Maybe you guys can answer an iTunes question..

Evbery couple of weeks or so, I get this error message saying that the iTunes library cannot be found. I have done everything Apple suggests on the support site, download the latest version, yet it still does it. I just drag and drop all my music folders back in (30GB) and wait for it to fail the next time. Other than that, It's pretty cool

Sorry, I know Macs a lot better. Years ago, a client of mine pubiished First Aid for Windows which was mainly for correcting pathnames by locating lost resources.

I take it you aren't having bad pathname problems with other apps?

No, and that was my first guess as to the problem. I have reset the path a few times, deleted the library file, and it still keeps doing it

I can't find any evidence that this is common.

But here's where I'd look:

Well... my 20gig Ipod crapped out today. It is 22 months old, and rarely used.

And I do mean RARELY used. I take it on trips when I travel, but find no use for it around the house or shop.

It will not reset, and will not reinitialize. Not surprised, though, seeing how it sounds like the HD went out. You can hear a LOT of noise coming from the unit when you power it on. (sounds like somebody running gravel through a food processor)

I called Apple "customer care" and explained the problem to them. The lady said, "At this point, we recommend that you just purchase a new unit."

She said they could fix it, but it would cost more than a new one. She did mention that if I take it to an authorized retailer, I could get 10% off of a new one when I turn in the bad one.

Well, I may buy a new MP3 player, but it sure as hell won't be an Ipod.

Meanwhile, this suckers coming apart!!

UPDATE:

Well, THAT didn't take long.
I found this website that explains very clearly how to disassemble the Ipod. They also sell every part you need to make minor and major repairs. They also offer upgraded batteries with longer life than original.

The "cost more than a new one to fix" line from the Apple wanker seems to be a bit overstated. New hard-drive for my Ipod = $89

I bet Apple pays even less for the HD, meaning that their line is just a lie meant to boost sales and nothing more.

Customer care, my ass.

Hopefully this site will be of use to other Ipod sufferers:

I'm resurrecting this thread because I finally got a piece of software I like and have dumped iTunes for good. I am using Anapod Explorer from Red Chair software and this has revolutionized my iPod experience. My iPod now looks like a standard windows device an I can drag whatever I want on and back off to my PC. It allows me to edit song properties (artist, album, genre) and it has a great search capability. No more jumping thru iHoops to get some content on this silly thing.

You know it really is a pretty nice piece of hardware.

I'll be giving that a try, since I hate iTunes.

+2. I've been agonizing over ipod vs. mp3 player. My son, who turns 10 in a few months, wants an iPod...he loves music (like his Dad ). I **HATE** iTunes. I was so ready to go for the Creative Zen 30GB but my wife said his whole classroom is iPod *aware* he would not be happy w/o the Apple product... I'll check out this Anapod Explorer. Thanks!

Good to know there is this support on PPOT! I'm getting a 30 GB video one for xmas, my first venture into ipods. My two teenagers assure me that they can walk me through it.

Beware that all music you download from iTunes will be in a format not recognized by any other device and have restrictions on how many machines it will play on. Sure there are ways to overcome but why be forced to jump through the hoops when there are more convenient, and cheaper, solutions for digital music.

Yeah, not recognized by any other devices which is 30% of the market and that you can only play those songs on five of your own computers. Wow, that quite limiting.

I'm talking DVD players, car CD players, all *other* mp3 aware devices. Now you could just buy the iPod adapters for them but I don't quite have the love for such a large amount of coolaid...
