No, it's flawed Republican ideology and vitriol to think terrorism can be isolated or somehow coaxed out onto a field and shot like fish in a barrel.

Sears Tower and Miami show that terrorism is an amorphic body. It can crop up anywhere - Robert Mueller, head of the FBI is saying this right now. Terrorism can be plotted right now in any public or private place in America.

What's ironic is Mueller has thanked Torrance, LA, Toronto and other police departments, as well as private citizens for their help, but NOT the Administration for their wire tapping of people in the U.S.

But the administration somehow thinks the lion's share of terrorism is in Iraq. Sure, a lion's share of oil is in Iraq, but no one under Bush is going to reveal that to the public, will they?

Any one heard any more about this crew? I am curious how many converted to Islam while in prison.

I have several people I know who work at various federal and state prisons, and apparently the Muslims come in and preach the word of the religion of peace in these facilities. More than one is convinced that the next wave of terrorist attacks will come with ex-cons, converted while doing time, acting as foot soldiers

Yeah, so much for 'fighting them over there so we don't have to fight them here...'

This all sounds suspiciously like Padilla -- the guy Ashcroft caught, whose biggest crime was that he uttered the words "dirty bomb." He had no means of creating a 'dirty bomb' but it was important, politically, to time the announcement of Padilla's apprehension and issue an "alert." I wonder if the political timing had anything to do with this one.... nah. Couldn't be.

Impromptu phone call poll into CNN revealed ninety percent of callers believe the whole Sears Tower/Miami situation is blown far out of proportion, and those involved ARE NOT a serious threat.

Those who still watch CNN are the loony left and the ignorant (or both) segment of the population, so those results are no surprise. If they had a poll asking if explosives brought down the WTC building, you would have gotton a similar result.

Face facts, will you? Overzealous informant, overzealous FBI, both of whom were quick to judge, and all for nothing. Even Fox reported it was blown out of proportion.

Now, no one cares, whether they are on the loony left or the repulsive right.

More than that, it was totally manufacturered by government; there was no threat.

Tamil Tigers - the most prolific suicide bombers the world has right now - are not Muslim.

I reckon those guys would have never aspired to conspire with Al Qaeda and bomb anything, if it wasn't for the poorly prosecuted "war on terror"...

My apologies. I didn't know you worked for the justice department and were privy to all the facts about the case.

Then what do you call those who religiously believe everything said by the minions of Rupert Murdock?

'Tis folly to believe any source to the exclusion of other sources. They ALL have an axe to grind ($$$$$$$$$$$)

Mature response in light of an inability to admit you and yours are wrong.

What's your point? I don't give a rip about any of them, some are just loaded with more crap than others.

You can't prove me wrong... You just want to wait for people to get killed then have another commission to investigate what Bush did wrong.

There is no right or wrong. There is simply the need for eternal vigilance. Mistakes will be made, and hopefully be made on the side of caution. Despite the rhetoric to the contrary, the world is more dangerous than it was five short years ago. We should ask ourselves why and then act appropriately rather than going off in all directions at once.

914..My comment was made to point out that your post singled out CNN. Your later post clarifies your meaning.

I think we agree, if we were sitting down over a beer. I don't like this Miami situation getting politicized one way or the other. If these bastards were up to no good - and maybe the only damage they could have done was blow up a storage shed - they need to be taken out of commission. Oklahoma City proved what damage a couple of nuts can do. Throw in a half-dozen and a crazy religious belief, then you've got the potential for a lot more damage.

The Usefulness of Fear
Posted by Lew Rockwell at 01:24 PM

The easiest path to state growth is to "scare the Hell out of the American people," as Sen. Arthur Vandenberg famously advised Harry Truman, who was planning to start the Cold War and worried about garnering public support. No more Red Scare now, of course. We are supposed to get the chills over them Ay-rabs, and anyone who can be connected to them, no matter how implausibly.

Police states typically use the agent provocateur to urge opponents of the regime to commit crimes, at which point they can be arrested amidst great fanfare.

Did that happen in Miami? I don't know, but the ghetto kids held up for our shivering apparently never got beyond loose talk. Gonzalez, are we really supposed to worry about these poor pomade-salesmen-by-day, play-soldiers-by-night? They asked the pretend al-Qaeda (real federal) agent for shoes!

Re: The Usefulness of Fear

Lew: From the indictment, it looks like Deputy Attorney General Pistone's real beef against these guys was:

Smells more like Waco than WTC...

No word on whether it was in fact the US agent undercover "al-quaeda" representative who first suggested the Sears Towers to our shoeless "warriors."

Oddly, these big scares seem to happen in summer and autumn every two years on even-numbered years...

Fear-Mongering
Posted by Butler Shaffer at 08:42 PM

Lew, it's not only the people who are connected with Al-Qaeda that we are supposed to fear, but those who have no such connection whatsoever. After all, "they" -- never "us" -- conspire to do vicious things, and the lack of any evidence to connect people to destructive purposes only shows how effective their conspiracy is, right? Amateurs are probably clumsy enough to leave evidence of their wrongdoing. The really dangerous people are those who carry out their deeds without leaving evidence. So, in what passes for "reasoning" in this post-Orwellian world, it is those for whom there is absolutely no evidence of terrorist participation that the state will ask us to fear.
