What is it with people? Do they actually think this is proper English, or are they just too lazy?

Sad but true. Proper grammar = a dying art.

That's why I can't stand Bimmerforums sometimes. 1/3 posts looks like that.

He writes how Kimi Raikkonen talks, only with a little more enthusiam, and without saying "you know" every six words.

Kimi Raikonnen talks?

I thought he just mumbled.

They don't actually teach writing in school. I used to volunteer to tutor at a local middle school, and these kids had no clue. What's worse, the teachers would read material that was obviously terrible, smile, and say, "That's nie, Johnny," before walking off. Nobody's enforcing the standard, so it's no wonder that the kids have no idea what the standard is. Aargh.

My dad's the kind of guy who still writes angry letters to newspaper editors to complain about poor English usage. He's even gotten an apology letter back from the NYT. He's old school, but so few people appreciate that kind of writing anymore.

We had a support person on my team a few years ago who would write in stream-of-consciousness. Her e-mails (and documentation) would contain no punctuation or capital letters. Just one big, continuous paragraph.

It was thoroughly unreadable.

She lasted less than a month.

The sad thing is, I was less than a year older than her. She is my generation!

I can honestly say I didn't learn grammar in school. I learned it from reading. Mark Twain, Frank Herbert, Ayn Rand, J.R.R. Tolkien--I read them all before high school.

I learned some grammar in school, but more from reading and from hanging with my old man. The only crime that compared to mishandling a gun in that house was poor writing. Gawd, he is a maniac for that stuff. I was fortunate enough to go to the same prep school he did and even had some of the same teachers he had. You don't get out of that school without knowing how to read and write. So I know where he got it. You ought to see him wince when he hears someone on tv say "less" when "fewer" is warranted. You'd have thought someone had just tossed a brick through the window.

I frequent 5 or so forums and have found that this one and 2 others are the only ones that I can read without wincing continuously. One, a Dallas Cowboy forum is great for info but at least a third of the posts are unintelligible.

Our former nanny was a graduate of the University of Washington. A good school to be sure. I read some material she had written for her new companys website.....dear lord. It was almost incoherent.

Here is an actual sample of the person's writing I mentioned:

Quote:
me too. just make sure that you have the dates right on your caledar up to that point I will check with Dianne and see what she says about this I have the right dates all worked out, and then she told me that Veteran's day we do not work
I had november 6th here and November 20th at Corporate and then December I had the 4th here and the 18th at corporate
I think that I'm right about that too
The thing that is really baffling, is that this is the FIRST e-mail in what became a painfully long thread. She began the e-mail (to several people) with "me too.". Apparently it was in response to some verbal conversation.

What does a high school teacher do when he realizes one of his students has 5th grade English skills?

I'm afraid, with more money and effort thrown at No Child Left Behind, crap like this will only get worse.
