Hahahahaha!!!

More! More! More!

What's really funny is in that stretch up from Skyline, you don't notice Banning running through the gears lighting up the tires up to 8 grand and the guy in the Z4 laughing hysterically and flashing his lights coming the other way.

Video does not do it justice.

Prep for Mul

Yesterday, before I could drive the car I had to do some final adjustments to the seat belt mounts.
Instructions in the seat belt box told me to just bolt the tabs to the floor or sides of floor just as shown in the upper part of this photo.

Instead I put studs into the floor and bolted the seat belt "end-tabs" to the studs.
I think it's a much safer setup this way, and easier to change out the belts with the studs installed.

Here it is completed.

Prep for Mul

I had to jack the front of the car up in order to install the front suspension cover.
Important to have that cover on as it protects the master cylinder and front fuel lines.
Plus two of the 17mm bolts that hold it on also holds the small struts from the front suspension tube.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1230837493.jpg

Here it is installed.
Note the blue fitting to the left. That's the oil drain plug.

This is interesting.
While finishing up, Dave found this paper under the passenger seat. It's dated April 7, 1998 and it's from Valley College.

I couldn't believe Dave found what I have been looking for, for a long time.
You see, the day that I met my wife, it was a blind date that I didn't want to go on really. So to have some fun anyway I decided to drive the Carrera.

I took Jane to Valley College to just walk around and talk. I stopped in the Circular Walkway for a moment and picked up one of the free LAVC papers located in the Kiosk.

I read that a favorite teacher that I knew had passed away and it made me sad to hear this news. I kept the paper for sentimental reasons but lost it soon thereafter.
Dave found that paper 20 years, 8 months later under the Recaro. I must have put it there to keep it from blowing around. He has a talent for finding things. Thanks Dave.

The two weeks are finally over

Dave followed me to the Racecourse.
It was later in the afternoon so there was considerable traffic.

The odometer is visible. Only 4400 miles on a 33 year old car. Not bad. And no, the speedo has never been disconnected. Those are almost all Mulholland miles.

Here we are waiting for the green light at lower Coldwater.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1230839502.jpg

A long time coming...
Here we are at Deadmans once again, many years later.

Dave and Derek at the Deadmans overlook.

Once back home, it felt great to have driven on Mulholland again in the Carrera.
I can't express my appreciation enough to Derek for starting this incredible thread (thanks Pelican), and to all of you who have given your input on everything Mulholland.

Also to Dave, Jeff, Kevin, Dave B., Jeremy, and my friend Nick for helping me to prepare for this day. Much gratis.
Lastly, thanks to my wife Jane for putting up with my nutty behavior for over 20 years.

It's been a fun and rejuvinating experience to make new friends, go out on Mulholland and meet (even though it's been awhile), and also to learn thru this thread about everyone's experiences on Mulholland Drive.

Cheers!

Happy New Year!

...see you on Mulholland... ;)

Thanx to all the "Mulholland Group" for making this thread a success. It's great to see that grey ghost make it back to it's playground. It really does look like it's smiling in a few of those pics. And the look and smile on Chris's face is incredibly contagious.

It sucks to be stuck on the other coast and not experiencing this first hand, but at least we get to live vicariously through this thread. Thanx again.

Off the east end of Mulholland is "Forest Lawn Drive". The locals should know this road as well as Mul. Does anyone have any recollections from back in the days of a group known as "River Road Racing Assoc."?

Excellent... glad to see "a good time was had by all" during the first outing... especially the guy in the Z4. :)

Dave, you had some concerns about those tires, eh? :D

Very cool photo of Dave and Derek reflected in the paint at Deadman's.

Chris, does this 30-day permit allow you to only drive on Mulholland... or anywhere in CA?

I'm thinking a visit to The Road to Nowhere might be fun. ;)

The car can be driven anywhere legally for 30 days to allow time for smog certification to be done.

That reference to only driving on Mulholland is really a joke that my friends have tormented me with for years since that's the only place I'll take it.

Today I repaired the brake lights on the Carrera.
It was too dangerous to drive to TRE on Jan 1 with no brake lights, that's why I couldn't show.

I also ordered new front and rear Porsche Brake Pads, from where? From Pelican Parts.
Plus a new fan belt just to be on the safe side. The one on there now is 32 years old. :D

A few other details remain. Tires, Tail, Plates, polish/wax, glass fixed, and a couple more finishing touches are left.

Bad ground? Relay?

Jeff Hailpern came over today and helped me to diagnose the turn signals.
We burned thru a half a dozen 15 amp fuses.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1231043238.jpg

Jeff is tracing wires from the fuse block.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1231043259.jpg

We both were under similar 911's comparing the wire location of the emergency flasher. This seemed to be the problem.

Turn signal diagnose

Jeff just finished giving me the thumbs up just before this photo. ;)

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1231043686.jpg

We determined that it is probably the fault of a bad ground and a bad relay.
When the emergency flasher is pushed in (off position) the brake light fuse blows and the flasher ticks, otherwise no response from the turn signals.

Thanks Jeff for assisting in fixing the emergency flasher/turn signal switch. Just a little more to get it fixed right.
The horn, headlights, parking lights, brake lights, and instument lights are working fine.

Yaaay!

Love that vid.

I've been following this thread since Waa-aa-ay back. Even though I am all the way accross the country, and my Mulholland experience was a rental Kia, I knew that car would get back "home." Ahhhhh. Well done, Fellas.

Banning 01-05-2009 06:44 PM

That was a fast delivery from Pelican Parts. I bet it's the new fan/cooling belt.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1231213384.jpg

In preparation for driving the car today, a few more details were attended to. Each time the car is prepped for driving, more repairs are completed.
Fuel is leaking from the filler cap. An old gasket is probably to blame. I remember cutting this one out 32 years ago.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1231213402.jpg

The reason that the big VW filler cap is welded onto the Porsche gas tank is to facilitate getting into the tank with an arm.
It also is nice to have the original filler door smoothed off on the outside surface of the car for looks and for cutting wind resistance.
