Protecto Plate reads delivered 11/69 at A.E.Nugent chevy, the halcyon days of the MRA.. Dave B didn't you loan him a screwdriver for curbside repairs on this one day up there??

Let me help with this subject because it was my brother Bret and I that were headed home from a night on the graveyard shift cruising the hill and actually saw this silver Corvette with the hood up facing eastbound right at Java (Chris). I noticed the side pipes, 200s' and stock wheel wells and hood, As we pulled up the there was a guy bent over the engine compartment, we asked if he needed any help as we drooled over the car and as he stands up and turns around says " do you have a screwdriver" my brother then turned to me and said the infamous words holly S**T! it's Ben Hur! What a nice guy he was to us, this was '77-'78.

Fast forward a couple of years later I was working at Universal Studios on a picture called "Gray Lady Down" and Charlton Heston was the star. Guess what? One day I saw this dark green Vette out back so over I went to investigate, as soon as I saw it I knew who's car it was. After noticing the upgrades such as the Good Year Blue streaks, (no flares yet)lap belts and paint job I just stood there thinking this car is cool. Mr Heston came outside saw me looking in the window and said "you like Vette's?" I replied yes and then I said, you painted it and added a few things huh? We then had a fifteen minute discussion about big block Chevrolets and Mulholand that I will never forget. Very nice man.

One day still working on the lot I was on the roof of one of the buildings near Lankershim Blvd hearing and seeing the car leave the lot remembering how much his car sounded like Charlie's Vette. Funny the next day I heard the car again looked up thinking I would see the newly painted Green '69 only to see the Blue '67. Wow!

Thanks for clarifying Bart.
So it was silver, then green, then red, with body changes happening while Heston owned it. Wow, three color changes!

Sorry Mark, you were correct that this was the old dark green Corvette.
Personally I liked it in dark green, more "clandestine" than bright red.

I've been following this thread and really enjoying reading the history.

I remember watching the King of the Hill ...back before I could drive but I was still a gearhead and Porsche afficionado having ridden in the back seat of a variety of Dad's 911s from an early age.

I've got to say I really admire you guys that lived this stuff.

Looking forward to the new improved book Banning!

Cheers,
JZ

I just got another response from the owner of Heston's Vette after asking if the car had been green.

Yes, it was green when I got it. Eddie

Conclusive evidence (and Bart's testimony) proves that this Corvette was indeed the car that Charlton Heston drove on Mulholland in the 70's and early 80's. It is available on ebay right now as Mark said. Good luck bidding.

The article "Thunder Road" by David Barry from New West Magazine became the movie King of the Mountain.
Paperbacks were produced at the time of the movie's debut in 1981 that follow the story exactly.

I'm showing the book here to show that it existed for everyone's enjoyment. Copies of this book are usually very difficult to locate.

Awesome video Jeff. Thanks for posting.
Some of these guys are really hanging it out.
It reminds me of Mulholland about 30 years ago. ;)

Scanned these from a set of six 11x14 theater promo posters I came across a few years back:

Left my share of rubber on Mul, mostly Highway though (grew up in Agoura).

A fine dining experience at the Saddle Ranch this evening with friends and highlighted by Courtney our accomodating and very (distractingly ) cute waitress.

On the drive home the mist was building. A detour through the course brought back many memories of nights like this. The fog was coming and going in waves. One minute it was clear and the next it was pea soup. Three passes back and forth. Couldn't pass it up. Camera close by as always...........

Very light traffic. In fact none at all. I sat at Carls for 15 minutes and not single car passed by. Very silent and peaceful . A night sun was hoisted high above the "MTV House" next to the radio tower for some filming. The fingers of light reaching through the fog added to the experience. Very much reminded me of old times. The only thing missing was the crowds that once gathered around the apex at Carls but the spirit was still there. It has never left.

Did someone die? Awfully quiet around here.

Maybe some black and white pics will bring back some memories of those hot summer nights long ago?
