For those of us that have never used an 8-track... huh?

8 tracks
 

Derek, when a 8 track player is bleeding one track into another, you can temporarily fix it with a book of matches by shoving it under (or over) the inserted tape.

Remember that with 8 tracks you have 4 parallel stereo tracks running together on the same section of tape (4x2=8 tracks). So if the head gets out of alignment, pushing the tape up slightly usually does the trick to get back on track so to speak. ;)

This was one of the reasons that Cassettes replaced 8 tracks, also 8 tracks were bigger in size and required more room to store them.
The big advantage to 8 tracks was that you could switch between 4 different tracks or songs immediately with just a push on the volume control.

Now I realize that I should have kept my 8 track tapes that I collected from 1966 to 1972. I threw them all away in 1973 when cassettes came out, darn it.
Just goes to show that you shouldn't throw anything away.

alternator fix
 

TRE had my original alternator repaired, it looks like new again. Picked it up yesterday afternoon.

THe magnesium housing looks real dirty from many years of waiting for a spruce up. After a light cleaning with fine sandpaper, and blowing it off, it can go together again.

It should be running by Noon today.
Then a test drive to TRE is planned.

Excellent, Chris... it's very cool that you're willing to go to the trouble to shoot pics and let us see the work.

And I would like to send along kudos for just hitting that housing with a light sanding, and not sending it and the fan off to be bead blasted and painted. It just wouldn't seem right to purty it up too much. It's like that weld at the upper trailing edge of the door frames. It speaks to the wonderfully cool, somewhat raw character of the car.

You might wanna take a good look at that belt, though.

(Just kidding... I'm sure you've already checked it out.) :D

Okay, I think the next fun thing to do is get high quality video and sound of you taking off from a full stop and running up through the gears... pulling away from a camera mounted on a tripod sitting at one end of European Straight.

Afternoon Run to TRE
 

Thanks much, and I have a new fan belt that is going in now (thanks for reminding me).

Just got back from TRE and it was fun to visit Dave and Jeremy.
I think they enjoyed seeing the car. Dave sat in the drivers seat and nostalgically remembered sitting in the car back in 1975. I mentioned about things coming full circle.

After Dave and I finish the motion shot, we will do some videos of driving on Mul with the camera both in and outside of the car.
We have been planning this for awhile and we have some fantastic ideas that I think everyone will enjoy seeing.

It is essential to remember that anything that is filmed is considered evidence in a court of law so it is important to never quote speeds or see the speedometer.
We won't be speeding up the film, this will be an accurate representation.

A few details remain that will be addressed today and tomorrow.
They are; shifter bushings, noise in MFI belt?, install fuel puke tank, fix cold start, install front license plate, and fix the numeral "8" on the rear grill (old one fell off).

With the original Porsche License bracket, attatchment is straightforward.

With a little bending of the bracket, the plate can be angled steeply toward the ground making it difficult to read. What a shame.

Fuel ventilation and overflow
 

Fuel tank ventilation has been a simple matter of running the clear hose up and over the brake fluid resevoir.
However, fuel ends up at the base of the battery under hard cornering and accelleration, so a modification was performed this evening.

Up inside the driver's side front fender on a 1974 and later fender are tabs to mount a large overflow tank, also called a puke tank.

Then a fuel small overflow tank from a 1972-1973 911 was used inbetween the gas tank and the large fuel overflow tank.

Porsches on Mulholland
 

Yesterday afternoon a very large tractor trailor pulled into the big turnout just west of Beverly Park. After pulling in behind it, I could see that a new black GT3 RS was being offloaded. This is barely visible in the photo below.

I asked if it was Steve Bernheims car since his house is right behind the trailer in the photo. The driver said that it belonged to Michael...don't remember the last name he stated.

Some time later while at home I saw and heard that Porsche going back and forth on Mulholland doing hot laps.

Anyone know who this is? Just curious.

Tempting...but my wife and I had company over and it might have seemed rude to go play on Mulholland. ;)


It was late afternoon and still plenty of light.


Warm nights are approaching

Carrera back at night
 

It's been over 20 years since the Carrera drove at night on Mulholland.
Tonight was just like old times.

Dave came over at 7:30. We prepared our evening. The car was warmed up for 10 minutes before slowly driving out to Mulholland Drive.
We drove Mulholland east to Beverly Dr, then returned west to Beverly Glen.

Low on fuel so a quick blaze to the 76 station on Ventura and back up to Mul.
It felt like Deja Vu time.

Dave set up his equipment near Deep Canyon.
Then I made runs back and forth on Mulholland.

The unique sound of the Carrera echoed in the hills just like days of old.
It was an exhilerating experience to drive Mulholland again at night.

Ahh, the sweet smell of exhaust...

I realllllly don't make a good passenger :eek:

Chris, ya need to put a few miles on those NEW tires :D.

Other than blinding everyone, it was a good night. The exhaust sounds nice as it approaches and disappears in the distance.
