those photos just made me realize why mulholland at night is instantly recognizable and different from most any other road with similar layout. mulholland at night is the only road i have ever seen where the light source is bright and well below the horizon, giving an eerie backlight effect to the whole area, making it appear as if it's perpetually twilight.

Yes I'll keep the ones on it but will eventually have them polished. I plan to keep them 'cause they are "era correct".

After some distractions, back to it.

Gasket kit has all gaskets for intake and exhaust rocker covers, and bottom strainer/cover gaskets.
Included are all washers, nuts, and aluminum seals.

Cleaned bottom strainer, cover, and installed new gaskets.
Oil return tubes not leaking. Only exhaust rocker covers and bottom strainer were seeping oil.

Inspected oil pump and oil pump pickup for tightness as per Porsche manual.

Parts inside motor look fresh, shiny, and ready to go. Heads and cylinders are clean.
You can see part of the crankshaft and one or two connecting rods up inside the motor.

Cam towers and rockers looked very clean for a 32 year old motor.

I checked side clearance for all rockers with a feeler gauge.
All had side clearance of 0.4 mm give or take 0.05mm. "She's still as fresh as a virgin". ;)

Engine is off of engine stand and is now on engine dolly.
After fuel injection pump installation and timing tomorrow, and after a brief ATF soak for the cylinders, we are ready to re-install the engine.

Looks surprisingly clean in there. Don't forget to check the lower valve covers! I'd consider ditching them for turbo set though. I'd even settle for a used pair.

You might want to double check the torque on the rocker shafts, and if you are feeling brave. check the head studs (very lightly).

However just the thought of playing with a torque wrench on the top end scares the heck out of me. :eek:

I think that before I might re-tighten my head studs, I would rather jump into a pool with a Great White Shark or into a closet with a Grizzly Bear.

Come to think of it, I'd rather drive at 100 plus in heavy traffic on Mulholland.

Of course I would never do any of those things.

The motor's low mileage satisfies me that all is well in the bottom end and in the top end. All that is needed is to re-seal the motor where it leaks (now done), and to repair the fuel system (almost complete). Of course new plugs, points, and a new condenser will be installed along with fuel and oil filters.

Some minor details are also required. Some of which have been completed already like re-polishing the wheels, re-painting the engine compartment, and boiling the fuel tank at a metal stripper.

The M.F.I. Fuel Injection lines looked contaminated, so I removed them from the engine for cleaning.
The Factory manual for Bosch MFI systems says that Chemtool should be blown thru the lines.

You might want to try a little of the Mother's polish on a hidden section of the cadmium plated tin... It may work. I see a few spots that I missed. :rolleyes:
