what sort of benefits do you get at work

I may be changing jobs. At first glance it would seem like a no brainer, the new job is nearly a $20k increase in salary, but when you compare the benefits the difference is less than $5k which is not enough to leave a good job.

My current job pays my cell bill (I don't even get the bill) since I'm on call (but only 2 weeks out of every 8), pays my dsl (I expense it every month), has a decent matching/vesting policy for 401k, pays me a couple hundred extra per week when I'm on call, pays a yearly bonus, decent/average medical ins, and pays for a certain amount of college per year.

The new company doesn't yet match on the 401k, will pay some school (don't know the specifics), doesn't pay cell or dsl, costs $680 per month for family medical ins (as opposed to $250), doesn't have a bonus for my position. They just got some new investors who are bailing them out of almost bankruptcy. If I can get another 3500 on top of what I expect them to offer it will just be worth considering.

So, I'm curious what sort of benefits you fellas get out of curiousity.

I'd stay where you are. Bonus?? That must be the turkey we got 12 years ago for Thanksgiving.

roughly 10% bonus/yr based on personal & company objectives
Company stock purchase plan topped up 25%
pension plan
medical/dental for spouse & dependants
very generous bereavement & parental leave
3 weeks vacation + stat holidays
Cell
40% cost of phone & high-speed connection
personal education up to ~ 1k/yr

Benefits are great, but salary isn't smokin'. No complaints though, cost of living is very inexpensive here.

about 2 days off vacation per month, plus when the college is closed, with pay (2-3 weeks around xmas, spring break, 3 and 4 day weekends). Health is free for me, extra 300/mo to add my wife and 2 kids (wife alone was 250/mo extra), free classes for me, my wife, and my kids when they are old enough. Raises have been 3-4.5% per year.

sounds like some of you get pretty good benefits. Seems the range is all over the place.

My salary is very generous, benefits are cut to the bone and medical/prescription drug coverage is almost nonexistent. I get a company car at a subsidized rate and by March many of us will be cut. Oh well, I really wanted to enter the IT job market again... Not!

Where I am now:

- 160 hours PTO per year (breaks down to 4 weeks paid time off)
- 401k (employee contribution only though)
- Profit sharing (once you've been here three years, not there yet)
- Medical/dental/vision
- Optional HSA (I do it)
- Optional short-term disability insurance (I get it)
- Optional life insurance (I get it)

Where I'm going (probably starting at a new place Monday):
- 2 weeks paid vacation per year
- Week between Christmas & New Year's off every year
- Medical/dental/vision
- 401k (employee contribution only)

Better salary and no more commuting through downtown L.A. = priceless. Plus the work is going to be a lot more interesting.

You guys are lucky; all I get is GERD, lower back pain, and swivel-chair spread.

Wow, sounds like my current 401k kicks butt. They match 50% of employee contribution up to 8% of salary and you vest 25% per year starting when you get hired. So the company matching for me is up to a couple grand a year. I've been here 2.5 years so far so I'm 50% vested. If I make it to March I'll be 75% vested.

Yeah, but aren't you contract? In my experience contract means that you make 25%-50% more than a perm employee.

I don't think you're crazy, I think you're absolutely right, regardless of what your benefits are if your job/boss makes you miserable it's time to go. No point working there until you the stress makes you unhealthy so you can't enjoy the rest of your life. Bangin' benefits though, wow.
