What I do not understand is why 10 million Mexicans are not marching through Mexico City tomorrow demanding an end to official corruption that keeps 99% of them poor and ignorant. Why aren't they?

It's been done many times before, only thing that changes is "more corruption" new presidential candidates that lie, so on and so on. Again, probably part of the reason they are here, with a least a little hope to live on a land with some justice and human rights.

If you look at Mexico's economic #'s they seem pretty good. What the #'s don't tell is the very wide gap between workers that earn good money and workers that earn very little.

Mexico's old political baggage distorts its economy.

Jeez man, use your head, it's a matter of survival.

Obivously your family was one of the lucky ones, that is all that makes your story any different from the others, where I came from it takes over 5 years to get a Visa, that 's after thousands of dollars in fees and with no guarantee of getting in. You think this is an option for those people in poverty in 3rd world country's? It's not!!! It's either make a an attempt for a better life on the other side of the fence or starve every night and watch your children starve with no hope due to the lack of education and oportunity. Then to top it all off many are suppressed by the government, no human rights, no "real" freedoms, corruption at every level of government.
Nothing worth having is easy, and being Irish in New York was far from lucky, maybe you should read up on it. If we let the illegals come in, they will just do to our country what they did to their country. They also pay $1000s to people to sneak them in the US, so that dog don't hunt and should the American tax payer have to pick up the bill for these criminals?? If you feel so strong, why don't you sell your cars and stuff and use that money to pay their ways in?? Or is it only OK if someone else is picking up the bill?? Put your money where your mouth is!! BTW, it is your fault you every one who dies trying to sneak in, whether from the heat or shot, if people like you didn't keep encouraging people to break the law, they wouldn't die!!

Yes, you cannot blame people for wanting to impove their lot in life. But what we have become is a release valve for all the pressures building up in Mexico. Fox & Co. are shipping all their socal problems north and having billions and billions of US$$ flow south. A win-win for the corrupt ruling class. What is going on is not a long term solution for either the US or Mexico. Time for Revolution my friends.

Viva la Revolution!

The thing that amazes me is that this is the ONE ISSUE that actually has a consensus among Americans. You talk to white/black, republican/democrat and the majority of people want tough immigration reform. Heck, even many legal immigrants from Hispanic countries want reform.

Yet the politicians are pandering to the hispanic vote. Did they forget the other 80% of us???

Im conflicted about this immigration issue:

It seems obvious that there is work to do that Americans either do not want to do or there is a shortage of Americans to do them: construction, farming, day layboring, cooking, janitorial duties, trucking.

I suppose we could subsidize this stuff, but aren't we all for a free market here in the States? No body supports free-trade coffee to support South America when we can get it cheaper from Asia right? We do subsidize our farms here, but wouldn't they would all be in Mexico if we didn't? We outsource technology jobs to India because its much cheaper, our computers are made in Asia.

It seems a lot of people want the immigrants gone, and I can understand that, but is there a solution to replace them? Who will build the houses, pick the berries, cook in the restraunts? Does the government step in and pay Americans more to do these jobs, does the market decide?

Your trying so hard to make this a personal attack on me, yet you don't seem to realize that I am a tax paying citizen of this country with children who someday will have to deal with the immigration issue as well. So I have just as much to loose or gain as you do.

for the last time, I am not encouraging people to break the law, but since I have seen how they suffer IN REAL LIFE, I can understand why they make the decissions that they make, the only things that makes them law breakers is our systems inability to let them in legaly.

They are breaking the law, simple as that. We have Americans who are not living the high life, we have legal immigrants who are against this giving in to the illegals and if they die while committing a crime, it is no fault but their own.

lol - no one said it was your fault, again your making this personal. Obiviously your not open to seeing the other side of the story, it's black and white with you.

I can only hope for you that you never experience starvation, but if you do, pray first, then do whatever it takes for you to survive, even I will still give you a drink of my water and a paice of my bread if thats what it takes to keep you alive.

That day, you may see my side of the story, but if you still don't that's ok, at least you survived.
