Oh Baby that looks good!! So Derek, how does it handle? Can you shake that black car on the Mul?

KevinP73 10-16-2007 08:21 AM

I was at the news stand at Van Nuys and Ventura last night about 7:30. A black/white cruiser flew past with lights and sirens on headed uphill. I thought to myself "the boys must be up on the hill playin"!! They've got to be following this thread.

I've been feeling a little under the weather actually, so I didn't get a whole lot of seat time last night. Plus, I'd like to get these tires scrubbed in a bit.

I'm not worried about the black car.;)
Just that beast from Hell he calls a street car.

Regretfully, at 7:30 I was popping ibuprofen and zicam and staring blankly into my TV.

Hey Derek
its going to take a while burning in the new rubber, but the car looks terrifice with its new shoes!

Thanks Dave. That's what I figured about the tires.
If I can manage it, I'll stop by before you close so you guys can check them out and maybe rattle your brains about potential clearance issues.

Hey Dave,

Unfortunately, I don't have any photos from Willow. My camera was stolen that weekend. The camera wasn't worth much but the film was sure priceless!

However, I recently stumbled across this.......

Is that Dave B. standing next to a Gulf 917?
I know you've owned some pretty crazy cars over the years, but I have to figure you're just posing next to this one?

TRE Cup 10-17-2007 11:13 AM

argh! do i look like a nerd , or what!?

yep- a pretty well known 917 that was owned by Otis Chandler at that time, who had bought it from Solar Productions (aka THAT #20 917 from a certain movie......)
Dan Mc Gloughlin's A.I.R. was the locale for the shot. Dan is one of the coolest people around when it came to "holding court" at his shop. We got to sit in this car, touchy feely and all that. It was there for a light body resto and paint.
I have a couple other shots that should be scanned and posted for posterity. Chuck Kendall ended up with the car for a while- it ran at Monterey historics, then Otis had it back for a bit, then it ended up with Bruce Mc Caw from PNW area- raced a LOT in vintage, then some porsche collecting comedian ended up with it; I don't remember his name..... LOL

I think the primered and wide fendered 914-6 to my right could be Harold Von Keczeki's (sp?) original GT . Harold was constantly having fun with his GT modifying it to accept a full on turbo motor and huge AIR kit. There are some pics of it all painted in GT trim complete with huge boat inlet scoops on the rear deck

Two things I remember about that car. The ignition key (yes it had one!) had about a dozen little holes drilled in the head to reduce weight! On the door sill right behind the gearshift was like a 3x5 index card taped to the sill with typewritten instructions that began "How to start the Porsche 917....."

Hahaha!

1. Turn Key
2. Hold on for 24 hrs.
3. Stop
4. Spray Champaign

KevinP73 10-17-2007 12:52 PM

That was one of the cars in the shop when I first started working for McLoughlin but something in the picture leads me to believe it's NOT the shop in Burbank.

TRE Cup 10-17-2007 01:19 PM

u r wrong kevin- that was the shop on santa anita. other pics of me and the 917 show the length of the bldg and that white/blue porsche audi sign hanging from one of the beams

I guess it just goes to show how "imperfect" our memory can be. I don't remeber the walls being painted like that. Did you have your shop (current shop on Chandler) when that picture was taken?

TRE Cup 10-17-2007 05:42 PM

nope- i was still going to school and using my parent's home garage to work on cars. The pic above was a looong time ago way before Dan had the spray booth, tile floor , or mezzanine

Hey Dave nice to have you back on the thread. I cannot believe that picture is really you. You turned into a fine young man!

I have some pics of Harold K's 914. The initial build and the morph into the final ultimate killer. There is a great story behind this car. Harold was one to never stop tinkering. Harold was quite resourceful when it came to pumping air into a cylinder and quite the experimenter with turbos in the early days. I think the final HP rating's on the 914 before he gave it up were around 900 ponies.

The early build:
Judging by the blackout/ shadeband on the windshield it's the same car.
This photo was taken at Willow Springs.

The Monster

I am checking. I know I have an article on it somewhere.

The car started out with an interesting pedigree. It started out as Erwin Kremer's Le Mans winning '70 914-6 GT. (Kremer Bros)

The 930 was the inspiration to home design and assemble a turbo system for a 3 liter 911 pump injected engine, yielding 700+ HP at 2 bar boost.

Garret Turbo, aircraft surplus inter-cooler and oil coolers, custom bellowed and wrapped stainless steel exhaust system,

Formula 1 water mist cooled brakes, 12x16/15x16 BBS wheels. Fiberglass body by Danny McLoughlin of AIR, Burbank, CA.

Fabrication, wing, and welding by John Mason, Van Nuys, CA.

Even Ferry Porsche was involved. Thats him giving his nod of approval of the engine.

I found the article . I will post it in a second or two........
