretty rude, imho. very strange. i've gone up and introduced myself to my neighbors, but they don't tend to be overly friendly here. i live in a multi-racial, middle-class neighborhood..nobody was ever rude, however, when i came up and introduced myself. we talked, exchange phone numbers if there were ever problems, that sort of thing..maybe we didn't have a 'group hug', but it was nothing like you describe..and one of mine was a policeman, too. ryan

Maybe he was just having a bad day. Wait untill the block party and see if he has come around by then. If you make another attempt prior, you may get labeled as a busybody. I have lived in my home for 6 years, and while I wave to neighbors and offer "hellos", I only interact with 1 across the street. I already have plenty of friends, and I don't like to be bothered at home--I leave them alone, and I expect the same in return.

I live in a gated neigborhood where the average age is 65. I have been there for 8 months now and I still have neighbors that won't wave back to me when I'm running. They just glare. When I stop and try to make conservation they nod and walk inside. Its only 5 or 10 out of the 100 but still pisses me off. I hate to group them together but they are all from CT, NY, or NJ and seem to share the "as_shole" mentality. I'm not a big fan of cops either but I think its more of a where your from, what you have been through type deal. Or its just all you F'ing Yankess.

I live on a dead end street with about 10 houses. I'm midway down the street, where it turns from a public street to a private drive. It's a new neighborhood (2 years old). 4 bedroom houses. We make it a point to know everyone at least by face. I wouldn't say we're freinds with everyone, but without a hello or a brief chat (even about the neighborhood) I would consider that rude. We have one guy on the block who is pretty strange. He and his wife own one car - we live a good distance away from public transportation. He always backs it into the garage as if he needs to make a quick getaway. We never see the wife, only know that they work together at the hosipital. Don't have any kids or vistors. The only time I ever chatted with him, I was pretty skeeved out. I really don't want to talk with him. We think he's in the witness protection program.

my gut feeling tells me he is a dcik. i waved at him when i went by and he left me hanging. oh well. maybe he doesnt like asians. in that case, start drying poultry carcasses by hanging them in your front trees. or maybe he thinks you have more than your fair share of cars. whatever, he is still a cop. and buying a house in the bay area, as a cop cant leave you cheerful. maybe his butt still hurts.

I blame cable TV, the internet and video games. For this and pretty much all of our social ills - and rudeness. I grew up in an idyllic neighborhood. Not a lot of kids, mostly retirees and near retired. Most these old timers would get together for cards, cocktails, barbeques and annual Christmas parties. My folks still live there, and now they are the old timers. My Dad is friendly with everyone and brings in any garbage cans left out and keeps an eye on things - but it is not the same..
