would you rather have young mothers give birth to the child and then dump them in a park somewhere to die? leave them on a doorstep? place them within the already overcrowded foster parents program? kill them by their own means? or keep them and grow up resenting them? I believe the correct answer for your son is something along the lines of:

'an abortion is when a mommy decides to not follow through with the pregnancy for one reason or another. There are sometimes good reasons, and sometimes there are not... just like with every other decision in this world... I know it's probably a hard idea for you to understand now, but some day you will... and i'll always be here to answer any questions you have about it.'

that's what i would have said.. but what do i know, i'm only 23. I wouldn't have used phrases like "the doctor kills the baby" because kids at that age (the age of your son) already think to extremes with very little reasoning... you probably gave him an image of a big mean man who [insert evil nightmare about methods to killing babies here].

I agree.. a couple should be responsible, and sometimes irresponsible decsions are made... that's another case entirely and a stupid one at that... but sometimes, the most responsible person in the world, taking every precaution, can end up in a situaiton where they may need to make a decision regarding this topic.And I assure you... just as there are a ton of girls out there doing it for the right and even the wrong decisions... I'm sure there are even MORE out there who have the child and end up in one of the scenarios in my opening paragraph...

after all that, everyone is entitled to their opinion, and I respect that.. but when they start preaching to other people and saying they made a huge mistake, and they start to criticize their own decisions, that's when i get pissed... (not saying anyone here has done that). now how do i get down off this soap box?

Like so many times in life, we are rarely ready with the perfect responces. The fact is, the baby is killed. Plain and simple. You can senitize it and wrap it around a choice issue. But at the end of the day a perfectly healthy child is killed. Why, really why? Convenient? I guess we don't have great couples out there who would pay big cash to adopt.

If only...

If only all those who are adamantly against abortion would step forward and take one of these unwanted and love them and raise them and give them what, in many cases, they will never have...,

A chance.

But, right or wrong, when a child is born into an economic and social situation that offers nothing but pain, abuse, and hunger, what chance does the child have? I am not including just those cases that are "inner city", etc, but also many that would be born to middle class or higher but abused because they "cramped mama's style".

No, I do not have the answer, and I will never totally understand the problem in its entirety. But, I would like to think there is a special place for these unwanted souls and many may have been spared a life of pain, crime, addiction, and perhaps the lives of potential victims have also been saved.
