Another 1911 project. Need advice.

Just STOLE this mil-spec Springfield 1911 for $275 delivered!

Only thing missing is the barrel, which I can find cheap enough. Now what the hell do I build this thing into? I'm going to pick up my blackened stainless Springfield (posted two weeks ago) in a few minutes and it's already got everything I want in a 1911. But this one above was just too sweet to pass up, though I don't know what I want to do with it. I guess the first order is to get a barrel, so I can see how it shoots. I suppose I could swap the one out from my other Springfield. Ok, let me hear your suggestions.

Umm... why would such an otherwise complete gun be missing a barrel, and be sold at such a bargain? Do you know its history? Was the barrel simply damaged, or might there be something else going on with it?

I think the seller has several 1911 projects of his own going on and may have used the barrel for one of them and then changed his mind about what he had wanted this one for. I people who have the same problem with 911's, not just 1911's.

Keep the exterior plain-jane milspec (aside from stainless of course), go for total accuracy/reliability on the inside.

Send a message via AIM to dhoward
Fitting a new barrrel for accuracy requires a lug-cutter.
Generally though you can throw a new barrel in and have a fully-functional 1911.

Just got it tonight and it's pretty nice. I'm pretty sure Robar will get this gun for some refinishing and custom work. I'm thinking of black (Roguard) everything and making the trigger, hammer and barrel bushing stainless, having a front dovetail cut, adding night sights, a beavertail and a guide rod. I'll get a skeletonized hammer and Gold Cup trigger for it too.

I'd skip the night sites. I have one pistol with them and they seem to be more hype than help.

May not go with night sights, but will have a dovetail cut upfront and may go with the red/green fiber optic sights.

go with the threaded barrel and get your tax stamp...................and buy a SUPPRESSOR!

$200 bucks for stamp and however much for suppressor, dependant on how quiet you want it! BIG FUN little noise!

for $$$$ sake when you go w/ a suppressor, think about the calibers you want to suppress and thread those barrels so (1) suppressor works on each. ie. in my case gem makes a suppressor that will allow any 9mm to pass thru it. so hk-94,hk 9 compact,hk vp 70Z, robar beretta m-9(italian),can all be threaded the same.

since i have (3) .45's thats a no brainer(all springfields)-simple.

do not own one yet, but it is in my future. problem is...............22's suppressed are so damn fun its sick. used one on 10/22 and the only thing you hear is action moving. they are quiet!. used one on .22 ruger pistol and the only thing you can hear was us laughing!!!! would love one on little itty baby berretta(a la mossad style) buying integral suppressed is not the hot ticket except for looks. being able to switch from pistol to rifle is stretching your bucks and fun factor further. ie ruger 9 rifle-marlin camp .45 rifle. calico .22 rifle(used in prisons for riot suppression w/frangible rounds)- E&L mfg owner-val used to live up the road from me-100rd drums of .22 suppressed on full auto............NOW THATS FUN!

But I just about only shoot at the NRA indoor range, so a suppressor would not be much fun for me. Someday when I buy a real piece of land and have a dirt berm backstop built, then a suppressor would be a good idea for me.

Another question. I'm thinking of sending it to Robar for refinishing in Roguard with some components in NP3, a beavertail, guide rod, dovetail front sight, etc. Anyway, their supplying and fitting a match-grade barrel is $320 alone. Ouch! So I'm wondering how much of a difference there really would be between that and my just dropping in a plain old stock barrel that I find on eBay for $60. I would use this gun for target shooting and maybe occasional carry. I don't ever shoot at 25 yds., so the 1" vs. 2" groups at that distance don't make a difference to me. I usually shoot at 5-10 yds. while at the range.

since i personally know robbie barkman, i will say this....................if you want a pistol or rifle to NEVER FREEZE in the nastiest of arctic/antarctic weather..............NP3 the entire weapon. swear by the stuff from wet rainy sleety snowy yucckkky colorado deer hunt a while back, on my M40-A1 REM .308! have also sent my M-9 Beretta in for NP3. as i get the bucks i send them in and wait 6-9months sometimes. he is backlogged up to his eyeballs w/iraq-afghan weapons. np3 also makes for damn easy cleaning.
also check out mcmillians web page. lots of deals on really cool rifle stocks. fiberglass in every camo config and style. factory seconds you cant even tell the blem.

This will be my 4th gun Robar has worked on. I visited them in January and love them. They are great. I think Roguard is as good as NP3 and I want black. I have NP3 on three of my others. I'm thinking of having NP3 my hard-chromed P7.
