Not that I like it, but Windows Mobile is on .. . .has been on all kinds of gagets for some time.

Apparently 'hype' = 'truth' in some regions.

This reply typed on my WM WiFi phone, btw. (just for you) http://www.htc.com/

Crap, I should have.

From the WSJ this morning:

APPLE LOPPED $200 off the iPhone price, causing its shares to fall 5.1%. Apple also revamped its iPods to include Wi-Fi and a touchscreen.

Oh, Microsoft's not sleeping. That's why they announced a $50 drop in Zune pricing during the Apple presentation yesterday -- which of course. completely stole the thunder from Jobs.

And of course, they completely dominated the market a couple years back with their "plays for sure" strategery.

Plus, there's a huge surge of widespread support for Vista now that people have had some time to adopt it.

Things just couldn't be better for Microsoft.

No matter what Jobs says, they must not be selling enough or the price wouldn't have gone down so fast. Phones are a tough market. My old Razr slid in price pretty quickly too....

I have an iPhone, but was too cool to buy mine that first Friday night....and so bought it the next afternoon! Up until that time I had waited with my Razr and felt OK. Windows mobile and Palm OS were on some Treos and such things, but they never really seemed worth the price. You "could" do things - email, web, etc. - but it looked like too much trouble when I could just wait an hour to be near one of my computers. But the iPhone? My 5 year old grasps enough to make music play on the iPhone. It really works nicely, though it is like the olden days of the mid- to late 1990's with the web sometimes - OK in a pinch, but the 3G iPhone will be welcome, as will a little more memory (16GB should be fine, 32 more than enough).

The iPhone saved me a couple of times on a trip to London the week of July 4th, and was worth the price I paid. I don't feel the $200. But I was already with Cingular/AT & T, and the whole thing was pretty painless. I wouldn't have spent $600 on a new and untested machine unless I could afford it, and felt that it offered me some valuable advance over what I had. Large advances only come every 4-5 years. The Palm VII and/or Blackberry was one, the iPod another.

The iPhone is like that. It helps my business life and life-life, and was worth the price I paid. They are better deals at $399, and should be at $199 to be a totally clear choice.

Technology changes and evolves. I remember getting a Zenith 181 laptop with 640k and two 3.5" DD disk drives for $1,000 or so (a 30%-50% student discount at UCSD) in 1987 or 1988. I remember thinking "who on earth would need the Zenith 183 with the 20MB hard drive? That is such an insane amount of space, you could never use it!" LOL. If we are still surprised by constantly greater features and constantly lower prices, then we just aren't paying attention to how things ARE today....

Um, Nokia E70 anyone?

I don't see what the iPhone hype is all about, but then, I don't have an iPod either...

. . . snip . . .
This is certainly one of many possibilities.

Another is that Apple is taking a stab at market share over margins; maybe Jobs has learned from historical mistakes where margin was put ahead of market share? Some would argue that this single issue has crippled Apple in the past and kept it in its niche. Lower pricing before the holiday season could create a significant buying frenzy.

Also, the iPhone and iPod family have many overlapping features which creates some pricing problems. The iPhone had to be reconciled pricing wise with the Touch.

The new iPhone price also leaves a pretty big hole at the top. To me, it looks like a new flagship iPhone is on its way, with at least 16GB (see Touch) and maybe 3G (see overseas markets).

Of course it's possible iPhones are not selling well and the price cut is because of this, but I seriously doubt it. The proof will be in the proverbial pudding when hard numbers are announced.

My bet is that iPhone numbers are at or above Apple's projections and iPhone will prove to have had an historical launch with unprecedented market share gains in a very short period of time. And the folks with no "dog in the fight" will continue to be bothered.

Best,

Kurt

I've got to ask you early iPhone buyers; How do ya like them Apples?

I love my Iphone, as I told you the other night. It does more than I anticipated. I have saved a ton of minutes with the phone's voice message feature. Not $200 worth, but some. Am I upset that the price went down? No, because I am happy with the phone.

Oh, and I am not one of those Ismug people you talk about. I bought the phone a month after they were out; after I researched phones enough.

I am happy for those people who will get the phone at the new price. Buy it, you will like it!

Exactly, Rick.

That is what is so fascinating about apple zealots. They wet their pants, and then act all smug, for technology that has been around for years. I mean, I still have my old (thiner than an iPhone) visor Edge PDA. I never got the phone module for it, but the point is, stuff like a thin touch-screen cmptr/phone is nothing new. (old, like w/ a B&W LCD)

I'm sure the i-Zealots will wet their pants again when the 'new' 'flagship" iPhone is dangled in front of the choir with this crazy new "cut & paste" technology. Maybe you will pinch to cut, and lobster-claw open to paste. ....that makes it "new" and uniquely apple . . .which makes it better, of course.

Scooter, you're going to have to notch it up a bit to be accepted by the i-church.

I'm not saying the i-Phone is a terrible product. It -is- a good product. ....just not that good. It's just another/different mix of features.

Early adopters of technology, or those folks on the "bleeding edge" always want the latest electronic doodad and don't mind paying extra for it. For the "mainstream folks", the price has to drop until we're willing to buy the technology...

No, you misunderstood my post. I never wrote that you said the i-Phone was a terrible product. I merely wrote that I am happy with it. I don't really care what other's say. I am happy with the features. I am not saying the i-phone is the best phone in the world...just that I like it. It is definitely not for everyone.

I like iPhone, Macs and my iPods. So what? They are just computers and software, yes? What works for me may not work for you.

I don't spend any time hand wringing about what the Samsung, Nokia or Moto folks are doing just like I am not too concerned what folks that like BMWs and Mercedes are doing. If I did, the problem would not be the other folks and their likes, it would be me! To each his own.

Maybe you should take a deep breath and relax and not get too worked up over what other folks like. Life is too short.

Best,

Kurt
