He bought a bushing kit from Dick and made his own simple mudflaps.... er flares by radiusing the wheel wells to accomodate the 13" wide rear mags, then pop riveting on black painted alu sheet to keep John Law happy. They were not happy with the open side pipes or slicks fitted, so hence his wise decision not to stick around parked up there.

I think i outlined the story earlier of a couple of us CRE regulars trying to stay with charley in the RAIN up there one night. Full slicks and he wasted us in the tight stuff

In early 1962, Corvette Chief Engineer Zora Arkus Duntov began top secret work on a Corvette purpose-built race car to win Sebring and Le Mans and more specifically -- to put an end to the humiliating losses Chevrolet had suffered at the hands of Carrol Shelby and his Cobras.

The envisioned Grand Sport would be the ultimate Corvette, a lightweight, tremendously powerful factory built racer. Mounted with a 377cid small block with Weber side-draft carburetors, it dynoed at 550hp at 6400rpm and was designed to blow the hoods off Shelby's Cobras. And if the Ferraris and Ford GT 40's were also left in the dust, so much the better.

After the prototypes had proven their mettle -- and metal -- 125 production street beasts were to be unleashed. But it never happened...

When they learned of Zora's secret program, the Chevrolet boardroom put a stop to the car's construction -- but they couldn't stop the five Grand Sports already built. And neither could the competition. From 1963 to 1967, the cars tore up the racetracks. And even after that, they continued to see duty and put up an excellent showing at races around the country and even overseas.

The Grand Sport Corvette was the inspiration for the Infamous Mulholland Corvette that Charley Woit built and raced to be the fastest on that famous Drive.

Further back, after overcoming some pre and early race difficulties, yours truly (CRE), partnered with a couple friends in a navy blue 993 gt2 LOOK (really an sc with a 3.6 in it) started 34th (dead and i mean dead! last) and pedaled our way up to 13th by the time the checker flew.

Though not run in usual to us (darn ;) ) night time with cars coming the other way :D, we all adapted quite well to the high speed circuit and proved that even generations later, the HILL's inspiration is alive and well

We won our class in unlimited, but actually lost a top ten on the last lap when an RSR that had earlier problems unlapped itself knocking us down to 11th O/A. Not dissapointed in the slightest, those were pretty much all cup cars and a few RSR's ahead of our 180 h.p. 986. We had to pedal at quali speed for the whole race to get there. It was funny to see some guys running GT3's falling out of their cars after 50 min stints- with cool suits!. We ran nearly 2hrs each I lost eight pounds:eek:. Another Mul grad, Lance Stewart drove his butt off with Carl T in the handicapped and finished up there..

some hints: It was shot on Mulholland and was presaged by a trio of friends filming themselves playing on Mul, in the three of the same model race cars as the soap. But they never crashed :)

Actually we have a couple winners, as i made an error. Yes, the California Spider was part of the three amigos having fun on Mul, and so were two GTOs in the friendly home movies.

Not close on the evening SOAP opera title yet, but the GTO's are a major clue

I bet it's Falcon Crest... there are a lot more mountain roads in CA than in TX. :D

Private Race Track

This is an invitation to a private Racetrack that I received yesterday. I didn't know that there were "private tracks" for auto enthusiasts, Wow!

Does anyone know if one exists locally? If not, there should be one. After all this is Southern California where the weather is great and fast cars abound.

This event is for Ferrari Owners Club members and some friends who are on our list of exotic car enthusiasts....please join us for a very special private track day at Monticello Motor Club....for those who are not familiar, this is a PRIVATE country club / race track which is not typically open to the public....we are getting exclusive access to the club on June 19th for the day (a weekend day, not mid-week)....whether you are a first time driver on the track or a seasoned veteran, you are welcome to join us....we will have professional racecar drivers available to teach the novice drivers (not enthusiasts who just teach as a hobby)....MMC was built to be one of the premier private motor tracks in the world....we’ll run the 4.1 mile full course, among the longest, safest, most challenging tracks in the East, with a total of 22 turns, including hairpins, increasing and decreasing radius corners, laid out over thrilling elevation changes. At the end of the day, a driver will have over 3 hours of track time!

We are taking reservations on a first come, first serve basis. We can only take 30 cars, however we can handle more spectators who just want to come for lunch and to watch the event. The prices on the attachment include breakfast, lunch, a Ferrari racing shirt, a Ferrari hat, and all track activities. We have attached an invitation but here are the basics:

8am - Meet at 212 Taconic Road for breakfast and to gather cars for rally

8:45am - Rally through the country to MMC (you can meet us directly at MMC if that's more convenient for you)

11am – 11:30: TECH of cars going on track

11:30 - 12: Checkout rides for solo candidates

12 - 1pm: Lunch, presentation

1 - 1:15pm – Solo drivers prepare for track

1:15 - 2pm – Open Track for Solo drivers

1 - 2pm – Beginners in classroom

2 - 2:40 – Beginners on track, Solo drivers have track classroom discussion

2:45 - 3:30 – Open Track (solo drivers), Beginners in classroom

3:40 – 4:20 – Beginners on track

4:30 – 5pm – Open Track (solo drivers)

5 – 5:30 – Open track all cars (if beginners are ready and with approval of instructor to all run together)

Yes, it's a long drive to this Private Track. That's why I was asking if we had a Private Track like that here in Southern California.

Sorry. I had a brain fart and missed that part of your post.

There's been an explosion of private country club type race tracks around the country, I have noticed. It's like building a golf course and the home sites around it. Instead it's a race track, instead of a golf course. Earlier this year Road & Track magazine had a two-issue story on driving an Audi R8 cross-country and visiting 8 or 10 of these places.

I don't know of any of these places in California. The closest one I know of is Spring Mountain in Pahrump (by Las Vegas). Buttonwillow and Willow are privately-owned tracks, correct?

Hillclimber Project

On a side note, I saw this VW Bug last week in Yucca Valley. It's someone's project. Maybe the guy hopes to have the hillclimber of all time when he's done. ;)

In any case it looked big and creative. Weird projects/artwork can be fun and entertaining.

Chris, I think that Spring Mountain in Pahrump NV is the closest "country club" racetrack to California. Of course, Thunderhill up in Willows, CA is also kind of a "country club" circuit. It was built by the S.F. Region of the S.C.C.A. and only hosts non-spectator events.
