Back when I was a liberal (a bona fide living-in-San Francisco Democrat), liberals supported freedom and opposed oppression. Today's liberals have strange bedfellows.

Osama bin Laden is the new Che Guevara.

liberal wording can be misconstrued. The revolutionary baby boomers morphed into responsibile society.

the clueless have only revolution to relate to without the responsibility of a future. Iran is the current best example followed by the far left. They are in a constant state of tension. Tension breeds fear. Fear breeds hate.

Every conservative I know, including myself, was a liberal at one time. We have not changed. Liberalism has. It has become a parody of itself.

I was a conservative. Go figure. Actually, what's in a name? A rose, by any other name, would smell as sweet. There has been a hijacking of the definition of the term "liberal." If I thought it really meant losing your mind and supporting the forces of oppression and control, I wouldn't be calling myself a liberal. To paraphrase Rearden, I support freedom and oppose oppression. That's the way it's always been and the way it will continue to be. Don't be fooled by the Republican Party's new, strategic and purposeful, caricaturization of liberal thinking. If you do, you'll be supporting oppression and opposing freedom.

I've got a serious question. What is a 'liberal' and what is a 'conservative'? Depending upon the topic at hand, I fall into both categories (as do most people I know), so I get confused. If someone were to list a bunch of topics, I could state where I stand, but my positions would probably be split (almost equally) between both 'sides' depending on the subject matter. In general, I'm very conservative fiscally, but would be considered a liberal on many social issues. Please help me find my "label"

it's a timing in history issue concerning Lib vs Cons.

Same with terms Rep vs Dem. Parties shift over time.

Thanks for teeing this ball up perfectly. Fact is, the similarities between us FAR outweigh the differences. We are all Americans and if you believe the 'other guys' are treacherous terrorists, you've been listening to the Party lines too much.

Nearly everyone I know is a fiscal conservative. The vast majority are also at least somewhat socially liberal. Nobody wants tax money squandered. Almost nobody is dumb enough to actually believe it would be in our best interest to turn our backs on the less fortunate in society.

This perception that there is a vast ideological rift in America is deliberately cultivated for the purpose of accumulating power. We are being deliberately made to fight against one another for purposes of greed. That should give you an idea of what I think of Dubya and Mr. Rove's loyalty to my country.

This may be a stretch for the age group that populates this board, but I've heard JF Kennedy as a Democrat was much more conservative than any conservative today. Is that true?

his economic policies would be considered conservative in todays world. I think many of Bush's policies are socialism and so screwed up those policies were only used as bargining chips and destined to blow up anyway.

JFK was not as conservative as today's bible thumpers imo.
