Here's one from April. The stitching on the left did not work out right, but it's a nice shot anyway. Taken at Deadman's.

Now the disparagers and flamers will be posting here too :D

Seriously, you have to pick the day of the week and roads as the central coast is insanely busy with tourist season in full swing.

Imagine thousands of wine tasters (they are driving with full capacity and concentration , right?), hundreds of cyclists (motorized and n.a. powered, and throw in the boat enthiasts towing over a lot of these roads. Be careful and choose wisely

Dave, thanks again for putting that route from LA to SLO together. That was the most fun that I've had for a long time. I was amazed that for 45 minutes at a time we were driving pretty much flat out and only seeing one or two cars, what a great drive. My whole mindset of California being overcrowded is completely shot.

After that great weekend I had to drop Tom (racemor) at LAX Sunday morning at 9am and had the rest of the day to explore LA until my redeye flight at 11:30 pm back to RI. Because of this thread, I figured that there was no way I was going to miss my opportunity to drive Mulholland. I managed to drive from the 405 to the 101 and back ... twice. Traffic was light and I had an absolute blast in the 350Z rental car. What really amazes me is that out there people will see a rapidly approaching car and....they pull over and let you by! This does not happen on the East Coast. I can see that I'm going to have to make it out there more often just to drive those amazing roads. You guys that live out there don't know how lucky you are.

If only I had known the road better, I would have pulled off at Deadman's Curve and had a moment for Jan and Dean.:D

Actually the Jan and Dean song "Deadmans Curve" was a reference to the curve at Sunset Blvd just east of Doheny at the intersection of Phyillis.

Ironically the song — and especially this final verse — proved eerily prophetic two years later. On 12 April 1966, 25-year-old Jan Berry crashed his Corvette Stingray into the back of a parked truck on a side street in Beverly Hills.

Jan Berry's Corvette after the crash (not pretty):
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1179637504.jpg

Other references to "Deadmans Curve" aside from our famous Mulholland Drive are:

1)Commonly mistaken east of Laurel Cyn and the Firestation between Dona Pegita and Wrightwood to many people. Then again it is a Deadman's drop if you go over at this location.
2) Sunset Blvd at Amalfi and Sunset at Palisades Drive.
3)Sunset behind Drake Stadium at UCLA where Mel Blanc (voice of Bugs Bunny and a host of other characters) wiped out in 1961. I remember reading something like 26 fatalities in a two year span happened at this location. The city finally recut the slope of the road and added more banking. Its still challenging at speed.

I was fortunate to meet both Jan Berry and Dean Torrance at a benefit concert at Devonshire Downs in 1981. Even know they didnt play they got a standing ovation from the punk rock band Black Flag. Still cool after so many years. Rest in peace Jan.

Some trivia humor. When Jan and Dean were attending University High School they were into cars like most guys were at the time. The car club they were in was called the "Belaire Bandits". When they started playing again in the late 70's they changed the name from Jan and Dean to the Belaire Bandits. Sounds kind of Mulholland-ish to me?

----"Well - the last thing I remember, Doc, I started to swerve
And then I saw the Jag slide into the curve
I know I'll never forget that horrible sight
I guess I found out for myself that everyone was right"----

Wowee Jeff, what a wealth of information. I didn't know they went to Uni and raced with the Bellaire Bandits. I went to Uni and raced with a similar group near Belair and Mulholland. It's a small world isn't it?
I have loved Jan and Deans songs since they came on the radio. The Beach Boys were also a favorite and still are. That was a great time to be alive in America.

Jim Garfield 05-20-2007 08:14 AM

Thanks Jeff, interesting stuff.

I had a lot of fun driving around LA and seeing places that I recognized from songs or movies. On my meandering drive I must have gone by the Deadman's Curve from the song as I drove the length of Sunset Blvd. out to the ocean. I was amazed how winding it is west of Beverly Hills. I must have lucked that Sunday as the traffic was very light everywhere that I drove.

Driving up Angeles Crest Highway at the start of the drive to SLO was pretty spectacular too. I'm going to have to take a couple extra days next time that I'm out that way, to drive more of those canyon roads. The 350Z was ok but next time I'll try to rent a Cayman.;)

Man, I loved those early days of IMSA.

One big family. They feed us, gave us free drinks and then
paid us to race. Can't get any better than that.

A years after ReeNo faded I ran into a guy in the Bay Area

Wright.

Nothing like waiting 10 years to find out you've been "had".

You are welcome. It would have been great if you had caught up to us at the diner in Temecula. A combination of some of those roads is a terrific 1 day round trip
A lot of those roads are what we used on the Iron Bottom Rally- well worth your while to join in next spring if you have a pre 1975 car (facsimile there of- hey 911s up to 89 look like a 75 carrera right?)
You will have a wonderful and silly smile at the end of 3 days

Very unfortunate. One reason CRE stayed on the 'car section'
and left the far end and their beloved "rock store" to the bike guys.

Dereks thread has become an epic still growing.

News of camera's being installed.

I do not race on Mulholland anymore. Nothing to worry about.

But I will bet a dollar any camera on Mulholland will not be long lived..........

........smile and say cheese

Bullwinkle had one of these for a few months and ran it on
the Hill. Transverse leaf springs in front. He hit the dip
at Grandstands ripped the eye out of the leaf spring then
spun 360's all the way down to the fire hydrant. Never hit a thing! Probably had Rocky with him for ballast. Oh, yeah he had full slicks on the thing at the time.

Home built deal as he added all the parts from PBS. Even had the rear deck lid up and flying.

I do remember that I didn't use seat belts to drive the wagon's. That sounds nuts today, but then we drank water out of garden hoses back then, too. It wasn't until it became law that I used seat belts. Ya had to hold onto the drip rail with the left hand and steer with the right. But let me tell you that wagon was very fast ..... down hill..... Flat on it into the 3-point sweeper then BIG pitch into Carl's

If anyones curiosity has been peeked by "Chariot Races" just remember that '74 GM wagons had a "Clam Shell" tail gate and one "could" roll up the rear window into the roof and leave the tailgate up. This allowed one (or three) to stand up and hold onto the roof rack and...............well, since I was driving I can only imagine. Now Pat, Deucer & Cortez all drove the Chariot. So, I'll let them tell you what that was like.................Boys......? RSVP?

Guilty.

SHAMELESS SELF PROMOTION. GEEZ, MARK.

TRE Cup 05-21-2007 04:53 PM

Ah well... Too bad most of the other NASCAR racers that day didn't know how to street race. If the event was destined to die soon, it really died after the THREE HOUR LIVE BROADCAST of winston west's finest bashing a wall , blocking the course every 2 laps!!! It was AGONY !
Our PRO Racing group had lots of tape indexed, ready to broadcast instead of all that "LIVE ACTION" (ARGH!) during the yellow flag periods watching cars caravan around at 25 mph . But then again, we are not Nascar, eh?

What was it ? 2.5 hours of yellow flag with a 1/2 hour of racing sprinkled in here and there?

Mark, and all the other Nascar racers that knew what turning right and left meant, never got a chance to show real racing that weekend;)
