Good morning Gents. Just got back from a walk with the dog and thought I would check in.
So here is where I sit, 1) I have offered to pay for em to come out for the day (reg fees and 1 tank of gas). 2) He has accepted! (also said he would pay for it himself but I will stand by word on this) 3) Those willing to nut up and come out I look forward to seeing you. 4) This event is on a Wednesday! I run with OTR because of the midweek dates. It is easier to skip out of work (when your the boss) then to miss a weekend of family activities. 5) em has cleared his calender to come out mid week with a whats looks from pictures to be a extremely nice example of an early 911. So he is going to drive it to the track, flog it at the track, give people rides to prove what he has said (in the relm of tach readings and engine pull) and then drive home. He may have said some things that don't add up on paper but things get interesting in real life ( I have an engine that was built by a not so reputable builder that according to this board would blow up when I turned the key. It sees 7200-7500 every track day I attend. Its a 2.2T motor with those Zenith carbs. not recommending them at all but strange things happen in life) 6) Is the motor in this 911S completely stock. After re-reading this thread and talking to em I am going to go out on a limb and so no it is not (not much of a limb I know). Is it a proper case and MFI pump for said year, yes. What has been done internally and to the pump we wont know unless we tear into the engine. Not going to happen. 7) The date has been set and I am willing to wait it out until then to see the outcome. Im sure it will now only provide fuel for the fire. em, I look forward to seeing you on the 15th and call me anytime to discuss this or any thing else. I am sure that all who attend will be sitting at the OutBack throwing back cold ones with you and laughing about this and talking about the days events. Time for breakfast. :D |
Adder - thought I would throw in the link for OTR. It is their event and you can find all the info for registration on their site. If you look close enough you will even find an Ask Jack section!
Open Track Racing |
. for some reason I lost the subscription to the thread and I dont want to miss out on the fun. DB since I live back east I wont be at the track but I am happy to offset some of your costs for his registration and gas.

I think there is movie material here. I'm working on a title.
|
I sure hate that I am so far away. All the great stuff goes down miles and miles away.
I would love to be there and meet some of you guys. But most of all, I would love to get some lessons. (and throw coldones back at the OutBack :) ) Good luck to all and be safe. We don't want this thread to become a memorial. |
It's great that this all seems to be playing out. Better than reality TV.
Let's just not say or do anything over the next few weeks that blows this all apart. It would also be interesting, since there is some time, to have the experts break out their calculators and slide rules and their best technical analysis and explain why, how, and what it would take for the Targa to meet the challenge. Some of this has already been attempted but now there is time to give it careful and considered thought. The rest of us will hopefully learn something in the process. |
Good work Dan! And as for me, I don't really care if it is a true 165 mph or a true 8500 on the tach. If em can pull multiple indicated 8500's on the engine in the car and it doesn't blow up then I for one am satisfied with at least that claim. As he has said he will not run it up to an indicated 165mph on the track we will just be left to wonder.
|
I believe he (em) said he had done it 10 years ago, I didn't get the impression it was an everyday occurance.
|
i believe it will spin up to 8500 no problem not on stock internals but it will do it none the less its the 165 claim thats most people are caught up on
|
This took an hour to read, but was worth it.
Why would we think that a car with an unknown powerplant would not spin up to 8500 repeatedly? The thing could be balanced to the microgram range and built like a brick *****house, for all anyone knows. Then again, with stock muffler, distributor, injection, et al, how much power can it make? Was it configured this way when it did the 165?...who knows. Was the top open? So, the guy writes bad ads (how did you sell the other countless cars you owned?)...so what. I bought my car on Ebay, but not for 40K plus. I hope someone takes some pictures of the big day, and that everyone together has a few cold ones afterward. Pat |
FWIW, EM has stated that yes indeed the top was off.
|
I've read and re-read (and re-read) malibuexec's posts, and here's what I find:
"They have seen this car run at over 165 mph" (This from the ebay ad) "The speedo showed 168 mph" (This from his first post to this thread) "The 165 MPH was 10 years ago in the open desert on a 5 mile long straight road with a loose NUT behind the wheel!" (This from 10-12-06) No where else - repeat no where else - does he mention the 165 mph. Nor does he state or promise anywhere - repeat anywhere - that the car 'will' or 'can' or 'is capable of' 165 mph. Every mention of 165 mph was in the past tense with no claim to current capablity or a promise to exhibit or perform this speed. If you don't want to believe that he made that speed in that vehicle - that's your choice - fine. But it seems there is a pervasive mis-reading that he said it would, or could or that he would demonstrate that speed: that just isn't in the record. Jim (No one was with me when I took my old Fiat 124 Spyder - after I rebuilt the engine and broke it in - up to 124 mph. Maybe that wasn't much of a feat come to think of it...but it was 26 years ago). |
GOLDGUNNER THANKS FOR BEING ABLE TO READ...
Jim,
Thanks for taking the time to actually read what I wrote! Here in So Cal English is a second language for many so actually being able to read is a real problem for many... Based upon some of the responses I guess that the problem exists in other parts of the country also.. For the guys who cant be there on the 15th.. Here is a freebie!: The camera had a split second delay so the needle was on the way back down!.. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1160775309.jpg And Jim I have a book and it says that a 124 Fiat has a top speed of 96MPH.. "124 MPH" so you must be lying also!..Just kidding:D |
Uh, now we have a swipe at racism...
...combined with an inability to read a tach -- 7,950 = 8,500 in some alternate reality I guess. |
I had other plans for Sunday, but I have got to see this smackdown in person. Bringing my Canon to document the event.
See y'all at the track. |
Hatpix - Please read the thread because if you show up on Sunday you will out of luck. Its November 15th a Wednesday!
em - I really dont want to know how you took that picture! ;) |
DB.. THIS IS THE MOVIE BUSINESS WE HAVE LOTS OF TRICKS!
RANDYWEBB,
This is exactly what I was refering to.. I know that when you open a book that you just like to look at the pretty pictures. But in this case above the picture there are some letters, grouped into words then tied together in what is called a sentence .. This is what it says: "The camera had a split second delay so the needle was on the way back down.. " Please have someone read and explain to you the meaning of the writing above the photo and MAYBE you wont look so stupid when you post... "combined with an inability to read a tach -- 7,950 = 8,500 in some alternate reality I guess." That aint no STINKIN 7,950.. Thats is clearly 7,987.085 RPM.. for the Mathematicians who responded.. |
