This is great Chris. I can only imagine the Carrera is just now broken in after 30 plus years and will be receiving its third oil change? To quote Morgan Freeman in the Shawshank Redemption: "Geology is the study of pressure and time. That's all it takes, really. Pressure and time" Chris got a little of both here. "Pressure and Time". Some new found aquaintances and old ones rekindled. Good times and a shiny silver gem emerging after hiding in the aggregate after all these years. |

Took the racecourse today. Noticed there's an open house for a place on Bowmont. Someone (with money, meaning not me) should buy it (or should we start a fund?) so that we can open/close the gate at our convenience.
edit: Oh yeah, and congrats to Chris on the progress. Definitely looking forward to the day (night) when that car is back on Mul. I find it a bit ironic that at the intersection of your street and Mul, there's a speed limit sign and something about radar enforcement. |

This evening, while coming back from San Diego, I noticed lots of nice fog on Mulholland. The pavement was dry and no cars on Mul, perfect conditions for racing...Oh Boy! Remember, when there's fog, the Whirlypig can't see you. ;) |

He said that the pump looked fairly new ;) (lol) but the main problem it had was that all the cam followers had stuck (probably contaminated or old fuel). He said he had never seen this in a Porsche pump, only in Mercedes pumps. The cam followers sit on the fuel delivery cam that opens up fuel for a particular line going to a cylinder. It is timed with the engine so that fuel is delivered at precisely the right time when the intake valve is open and the piston is reaching top-dead-center. As a cam follower is lifted up by it's own cam lobe high spot, it delivers an exact amount of fuel to the injector for that cylinder. By the way, I sent Robert all of my injectors and he said that the six would work, but that they are sticky and need cleaning with a fuel additive for injectors. That should clean them up. He adjusted the idle circut to be slightly rich (normal procedure), but said that I could adjust it further by turning in or out the sprung-screw located low on the back of the pump. If you turn the screw clockwise or in, the pump will enrichen (at idle), and likewise turning it out leans the mixture. The control rack is free now, and all fuel delivery pistons are within normal parameters. It is calibrated for a 2.8 liter RSR. We are getting closer. |

Front Brake Rotors Clean
The front brake rotors were rusty as well, and full of Daddy Long Leg Spiders.

I'm holding a new set of stainless steel brake lines to replace the 32 year old stainless lines in the car. It's a good idea to replace the brake lines every few years for safety's sake. I will check the steering rack mounting bolts for tightness and make sure that there is no tight spots in the steering rack sequence. Before one drives a car that has been out of service for some time, it is very important to check the brakes and steering. Two things one cannot live without. ;) The entire brake system will be flushed clean with new DOT5 Racing Brake Fluid. Have you solved the problem of new tires yet? Are you going to try to find Bluestreaks or are you going to try to fit something new? Does anyone even make those tires anymore??? Also, have you figured out the registration issues yet? |

heheh those vintage tires look comical. how do they compare in performance to current tires? wouldn't you want the best possible performance tires regardless of automobile year?

Actually what most people arent aware of is Bluestreaks are Racing Eagles. Goodyear just changed the name of its official racing tire in 1980. Prior to the Gatorback if you look at the tread design of a Bluestreak its the same as the square blocked tread of the racing Eagle. This was the result of the tire war between Goodyear and Michelin in Formula One. Chris's tires look like the G7-Cobra tread which was very popular back in the when. Even the vintage rubber available today mostly uses the latest in rubber technology. Same look just new ingredients made on old molds. Even the G19 slick is still used in competition today. Biggest issue is going to be able to fit the 15 inch wheels. Knowing Chris he will come up with something interesting. |
it's not just the rubber compound that's advanced light years in recent years, it's also the tread design. how can you compare the goodyear bluestreak oldskool tread design;
