Reasoned argument is the spice of life. Occasionally I argue counter to what I believe because no one is willing to argue that point.

Keep it impersonal. Argue with supporting facts. Defend your position with reasoned argument.

Grady, I'll probably be hitting the tech board a bit more in the spring/summer as I have resolved to do an engine rebuild on my SC--mainly for the experience. My plan is to buy a drivable early 911 to use as my DD while the SC is up on blocks.

I wouldn't even attempt to try something like a rebuild without this bb.

+1. Grady's on the mark but I would add "use some humor" when you can. Don't let "them" get under your skin....like I have occasionally. Its only someone's opinion and as they say, everyone has one and they all stink.

Yes, … well you can see where I spend my time - 911 Technical. OT is for the feeling to be socially responsible. The few OT that I participate in, I think I make a difference outside the Forum. The current Strickland thread is one. Science fair another.

I’ll be glad to help with the SC. That is easy. There is a LOT on Pelican – use search and make yourself a manual. I recommend you buy an early 911 Factory Workshop Manual (’65-’83), Dempsey, Bentley and other. Having multi-source information is desirable.

Part of life is Porsche and another is social responsibility. Pelican OT is remarkably responsible.

For the most part, people are good about the whole "what happens in OT stays in OT", in that you could have a fierce argument or even a flame war with someone here (esp. in a political thread) and say really nasty things, but they may also be quick to jump in the tech forum to help you with a question or problem. This has happened to me more than once.

Very good. I wish I had more “humor” skills. My lame (engineering and science) skills lead me to just logic.

Every Sunday dinner with my grandfather (editor of the Princetonian and friend of Woodrow Wilson), we had argument around the table as early as I can remember. I was brought up understanding the value of argument and encouraged to participate from a very young age. The term “argument” has perhaps missed the meaning today.

With Pelican OT I’m comfortable arguing a point. Any one of us should be able to argue either side of the Iraq controversy. I can.

It is the argument process that can possibly lead to a solution to the issue. Even some of our elected “representatives” don’t seem to understand this IMHO. (opinion)

Well Mr Clay U seem like a straight forward type of guy. I to use the term "argument" to mean presenting your position and will present positions that don't represent my own beliefs. However I am not very orthodox I'm afraid, and will come at U from a myriad of directions. With me U might want to carry a mirror as I will take U through the looking glass. I was just gaining acceptance on the Charlie Rose Board, before he folded it, and have gotten an e-mail through to him. Ohhh my my its late and I have to go now...

Grady, I agree except that I would use the term "discussion" - but I suppose that is semantics when the discussion gets empassioned.

I think the current (?) term for this approach is "brainstorming". Discuss things from all points of view. Throw out unusual, at times even outrageous solutions for thorny problems, kick 'em around and see what sticks to the wall. Doesn't sound nearly as academic as what the editor of the Princetonian and Woodrow Wilson would do, but I suppose it can result in the same outcome.

As for the humor part? Besides it being entertaining (assuming you're not offended by the joke!) it has the added value of (perhaps) lightening up the moment and reminding us its all just opinion and to not take ourselves so seriously. As I have posted before , its HIGHLY unlikely that someone with an opposing point of view to mine is going to sit up suddenly and say, "My Dan, I never thought of it in QUITE that way. I am changing my opinion on (fill in the blank - abortion, capital punishment, term limits, etc) forever!" Yeah, that'll happen!

Believe it or not, that's happened to me once or twice in here. I don't remember if it was you or not, but I've been in a few arguments on here where I haven't been firmly planted on one side of the issue or another and someone's raised a few points I didn't know about, or a different viewpoint, that made me reconsider my position.
