Since they asked they had to realize the answer could be no as well as yes.
Since they asked you gave them an honest answer. No dickage here.

I think it's rude for a pet owner to assume it's OK to bring their pets with them when they visit. We have ferrets and I don't take them to other's homes... They asked and they got an answer, no problems!

Well, at least they asked. My wife's son comes over tonight for Christmas. I'm over at the neighbors fixing some "storm damage" from a tree of mine. I walk in the house just as one of 2 of their dogs is soiling my carpet. They just brought the dogs on in, never asked........I felt like going thru the roof, but already have too many projects......

Since they asked then they have an understanding the dog is trouble so they should respect your answer and it's well within your rights. However, if it's important to you to have them there you might put up the dog's ***** for a day but I wouldn't.

What if they bring the dog anyway, even after you said "no"? Family can be the biggest dick of all.

You're only being a dick if you're rude about it......kinda like they were when they brought that dog and then they didn't control it in another person's home!!
' When they ask I'd say, "Honestly I'd prefer you don't because he terrorized our pets (don't say "cats" - it lets them know you care about your animals as much as they do about theirs) last time he was here and it'd be more relaxing for all of us without having to deal with that." If they don't care for that, tough! You took the high road and if they aren't mature enough to understand that, who wants 'em around anyway?!

Yes, you're a dick. Anyone who asks is one
![]() but you are also right...And no, they did the right thing by asking. They know the dog misbehaved last time. If they bring it anyway, lock in garage or tie up in back yard. No dogs in the house, it terrorizes the cat.

Just borrow my dog the next time you visit them.
They will have no trouble telling you not to bring another dog to their place.

Every time Mother comes over she brings her little yipping Chihua. I keep telling her to stop bringing Vandamme over as he is prone to *****ing and p!ssing all over the place. But does she listen...NO...she thinks the balless, little fker is so cute.

Hmm, lots of agreement here.
Some things to consider, though: 1) The argument "It's your house, your rules" isn't very helpful. That just states an obvious power, but gives no help in the real issue: When to use the power. "Gee, auntie, I find uncle to be mildly unpleasant, please leave him at home" obviously not a good move. 2) Interestingly, in the dog threads, everyone here raves about how dogs are such important parts of their family. Which is true. So you need to look at it from your relative's perspective. You are asking them to leave a family member at home alone during the holidays. So are you being a dick? I think it depends on who you ask. To Rocky's owners, absolutely yes. Rightly or wrongly, they will think that. And others will likely agree with them. You are insulting them and their family member. To an objective observer? Hmm. I think it's a closer call than most here say. I think I'd try to find a middle ground or solutions to the problems. For example, maybe put a small, low gate/barrier on the steps leading upstairs. The cats can go there for refuge. The dog can't track dirt up there. Don't let the dog go outside, so it can't pick up dirt. Etc. There are almost always solutions the work ok for everyone. It's only a few hours. So, were you a dick? I think it's a close call, in the eyes of some, you certainly were. The question is, was it worth it to you? I think there may be some other underlying familial issues here (as there are in every family!). Last edited by the; 12-24-2006 at 08:04 AM.. |
