How many stars?

I'm really not making a new thread here...just waiting for stars. Let's see...subject material: Rifle guys, which is the better caliber? 7mm Remington Mag or .300 Winchester mag? Seems like a tossup to me...7mm flys better, .300 carries more weight out there...I'm talking going for large game, North American continent...

I would say to shoot both (if you can) and make a decision. Both have their pros in making a clean kill, but you may find one works better for you.

I'd love to offer you a zero star rating, but alas, Wayne hasn't provided us with that option yet.

.300 Winchester mag any day. They excell with 200 grain bullets, which will match the ballistic coefficeint of any 160-175 grain 7mm bullet.

I hunted with the 7mm Remington mag for a number of years, taking a few deer and pronghorn. I honestly could not see where it wouldn't do anything my old '06 couldn't. You did not include the old warhorse on your list, but of the three, I would choose it. There is simply not enough difference in real world performance between it and any medium bore magnum to justify the added noise, recoil, and cost of the 7mm or .300 mags.

To me, real "magnums" start with the old .375 H&H and go up from there. If I'm going to put up with all the noise, recoil, and cost of a "magnum", I'm going to want to see a significant gain in real-world performance. That generally comes more through bullet weight and diameter than velocity. I'm nothing but impressed with the .375 H&H; I've taken deer, pronghorn, elk, and caribou with it. The 300 grain Sierra boat tail shoots as flat at normal hunting ranges as my 180 grain '06 loads, and hits very noticably harder.

By the way, I gave you one star just for the hell of it. I hate these gun threads.

Agree with Jeff. The old 30.06 is a wonderful round, been around forever and a vast collection of rifles chambered for this caliber.

The .300 mag is a nice round but do you really need it and is it worth the extra cost for ammo?

That's "hand-wringing ninnie" to you, son. Geez. Show some respect.
