Hey guys,
If anyone is interested, I'll be doing my Moscow Coup Attempt thing at El Cid Wednesday night. Free show. Just throwing it out there.

We have called our local Councilman and complained about this for approximately 6 years now. Their response is that they will repair the potholes as soon as they can. Do any of you remember how they were "repairing" the potholes about 9 months ago on Mulholland, this happened because of residents complaining.

The problem is that they don't repair the potholes. Please check out the huge mound of asphalt at Deep Canyon and Mulholland. It is 6 inches high. It will destroy your suspension or lowered car, or both for sure, if you hit it.

They say that they don't have the resources to re-pave Mulholland.
But I bet the truth is that they don't have the resources to patrol Mulholland once it is repaved. They know it will be Le Mans again on Mulholland if it is fixed. They are waiting for the cameras, so that they won't need to patrol as much. I got a ticket deep in Franklin Canyon recently for failing to stop fully at a stop sign. The damn automatic camera got me. Well, guess what? That is what will eventually happen all over the place, they won't need cops to issue traffic violations. They will do it with cameras. Remember the book 1984? We all laughed when it was required reading in High School, it is no laugh now.

By the way, in the past John Hall and I would go out and fix a pot hole that was in the apex of a turn sometimes. After really messing up the alignment a few times on a certain hole, we figured it was smarter to fix it now then to wait a year for the city to fix it. By that time, our cars would be wasted.

If you want, I'll buy the asphalt if you come with me to fix the hole. I'm getting tired of memorizing the pothole locations so that I can avoid them. There was one on Coldwater two years ago that was so big, an entire wheel would fit inside it (really hard on Suspension).

We need the right vehicle!!

MFI Pump Update

Well, it's been two weeks since the MFI pump was put into releasing solution and it hasn't freed up.

I oiled it well to prevent flash rusting after taking it out of the Chemtool.

The MFI pump is now singing, "We're off to see the Wizard, the wonderful Wizard of Bosch". I will now send it to be repaired in northern California.

The poor thing was too laquered up with old fuel (possibly corroded) for me to free up. It will probably need rebuilding. That will take 6 weeks and $1500.00 That will give me the time to rebuild the brakes, do some repair, and find new tires

In the photo below, you can see the cam that drives the pump's 'fuel delivery pistons'.

In this photo, the Bosch emblem shows the displacement, 2.8 liters.

That's a bummer, Chris. At least it will be in the right hands and hopefully will return like new.

Thanks Dave, the MFI is the heart of the engine, and rebuilding it will refresh it so it will run like it did in 1976. After all, it has only 4000 original miles on the car and drivetrain.

I am looking forward to going for a putt on Mulholland soon with the Carrera.

I've noticed less police presence up there lately.

However, the Prius presence is way up! Is there some rule about never driving over 20mph if you own one of these BS status symbols?

The Prius has impowered the hippies and tree sitters with a politically correct status vehicle. These folks take pride in the fact that they can cruise the carpool lane alone without fear of fines and save the whales at the same time. The Hybrid is a marketing wonder if you think about it.

...... a small displacement gas engine and a regenerative electric drive. It's not pure electric and does generate emissions. The system operates on what is called "series parallel". It's all in the marketing. The Hybrid is a compromise at best for the real electric vehicle.

A friend of mine had a EV1 back in 1999. Car hauled butt for an electric vehicle. I do like the fact that the electric motors are capable of 10,000 rpms but the downside is they have rev limiters to conserve the batteries. They even have hot rod electric cars that pull off some amazing top end speed and acceleration.

High tech yes! The biggest reason why Hybrids conserve fuel is they do not idle. The gas engine shuts down at idle, when stopped and when descending hills where a gas engine is least effecient.

I love the look on a Hybrid owners face when I tell them the nickel metal hydride batteries are hazardous........then walk away..............they go straight for the closest tree!

And now back to our regular programming

I watched KOTM again... interesting is the fact that more scenes than previous thought were in fact shot on or near the course. Story has it that filming was done exclusively on the Griffith side which is clearly not the case.

The first scene here was shot at Mulholland and Allenwood just east of Skyline. A little double checking confirms this is actually Dennis Hopper driving in this scene. (rumor confirmed). They didnt let him drive again for insurance issues!
The shot before the girls was at Deadmans going west into the course. At (0:27) sure looks like Carls to me!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AxhgLYiw-5s&feature=related

A few scenes in this clip were: Mulholland and Wrightwood (02:12)
and the course (02:25) and at (3:33-3:37) sure appears to be the course.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=170eDX89gE8&feature=related

As I have mentioned to Chris there was a film crew perched above Carls for a few days and nights prior to release of KOTM. They had a Nightsun illuminating the course above Carl’s and were just filming local traffic and air. A few unofficial fast cars came through and then the crew was gone. I used to go up to the radio station lot overlooking the course and kickback as it had a birds eye view. Was a safe zone as the cops never came up there.

I still wonder if this crew was related to KOTM or the making (back story) of KOTM?

Chris, need to check out that footage you are rat-holing!
