Looking for milk

Hey....I am looking for brands of Milk that feed their cows naturally...not doping them up with Hormones and Anti-Biotics.

did you know that in 1923, Dairy cows only produced 1 Gal of milk...in 1998, they were up to 6 Gal a day.

and now more than ever are prone to Mastitis.

Hmmm, what's worse, cows with inflammed boobs or 6 times the number of belching/farting bovine contributing to global warming?

Tough one.

Don't get me wrong, I'd rather have my food as natural as possible but there is no such thing as a free lunch. It's gonna cost you one way or the other.

BTW, There are 1.4 billion cows worldwide, each producing 500 litres of methane a day and accounting for 14% of all emissions of the gas.

Saw some free range organic whole milk at The Fresh Market (new upscale grocery here in town), but it was very expensive. See if you have a whole foods store near you.

give up cow milk and buy soy milk--a damn sight better for you. buy the no sugar kind, which is richest and tastes the best, or the chocolat, which is excellent.

But I have not drank a glass of milk for probably 30 years--it truly disgusts me. For cereal, tea, i use soy milk. I really don't care if it's better for you or not, it doesn't gross me out.

^^ JW's theory sure has my vote. If the girls in my HS had looked like the girls do today, I'd have been a lot more "active".

Are you saying that's a bad thing? I'm actually a bit conflicted on that point.

Women should be careful of Soy products since they can mimic estrogen.

I think I may have heard that. Do they have to consume 1000 gallons per day to affect their hormones or some reasonble amount?

I have seen studies funded by the american dairy board which state the evils of soy; and, I've also seen studies from the soy lobby which state the evils of cow's milk.

hard to figure out the truth, there, so I just end up doing what I like. J

My wife was drinking 8-12 ounces per day and it expanded her uterine fibroid greatly. It shunk from grapefruit size to golf ball size less than 6 months after discontinuing soy milk.

Thanks for this, sincerely. My wife doesn't drink more than .5-2 oz per day in her coffee but my 7 year old drinks about 8oz of the chocolate milk daily. While I suspect you didn't stay the night at a Holiday Inn Express last night, do you think she is in any danger? I'll do some research on it, as well but I do appreciate the anecdotal heads-up.

Jack

Truely, I have no idea. It was detrimental to my wife, but people are different. Many of the things that are supposed to be really bad or really good for you turn out to be neither, or are exaggerated.

Most groceries are carrying Organic Milk now... and it truly tastes better, imo.

adults don't really need the nutrition found in cow's milk. you can get your calcium in other ways just as well.

Yes, especially if you are female.

Or male...in some cases..

I remember some city cousins visiting us on the farm (and this was almost 50 years ago) saying "we want store milk, we don't like cow milk".

To echo Sonic, you can get organic milk in most stores now. I am pretty sure hormones are not used in those cows. Not sure about antibiotics.

Read "The omnivores dilemma", it will make you think about food in general a lot diffferently.
