Manners have gone the way of the Dodo in this world.
If I'm in a store like Blockbuster or a grocery store, and I walk past someone looking at something on a shelf where i have to walk between them and what they are looking at I say "excuse me". I think I've heard excuse me from people doing the same about 1% of the time.

some asswipe parked his escalade in a compact spot in the parking structure today, leaving a shrunken spot next to my car.
q: was it wrong of me to say "thank you for being a jerk-off prick"? I want to make sure i get this manners thing right... |

Oh but there's more....some have been mentioned, but here's my list of bygones:
Thank you Please Excuse me Pardon (not WHAT) Sorry May I? (as in asking for something before just taking) These are words that seem to be dissapearing from our kids' collective vocabulary. I HATE that it is happening and Mike and I must sound like broken records with our kids and their friends when we pull them up on forgetting this stuff. The schools DO NOT help. Manners seem to have flown out the bloody window. Adults are worse.... FWIW I too am one of those people who will loudly declare "you're welcome" when someone forgets to thank me...or "you're excused" when they push past me but the embarrassment potential seems to be lost on most. I don't use public transpot much; but when I do I will always stand for someone who needs a seat more than me...yet I see kids and fit adults lolling in their seats not giving a damn about the little old lady or man who can barely keep their balance in a rollicking train. It's disgusting! Last week I was patiently waiting for someone to vacate a parking spot in a busy shopping strip. I gave her plenty of room so she could pull out around me without having to cross into the oncoming traffic. As I started to reverse into the parking spot another woman whilst talking on her goddamn mobile zipped into the spot. My 14yo son slunk in the passenger seat as he knew what was coming....I reversed up to this woman's car and asked her to vacate the spot as it was clear I had been waiting for it to be vacated - she got mighty p!ssed as she had to cut short her phone conversation; declared there was enough room for me to squeeze in front of her car (there was not)...so I edged mine closer so she could not get out her door and asked her again to move. She was ranting and I wasn't moving....the crowd was gathering around us (what fun) and in the end she knew she had to move. She did this whilst hurling abuse out the window at me (with her young kids in the car -good one). I got out of my car to a round of applause from the latte set having their morning fix and lots of words of "good on you"...this ***** had no manners...I wouldn't do what she did and I wasn't taking it from her; but I'll bet she didn't learn anything from the experience either (except not to mess with me again). Manners are part of the genteel life...they should come naturally and easily. In the most part they seem to be dissappearing - but this will NOT happen in my house. Of that I am sure... Cheers, Lisa |

Actually he did you a favor, and you SHOULD thank him. Since no one could park in that shrunken spot, it was one less opportunity for some other a$$wipe to ding your door. Thanks for letting me point this out. |

Chris.. Thanks.
And to the rest of you guys thanks...for great stories, help when I need it, good jokes, better arguments, fixing the firefighters car, telling me my car is nice, checking in to see how my daughter was after her accident , the new friends and the constant flow of pictures of sweet honeys and fast cars. My hat is off to you all. Thanks.
